Nut
I took neurotin for several years with very little results, but I did not have a negative results.
The Dr has put me on LYRICA CV which is a new medication. It seems to help with my neuropothy. I am just not sure about how it would effect it would had on ulcers and gastritis. Might ask your Dr regarding LYRICA CV. it is new and suppose to be better than neurotin.

Topic: RE: Did anyone have Cortizone in knees before WLS?
Cindi
I have had knee problems for about 5 years now and have taken cortizone shots in the knee several times. It does tend to elevate your blood sugar, so if you are on insulin your have to adjust your doseage. The higher blood sugars do not late very long, a week at the most.
I had WLS in Nov 05 and have lost 138 lbs so far. Before WLS I was wheel chair bound for 4 years. After about a month after WLS I was able to get up and walk. I found the more I walked and exercised the worse my knee got. It was just bone on bone. So on May 10th of this year I had my left knee replaced. Even though I still have some pain from the surgery, I am able to walk and exercise so much easier.
Hopefully you will notice a big difference in your knee after WLS and the pounds start coming off.

I am not diabetic, but my mom is and anytime she has to have cortizone or oral predinizone, it messes up her blood sugars very bad. She is normally diet controlled now, not insulin dependant, but with prednisone, her blood sugars roller coaster from 500 to 37 (twice she hit that low and I thought we were going to lose her!)
The Synvisc injections are great, if you are not allergic to eggs or poultry. They are made from rooster combs, no kidding! LOL They also last much longer than the cortizone IMO. The bad part is you have to have a series of 3 shots, each one week apart and it can take a few weeks to kick in where as the coritzone works the same day or the next, for me anyway.
Steroids in any form will leach calcium from your bones so be aware of that fact and I think they also cause healing to take longer. Important for diabetics.
HTH!

Hi Honey!!
Yes, I take Neurontin for restless legs and periphrial neropathy (spelling, sorry) I was deathly afraid to start it as it is origianlly for seizures, but I started it and now the one time I forgot it, I paid dearly and had my legs jumping all night. It used to be so bad that I would boot the little dog off the bed! Another thing that the rheumy has me on is vit. D-3. Something about that and the B-12 I already take has shown to help with Arthritis. They just started my older sis on those vits too.

PS once you start Neurontin, do not stop taking it without tapering. I was off it for 2 nights for testing and had SEVER withdrawl symptoms.
Topic: RE: NSAIDS and Bariatric Surgery?
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. When I had surgery my surgeon used Bextra post op for swelling. But since Bextra has been removed from the market I was left with no med to take. I had a terrible flare of my RA and I had bone spurs and cysts in my hips.....so I HAD to have an NSIAD. I was prescribed Londine XL which is one that is suppose to be the easiest on the stomach. I was also prescribed Nexium to take with it to protect my pouch. I take it as needed and so far I have had no problems.
Each surgeon is different...work with your surgeon, rheumatologist and orthopedic doc to see what is best for you. I can not take celebrex as I am allergic to it.

Topic: RE: Enbrel question
I was on Enbrel pre-op and I stopped the week before surgery and then did not go back on for nine months. The reason is that I had a nine month remission of all symptoms.
The standard is two weeks before surgery and stay off for at least 2-4 weeks post op. To allow for normal healing.
How do you like the 50 mg once a week Enbrel? I heard it burns really bad! I was on the twice a week version.
When I restarted it did not work....so now I am on Humira...and it burns like ACID going into the skin. I am looking for a new rheummy that will hopefully have different med to offer!

yes, i am on disability. I have RA, OA and fibro. Do you have short-term or long term disability? If so check into using them. Also check into FMLA which protects your job for 12 weeks if you have to be away from work. If you have not purchased short or long term disability do so now!!!

Topic: RE: Arthritis as a GB Complication?
You doctor told you correct info. There is a host of issues that can happen after GBS that are a part of the surgery and the malabsorption issues. Please check out this yahoo group called OSSG_gone_wrong.
Many people develop auto-immune triggered problems after GBS. Please check out this group. Its very informative group.
I personally had RA before surgery and chose NOT to have GBS due to the known issues post-op. I had lapband and I have had no problems related to surgery. However I have had many directly related to having auto-immune disease.
