Topic: RE: Is Arthritis A Co-Morbidity?
Yes,  it is---and it's one that should cause you to very carefully consider which form of WLS is right for you. Post-op RNY patients frequently aren't allowed to take NSAIDs, and for me, that's the only thing that helps my arthritis pain. That's one of the reasons I chose the DS (duodenal switch) instead. (There were many others as well.)

Topic: Is Arthritis A Co-Morbidity?
Hi All ! I just found this forum, so bear with me. I am considering WLS. I have neither diabetes or heart disease, and have never been tested for sleep apnea. I do however have chronic bursitis in one hip, two displaced vertabae in my lower back and fibromyalgia that is only controlled with narcotics. Add carpal tunnel in both wrists, osteo arthritis in most of my joints, but the knees especially, and nerve damage in one thigh. I'm 5'5" and weigh 230lbs, so should probably lose 100lbs. Does it sound like I might have a chance getting approved by my insurance? Of course I know every case is different - I'm just trying to prepare. Thanks so much. I love this site, but there hasn't been much action here for awhile. Is everyone on vacation? Leone

Topic: RE: Steroids for RA causing weight gain after RNY???
I, too, have gained a substantial amount of weight because of steroids.  I was diagnosed with RA a year and a half ago.  I finally found a treatment that is tremendously successful, and now I take no more steroids.  I did lots of research on Minocin therapy.  Minocin is a simple antibiotic.  I read the book "The arthritis breakthrough" by Dr. Thomas McPHerson Brown.   It has been nothing less than a miracle.  I am off all other meds entirely, and am looking forward to WLS to help me lose this weight that was gained due to previous treatment. Good Luck,   Deb

Topic: RE: Pre-op saying goodbye to nsaids in 2 weeks!
Hi Everyone! I am new to OH and just today found this board when I was "wondering" around.  I too am glad I found it as well.  I have Ra and like Therese am worried about going off NSAIDS.  But I also know  that WLS is the absolute right thing for me.  So come whay may, my docs and I will just have to figure something out that works.  I have been looking into the holistic side of treating RA so far I have found some really interesting things regarding RA.  But that is another post. LOL.  I am still pre-op and have 2 nut visits to go and then hopefully have RNY in Oct.   Good luck to all on their WLS journey and their battle with RA! Melissa

Topic: RE: NSAIDS and Bariatric Surgery?
Hi Ann, Dr. Garth told me .  I have RA and I am concerned about getting off my NSAIDS because of my hands too.  I am just going to pray and pray hard that something else works.  I am still pre-op and have 2 visits to go.  I will not go without WLS because of RA I have to many reasons to benefit from it.  So let me know if you find something that works for you.  Good luck!!

Topic: RE: Methotrexate questions
Hey Loretta, I have RA and I take Methotrexate.  I take 15mg a week via pill form.  The pill form of Methotrexate is called Trexall which is what I take.  Anyway it does have some horrible possible side effects, it is a chemotherapy drug; but for that is used in massive doses.  Anyway, I have been on it for about 3 years now.  In the begining it made me very ill.  Headaches, GI issues, hair thinning  etc..... the nausea was terrible.  My doctor told me to take it at night so that I could sleep through the worst of it.  She also perscribes Folic Acid to help with the side effects as well.  I am going back to the injections after my RNY surgery in Oct, it does not have the same effect on me and it bypass your stomach that way.  I have never gotten ill on the injection.  It does surpress your immune system so be careful of that too.  And it is a MUST to get labs done, due to those lovely possible side effects. Good luck to you!   Melissa

Wow, what an impressive testimony.  I never had any thought about it being viral.  I will research that further.  So happy for your excellent results. Kim M.

Topic: RE: Arthritis pain worse
Actually RA is a know long term complication for WLS patients.  It is an auto-immune disease.  We are more susceptible to auto-immune diseases due to nutritional deficiencies.  I was close to deciding on the DS instead of RNY but nutritional deficiencies can be even worse after a DS due to the fact that it is much more malabsorptive than the RNY (which is why the weight loss is better and is usually sustained more so than the RNY long term).  Since I have Osteoarthritis already, I decided that I needed to go for the less malabsorptive procedure knowing that I would have to work harder to lose and maintain weight loss.
