Cheryl, Find another doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Synvisc helps but only for a short time. I was 53 and hardly able to work. I went through the Synvisc and the arthroscopies for 2 years, until I had enough and went to a different doctor because the first one still insisted I was too young at 55. The knees may have to be redone when you are older at 10-15 years out. Tell the doctor that your quality of life is more important than your age and you want the replacement. I told mine I wasn't sure how long I would live but I didn't want to waste what I had in pain!!!!!!! He wouldn't budge so I changed Docs and the new one said he didn't know how I was still working as I had bone on bone, and scheduled me for surgery. He's not knife happy but he knew I was determined. I had ,had it with the rest of the therapies. Remember YOU are paying THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tomanip

Sharon, Be careful please as Vicodan is a hydrocodone and is highly addictive. I don't think you'll have a problem but just wanted you to know. It can cause weird dreams. Please read the insert for side effects and reactions. There is internet info on side effects at: www.RXPO.net/ or www.drugs.com/vicodin.html Tomanip

Topic: RE: Is Gout considered a non -medical co morbitity?
Gout is due to high protein diets. It used to be in the olden days be called "the rich man's disease" since they were the only one's getting the high protein diets, everyone else was eating a lot of vegetables. It's caused by a compound called uric acid. Our high protein diet can make it flare up. Talk to your doc about it and drink lots of water. Some say that cherries or real cherry juice helps, not the ****tail stuff that's only like 10 % juice. Tomanip

Hi Donna and Irish, Total knee replacement is not for sissies. IT HURTS LIKE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had both of my knees replaced (not at the same time) and am glad I did so, but for the first 3 months each it was pure misery. I hated my therapist, but because he didn't give up on me I now walk normally. A friend who had hers done the same day has had nothing but trouble with hers. She refused to move at the begining and didn't do her exercises!!!!!!!! She now has a bad limp and stiff leg. Do you have the ice thing that looks like a cooler with a hose and a pad attached? It holds ice water and works with gravity. You put it on the knee for 20 min at a time especially after therapy and exercising. It's fantastic. Way later(4 months out) I used it with ho****er, or I'd soak .Taking your pain meds 30 min before therapy helps. Just don't try to drive after taking them. Tomanip

Topic: RE: RA and surgery
Rain, I know my response is a little late but do not always check the arthritis board. I have RA and had surgery on 8/23/05. My pre-op treatment was Enbrel injection once a week, methotrexate (5 pills a week) and Celebrex. I stopped the Celebrex a couple of weeks prior to surgery and resumed about a month after-I was hoping I would not resume but my body pain was getting worse. The enbrel I did not inject the week before surgery and resumed the week after-one week without. The methotrexate was the same but have since quit the methotrexate due to liver testing. I did not have a flair up or any RA pain during or after surgery. I still battle with fatigue but that is getting better-do not feel like I need a nap when I get home from work. I thought that eliminating the methotrexate would produce a problem but so far so good. I have labs in a few weeks to see where my liver is at. Hopefully since I have quit cholesterol meds and methotrexate my liver tests will be normal. As time progresses I just feel better all over. I have started walking for exercise-had a difficult time initially due to feet problems but did get a steroid injection and that has helped so much. I guess I have to admit that I do have stiffness and some pain daily but nothing like when I was having flair ups on a weekly basis. Good luck with your research. Lynne

Hi Irish, Things are still going well. I'm walking without a cane like a normal person for the first time in years. No pain, just some stiffness and, of course, I want to scream every time I have physical therapy. Here's my take on knee replacement surgery. It's great. It has changed my ability to function in a wonderful way, BUT it's not for the faint of heart. Sort of like WLS, but not exactly. It takes a similar big commitment to changing your lifestyle. The surgery takes care of the pain. That bone on bone feeling disappears immediately, but the surgery doesn't take care of range of motion. That takes work with physical therapy. And it's not comfortable. Sometimes I want to hit my PT, but I know he's doing good things for me. It was definitely more painful than WLS, but they've improved a lot on pain management since I had my other knee done 6 years ago. All in all, it's really been worthwhile. Think about it seriously. I'm sorry you're so uncomfortable right now. That swelling sounds awful. Here's some prayers going out for you to get some relief. Donna

I am 45 yrs old now and have never been told that I was too young. Only by older women who say I am too young to hurt like I say I do but they say that cause they feel younger folk than them are suppose to not hurt I guess. If knee replacement is going to help with this awful pain then I am all for it. Irish

HI Irish long time now see. I was denied the gastric bypass but BCBS approved the Panniculectomy. Which I paid a little extra to have my upper muscles tightened to help support my body more so the lower back muscles do not have to work as hard. (This nerve block did little to help) But when I had the Tummy Tuck (after what i paid extra it was turned to full tummy tuck) I have NOT had one pain in my back! They removed 11.7lbs from my lower ab that hung (I have photos on the internet of before and after) I was even able to stand in the kitchen last sunday for 5 hours cooking while before I could NOT even load a dishwasher without sitting in my computer charge rolling around the kitchen. This surgery has been a small miricle. None of my other joint I have artheritis in besides my right ankle (which was broke in 5 places so I guess it should hurt) has bothered me since. It also healed my bladder problem I was going to have to have surgery on as well. If you need any information you are more than welcome to call me 205 647 0554 (I have a hard time typing a lot due to having hemroid surgery the second week of october) But I would love to give you information I know you have worked hard to get to where you are at and there maybe be more options for you now. But I have also heard that insurance is going to stop paying for reconstuctive surgery after the first of the year for patients that have had WLS. So you will need to act fast if you have BCBS. Call me if you want. Angel Hugs and Thank You So much for your information! Kim

I have RA. After having wls it got worse. I had to be off of prednisone for 3 months before having wls. It prevents he body from healing and breaks down body tissue. I had to be off the methotrexate for a month before wls also. I was taking the Humira which I could take before and after wls with mo problems. I am off the prednisone cause it made me gain weight. I am taking the dosage of methotrexate equivalent to 7 pills a week. I also take tylenol arthritis and darvocet for pain. The stress on my jonts are a lot better since losing over 100 plus pounds but now I dealing with the pain of Gout and swelling more in my knees. You will not be able to take NSAIDS due to they can cause ulcers. I have heard others say that their RA have gone into remission. Oh how I wish. But I can say that after losing the weight it has allowed me to deal with my RA a lot better than before. I get around better and although my left foot right now is sore swollen and painful I have to rely on help from my cane and cause my right knee is so swollen now as well as the left one and getting around is hard sometimes. I hope and wish you all the best. Irish

Glad things are going ok with you. My right knee stays swollen and I have to have fluid drawn off every month. I am due this friday again. I weighed last friday and had a gain of 8 lbs but the dr said it was probably due to my foot and both knees swollen to the point that my pants are so tight I have to wear joggers and it looks like I have double knees that hit against one another. I hate to walk when I am like this cause it is so tiredsome. I have to use a cane daily. Irish
