Topic: Knee Surgery This Tuesday
Hi All, I am finally having my other knee replaced this Tuesday. On the one hand, I know exactly what to expect. On the other hand, I know to expect a bit of pain. Well, at least there's no prep for this surgery. I thought that, as I lost weight, my knee pain would improve rapidly. Wrong! It's only gotten worse and now I even have calf and hamstring muscle pain because I'm walking all the time on tiptoe with my bad leg. It's time. I'm looking forward to walking farther than 50 feet and riding my bike. So, if you say prayer, please say a few for me on Tuesday. Donna

Hi Ginakay, I don't have RA but my mother does and your symptoms sound very similar to hers. She had it in her hands especially. I would recommend you go to the Dr and have a blood test done to see if you have RA just so you know. I was at my surgeons yesterday. I haven't been able to exercise as much as I like or need because I have arthritis in my low back so bad and the main reason I had this surgery was so I could lose weight and get the pressure off my back. My surgeon gave me a prescription for liquid Vikaden with tylenol. I hate taking medication and really don't take any drugs but realized this is what I'm going to have to do to make this weight loss happen like it should.Since we can't take anti-inflamatory medications anymore this is going to have to be it for me.I wish you success in finding out what it is. Sometimes even certain foods will cause inflamation or agravate arthritis. My chiropractor told me to stay away from tomatoes and all acidic type foods. They cause arthritis to flare up big time. Good luck Sharon A

Topic: RE: Carpal Tunnel Arthritis
I first had trouble with Carpal Tunnel in 89, two weeks into a job at a meat packing plant. They insisted at the time I was high risk for it because at that time I had been driving a semi for 10 yrs. I had surgery and it help a lot, but I continued to have wrist and forearm problems. In 2001 had surgery on left hand, same story. Now I have RA so I have to wonder about the connection there. But until 2000 I never weighed over 170# 5'4" not much fat, I unloaded most of my loads myself. I've never heard of a connection of weight with carpal tunnel either. I've talked to a lot of people with carpal tunnel, some the surgery takes care of all their problems and some not. Good Luck and I hope it all gets better. Nut

Topic: opinions please
I am not asking anyone to diagnose, just give your opinion if you think I might have RA. I started having joint pain about a year ago. Now I have episodes where either wrist is so sore, somewhat swollen and painful to use. I also am so stiff , especially in the mornings or after driving /riding for a ways. It is almost hard to walk at first. I can tell this is worsening. I have tried to lay it off to OA or age but the way the pain in my wrists or thumb or where-ever it is, can come on overnight, then go away totally in a few days just makes me wonder. I know I have a positive ANA for years (they checked it for some other reason years ago). Anyone elses with symptoms like that? I am scheduled for RNY next month. I know I will have to give up the motrin. I've already cut it down to one dose a day.

Hi Lynne: By now you have gone through the RNY and are on the losing side, I am sure. I am scheduled for surgery (RNY) on Tues 9/6/2005 and also have RA. Was taking Methotrexate, and prednisone. I had to be off for two full weeks before surgery and I am in so much pain I had to be put on vicodin for the two weeks. I couldn't survive without it. Tell me how you are taking the meds now. I read where one person got injections of the methotrexate. Wonder if prednisone can be injected also. I would love to hear we get better with the RA after this surgery, but I don't know. What about it? Do you feel better? By the way, how are you doing with the WL? Janice

Well my surgeon said I can continue to take my celebrex up until the day before my surgury. I am also on methotrexate and he wants me to stop that 2 weeks before surgery. He said I can go back on my nsaids a week after surgery. Hope this helps - Sonya

I would really like to know the same answer Cheryl..I am 33..ive had arthritis in both knees pretty bad since i was in my 20's. Doc's said i was too young for a replacement. So i dealt with it. Ive been deaing with it since my teens. Now after loosing 170lbs my knees are worse then they have ever been. I did this surgery to help my immobility ..now im even more limited. Doc's say i am too young for a replacement. I have been on celebrex for a month or so..now my stomach hurts so i stopped. not like it helped much anyways. So again..how old were u when u had the replacements? tanya

I had the surgery on one of my wrists back in 1990. However, I still have the tingling and numbness 15 years later it comes and goes. The pain is better and so is the swelling. If your mom does not want to have the surgery tell her that putting her hands above her head will relieve the tingles she is feeling in her wrist and if she will make a pouch and put dry rice in it. All she has to do is heat the rice up in a microwave and wrap it around her wrist until it cools off. This will help. I do recommend her to have the surgery thou. It is a breeze. Tammy

Topic: RE: What arthtisis meds?
Not sure what I took. My arthritis showed up after I had lost all my weight It had been there all along but when I took a fall it showed its ugly head. They put me on something for the pain and something for arthritis and said take it for ten days and if it does not help discontinue. Well it did no good at all just made me dingy.

Guess it was there all along but did not show up until I fell last Thanksgiving. Been hurting every since then. I have wasted a lot of time going to massage, chirpractor phsical thearapy and dr. needless to say co pays so lot of money and time wasted! I now weigh 150 -155. Help!
