Topic: WLS and Iritis - related to Ankylosing Spondylitis
I had my WLS on Feb 22/05 and have had two episodes of iritis. The first was last September and then again a flare up on Good Friday (not so good). Does anyone here have iritis or AS? I have been wondering if the flare ups are occuring more due to the mal absorption of our nutrients. Does anyone supplement with things such as Greens + or glyconutrients? So far the pain and problems have been related to my eyes. I don't take any NSAIDS and very small amounts of tylenol when needed. I do worry about all the drops I am using in my eyes. The pressure went up really high and now I am taking glucoma medicine to control the pressure. The opthamologist is sending me to a Uveitis specialist in Toronto. I hope he has some experience with WLS patients and our special cir****tances.

Topic: Did any of you have to go on Disability?
I have an office job...but just walking in from the parking lot is so painful.....Some of my Friends/co-workers have done some of my jobs that require short walks. I dont think this is fair to them. I have used up my sick time and no matter how painful I have to use my walker to get into work. I am just about to have my WLS....have finished all classes and testing at Kaiser. My knees are bone on bone and will have knee surgery after WLS but its so hard to deal with my loss of mobility......My house is such a mess.....very frustrating. I know things will get better in the future. Cindi

Topic: RE: NSAIDS and Bariatric Surgery?
Hi Ann, I haven't had my surgery yet it should be within the next month, just waiting on a date. When I saw my surgeon for my consult, I specifically asked about my arthritis and what I could take. He said I could continue taking my celebrex, but never anything like motrin, naproxen, aleve or anything else. So I guess I will be ok with the celebrex we will see. I also take darvocet, I am not sure if they will continue letting me take that after or not. Patty

Topic: Anyone use Neurotin?
I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this, but I'll try. I have RA,OA and a number of neuropathy problems in different parts of my body. I take prednisone for the arthritis before and after RNY. The doc just prescribed neurotin for the nerve pain and I'm a little worried about starting it. I have had ulcers and gastritis ever since my RNY, taking meds but just can't seem to get it healed up -- YET. Just was curious about anyone's experience with neurotin. Nut

HI Ann: NSAIDS are pretty much a no-no all over, My doctors give me darvocet to take the place of. I developed arthritis in my left knee and my doctor has given vicodin and my primary care doctor gives me darvocet. Best Wishes Stephanie

Topic: NSAIDS and Bariatric Surgery?
I keep reading in the forums that NSAIDS are on the no-no list post-bariatric surgery. Anybody get a different directive from their doc? I'm on anti-inflammatories for arthritis (pretty much all over), but I don't think that weight loss is going to ease the pain in my hands from arthritis. Comments, please?

Topic: RE: Arthritis as a GB Complication?
I had WLS in 2000. Late last year I complained of unusual back and neck pain. I was sent to a reumatologist and she mentioned lupus as well. After all the tests were said and done, thank God, the diagnosis came back negative for lupus. I do however, have spinal arthritis, scoliosis, cervical ribs, degenerative disc disease and arthritic knees. I tried the pain meds route and found myself gaining weight faster than ever. I am starting physical therapy and chronic pain management next week. Hang in there, find a doctor that you trust, who has experience with wls patients and arthritis. There are gentle exercises including yoga and stretching exercises that can be done. Good luck and let me know! Kathy

Deana, First of all, please understand that you can do everything right, protein, vitamins and minerals, diet, exercise, and still have complications related to the surgery.I've had serious issues with iron levels and religiously take my vits/minerals and follow my dietary regimen set forth by my nutritionist. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in September of last year(ruled out Lupus first) and am now on injections twice a week for it. I was very upset at first, it really sucks to have surgery to be healthier and my course has been just trading one set of health problems for a whole different set. I thought that the surgery brought on the rheumatoid arthritis, more so due to igniting the inflammatory response in my body, but then my endocrinologist pointed out that my body already had a history of doing this to itself. I've had hypothyroidism for years now, caused by my body attacking its own thyroid tissue and destroying it. Rheumatoid arthritis involves the body attacking its own joints, so who knows, this probably would have happened anyway and if I'd been over 300 lbs when it did, I'd probably be in a wheelchair by now and unable to work. My doctors checked a lot of levels of vitamins and minerals before checking for the RA/Lupus stuff. We wanted to make sure that there was no little-known vit/min deficiency causing symptoms first. If you do receive the diagnosis of RA or Lupus, please see a rheumatologist who treats gastric bypass patients, as most surgeons don't allow you to take aspirin or NSAIDS and managing these diseases without them can be very difficult. Hope this helps Rachel

Topic: RE: Gout and wls diet
My father had gout for many years. I have never experienced any problem with it, or osteoarthritis either. However, I am on day 3 of the pre-op diet and using protein supplements. I've been stiff in the knees and hips and was awakened last night with sharp pain in my big toe. I was immediately wondering whether it was gout. I'm still going to do the lap-band surgery, because after I can eat again, I won't need the protein supplements. However, I think that gout could be causing this pain.

Since my surgery I take Vicodin and SOMA and still the pain haunts me all day every day. I used to go to the dr and complain of the pain and he would say well if you would just loose some weight! Well I've lost 145# and it hasn't helped yet. Hope you find relief Brenda
