Topic: Exercise and arthrits of both knees
What kinds of exercise for the legs do you do? I have been going to the gym and spend only 15 min on treadmill and 10 on the elipitcal. I know the elipitcal is best for me, but it is so hard for me just starting out.
The stationary bike seems to hurt me knees when I try to bend them.
I tried a weight bearing exercise machine where I push with my feet. My thighs sure was burning after that. I can't remember the weight I used. Is this a good exercise?
I think I need to build up my thighs and calves to support my knees. What do you do?
Thanks for any help,
Lavon
Topic: RE: RNY and Arthritus
John, or anyone who needs to know. I have RA and was taking methatrexate, my doc has since put me on enbril and told me I could wean myself off of the meth. Which I am only too happy to do. In the last month I have not been sick at all even when my family gets sick....new to me. The last year was the worse health wise I have ever been. I was also diagnosed with fibromyalsia (sp) I take flexeril and tramadol for that. Who ever said their doc gave them tylanol because they were still fat...needs to find a new doctor. Well duh yes we are fat that is why we are going through the process of a life changing operation. It's a no win situation to just let it go....your fat so you need to work out but you can't work out because your in pain constantly. Wow enough said.
Topic: RE: Anyone use Neurotin?
Hi Dru, Well I never started taking the neurotin, the primary doc I had moved out of state and the doc I was referred to in the same practice told me I was seeing WAY
too many doctors and on way too many drugs and then put me on two more. He
told me all of these "issues" are chronic and I just need to learn to live with them.
Needless to say I am looking for a new doctor. Interesting, your comment about the injections, I have been getting 3-5 injections in different joints every 2-3 months and have been gaining weight, I'm actually eating less due to the digestive problems I have, so very discouraged about weight gain, but doctors tell me the injections won't cause weight gain. I lost 170# at first but my back and leg and joint pain did not get better I hope yours does. Thanks for your info Nut
Topic: RE: Anyone use Neurotin?
Hi Nut,
I have been taking Neurotin for the last 2 years, now on 1600 mg per day. Was on 2400 mg per day. It does have side effects, like I have a small balance problem, very small. And forgetfulness sometimes, but that may be age too, I am almost 55. But it really does the trick. I am 18 days post op from a LAP RNY here in Houston. I am now taking Neurontin in elixar (liquid) and it tastes awful, but still works. My problem is my feet. They burn and cramp and the 4th & 5th lumbar in my back are pressing against my ciatica nerve and the pain goes to my feet. I had some steroid injections in my spine last year, but i put on 30 extra pounds with that, so no more ever!!! But the neurontin is the drug of choice so far. That new one that one of your responses spoke about, I may speak to my pain management doctor about. I also have restless legs (shake 20 times per hour) and the doctor that I have for that did not prescribe for that, saying that with the weightloss, it should go away. They found out in a sleep study. I hope this information helps.

One dr. wanted to roto-root my spinal column.. nuh huh... not there... they want to do my knees too... I know I hurt less when I weigh less... just found out today I have gained back 40 pounds of the 70 I lost.
Physical exertion wears me out.. hell just getting up and walking exerts me these days. No one seems to understand how much of a downer this is... except those going thru similar~
this forum is so helpful.... because others have known... others seeking help... others doing better... so many reasons to be here... thanks~
Topic: RE: Arthritis Cure
Has anyone heard of Hulda Clark- she says arthritis, both osteo and rheumatoid, are both mainly caused by parasites in the joints. I can see a correlation between that, and when my daughter got sick with rheumatoid arthritis, due to the conditions at the time. Will let y'all know about what happens... we gonna some parasites I hope!

Ready....
All of my docs, GI, Rheumatologist, PCP and WL Surgeon all have said the same thing....No NSAIDS, no celebrex, no aspirin....The danger of ulcers with such a small stomach area is not worth the relieve that celebrex provides....
I take tylenol based drugs tramadol or just Tylenol Arthritis, depending on my pain level...
Depending what kind of Arthritis you have, there are other treatment options, like Enbrel and Humira, and Remicade...these drugs don't impact your stomach, but since they are all immune system modilators, you need to be monitored for liver and kidney function...These drugs give great relief and help prevent further joint damage if you have Rheumatoid Arthritis orits many cousins....
The Web site for the Arthritis Foundation has lots of good information about treatments, nurtition and alternative therapies...Check it out,

Topic: RE: RNY and Arthritus
John,
You didn't say what kind of Arthritis you have.....I have a form of RA and I take Enbrel...Its an injectable drug and it has made a tremendous difference in my condition. I was wheelchair bound and now I don't even use a cane or walker. I also use cyclosporine and methotrexate....They require a lot of monitoring. I get blood work every six weeks, but I am used to it.
I take Ultram or Tramadol for pain only at night now.....
Good luck,
Kelly

Ready,
Celebrex is not a good drug for RNY people or banded people because it can lead to ulcers in the stomach and intestines. My Rheumatologist and my GI doc both said I should not take any NSAIDS or asprin products for this reason.
I do take Ultram because it is tylenol based....Talk to your DR about stomach issues...The Ultram is doing a good job with all my assorted pains...

Topic: RE: Celebrex & Ulcers!
I suffer from knee pain as well, so here's a few suggestions.
The BEST ointment I've found is "BIO-FREEZE"! NOTHING compares to BIO-FREEZE!
I also take naproxen or celebrex.......BUT ALWAYS....ALWAYS I take a Previcid WITH it! Previcid will coat the stomach. Previcid, Nexium and even over-the-counter Prilosec are good for acid reflux and ulcers. My ulcer healed taking Prilosec.
This is ONLY my experience!
I hope this helps you and you heal soon! Good Luck!
