Topic: RE: Synvisc
Hi there I just got shots called Duralane, similar to Synvisc and Neovisc but only one shot instead of three.  They stung a bit going in but tolerable pain (high threshold) and my knees hurt that night and the next day but no worse than any really bad day of arthritis.  The second day I woke up and found that I could stand up from bed without pain.  It was strange.  I painted my living room and walked to the mall (about 5 blocks) something that I haven't done in about 6 years.  This morning my knees don't feel like anything.  Nothing... no pain...  I think it is working!  It was expensive $333 per shot, and I guess I will see how long it lasts to determine if it is worth it financially.

Well - I don't have a musical or rhythmic bone in my body, so I have never tried any of the music related workouts. I did just buy a recumbent bike, and even with my arthritic knees, am able to use it on the easiest setting. Somenights I go do it when I can't sleep even. I bought a rowing machine awhile ago, but I find that it's just too hard on my knees right now.. I'm hoping these poor old knees are my ticket to WLS, so wish me luck! Lee

Hi, I just posted over on the over 50 board.  I have bone on bone in one knee and the other is not far behind.  Looking for the same answer.  Must be the hard pavements here in Philly. Jeanne

Topic: RE: Methotrexate questions
Hello, I have psoriatic arthritis. Its like RA, but related to me having psoriasis.  I was at my top dose of MTX which was 5 tablets for a total of 20mg once a week. I hated it. I took folic acid in addition to help my liver. You have to have routine screenings for liver enzymes. The worst thing for me was not being able to be in direct sunlight. I didn't know that and went to a baseball game. The sunburn was 3 times as bad as normal and took weeks to clear up. I nearly passed out on the walk back to my car. It was terrible. MTX is a chemo drug, as mentioned. It stops fast growing cells. That's the problem with psoriasis-your skin regenerates  in 3 days instead of 28; leading to itchy patches of new skin. (super simplistic description!) But since you have an auto immune disease, perhaps this is the rationalization for the treatment. I personally don't like the drug. I hope you have better success.

VSG TO DS Revision on June 8, 2017.

Surgeon: Dr. Philip Schauer at Cleveland Clinic
Current Weight: 280 lbs

Regained to: 312lbs
Lowest after VSG: 249lbs
Highest Weight ever: 330lbs

Topic: RE: Is Arthritis A Co-Morbidity?
Well hi there!!! There were ten people viewing my post, so I guess there are real live people here!! Then to get an actual reply is such a nice treat - thank you. So you think I may get approved - that's very encouraging. And I realize it's a long hard climb just for approval, so I'm getting my hopes up yet. You sound like your WLS was a success. I'm just beginning this whole thought process, and except for the lap band, have no idea of what else is out there. Or even it it would be my decision or the docs as to what to have. My sister had gastric bypass - can't tell you what kind - and now has ulcerative colitis so badly that she need a colostomy. Her docs absolutely insist it had nothing to do with her WLS, but she never had it before, so who knows. Some of the meds I take are narcotics, or controlled - Lyrica, Flexeril, Lunesta, Hydrocortisone, Fentanyl.  Would they be a problem? I guess I just have a zillion questions!  Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I'll keep researching. Take Care, Lee

Topic: You DON'T have to give up NSAIDs!
NSAIDs were something I knew I did NOT want to give up after WLS---but everyone told me that with the RNY, I'd either not be able to take them at all, or would have to take them in VERY limited doses and would have to take other medications along with them to protect my pouch. Scary, for someone who was taking twice the recommended dosage of Aleve each and every day. (With my ortho guy's blessings!) Then I found out about the Duodenal Swtich, which leaves a fully-functional STOMACH rather than a pouch, and NO 'blind pouch' of excess stomach material. (This blind pouch is the biggest reason NSAIDs are bad for RNYers---it can develope ulcers, but can't be 'scoped.) I'm over 3 years post-DS, and still take NSAIDs as needed. Losing weight did help my arthritis pain, but certainly didn't 'cure' it.

Melissa, I chose against having the RNY because I did NOT want to give up NSAIDs---I went with the DS (duodenal switch) instead. I'm over 3 years post-op, and still take NSAIDs almost every day. I love me DS! Check it out---it just might be the best choice for you, too.
