Hi Irene!  I haven't figured out how to email from here yet, so bear with me!  I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain! Isn't it hard to get ANYTHING done when you hurt so bad to move. And it's also hard being our age (I'm 29) and people not understanding. Things will get better. HANG IN THERE! I hope they can provide you with a diagnosis and help eliminate your pain. I am allergic to ibprofen, but I have taken Aleve in the past. I don't want to scare you or anything but, I had similiar smyptoms to you...pain all over in every joint, and it took 2 years for my bloodwork to show the rheumatoid factor...so for 2 years I had seronegative RA (no rheumatoid factor present in the blood) I am a few meds for my RA...Prednisone, Remicade, Celebrex, Methotrexate, Fosamax...this combo seems to help me for the most part, but I would be scared if I had to go without them for my WLS.  I have an appointment to discuss WLS with my Rheumy later in Sept and I am nervous about it. He's kinda old-school, but I think I can sway him :) Hope to hear from you soon,  Michelle

Topic: RE: knees
I need both knees done.  I'm only 6 weeks post op from RNY so I need to lose more weight before I can have my surgery.  I will have cortisone injections until then.  Now the kicker.  My husband works overseas so I am by myself months at a time.  How long were you incapacitated after doing both knees at the same time?  I would want to do them that way and he could arrange some time here in the States.  I could have one done and just try to get along on my own.  My other option would be to move overseas so he would be there.  Cleveland Clinic has a hospital where he works so I would have access to quality medical services.  I'm in pain much of the time and take tramadol, but my pouch isn't too fond of it so I have really cut back on using it.  I will appreciate any information you can give me.  Thank you.

Hi Leone and Rita!  Thank you both very much for your replies! It is nice to hear from people who I have things in common with. It is hard for me to find people who are experiencing things similiar to I am.  I have not had the chance to talk to my Rheumy yet. I made an appointment for the end of September to discuss it with him. Rita, you brought up an interesting point. I am on immunosuppressants too, I didn't even think about the risk of infection and rejection...great point!  Let me ask you...now that you have had your surgery, do you feel ask though your arthritis pain has lessened? Do you have less flares? Right after surgery, did you experience a flare? The thought of having the surgery brings many emotions...fear, excitement, impatience...but it's nice to know that there are so many people out there to talk to!!! Thanks guys for answering my post! I can't wait to hear from you!  Michelle

Michelle, I'm 39 and have had RA since I was 5 yrs old. I just had RNY on May 7th and have lost 65lbs. Having RA has been a struggle my whole life, add extra weight to that and I've had my hands full. Having WLS has been the hardest yet best decision I ever made. Having RA and Fibromyalgia certainly played a huge factor in this decision. Infact, most of my weight gain is directly related to having arthritis, due to meds and lack of mobility. Although I knew that loosing weight would not cure me of the disease, I knew for certain that taking off the extra weight would improve my mobility and take pressure off my joints. I first considered lap band surgery, but due to my immunosuppressant meds, the risk of rejection and possible infection was too high for me. Talk to your rheumatologist, PCP and WL surgeon. Get all your questions answered and then make the best decision for you. If you have any questions for me, feel free to send me an email. Good luck Rita

Topic: RE: Total knee replacement and not over 50 with Rheumatoid arthritis
Hi Marie, I still take my darvocet for my back pain and for some left knee pain.  Since I had my knee replaced in April I haven't had to take much for my knees, just my back.  I can't take any anti inflammatories because of the risk of ulcer to my pouch.  Both surgeries have done wonders for me. Wishing you all the best.

Hi Michelle - I'm Leone, also a newcomer! I'm 52 - got diagnosed with fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis about a year ago. Since then I've taken a nosedive health wise. My knees are very bad and painful - my rhuemy says we can try injections next - right now I put lidocain patches on them at night - it's worthless. After being obese my whole adult life, I got mad and lost half of my weight (150) by diet and exercise. Then I had a botched up, freak show tummy tuck and ended up on antidepressants. I;ve now regained all of the weight, and along with the illnesses, can hardly get out of bed sometimes. People look at me strange - don't know what to say - after all, just last year I was thin, and now I'm fat again! I've got any appt to see a bariatric surgeon. If he thinks we can get it covered with insurance, I'm going for it. But I have no idea what "it" is - there seem to be several surgeries - but I'm hoping he will sugges the one right for me.  I will still have the illnesses after the surgery, and with some of the surgeries, I've read that you can't take all your meds. I can't get along without them, so that will be something to consider. Write when you can. I love to hear other stories, see what we all have in common. Take Care, Leone

Topic: RE: Is Arthritis A Co-Morbidity?
Thank you all for the replies. We are having a heck of a thunder storm, so I shouldn't be online too long.  I can hardly bend my knees - the pain is something else. My next appt I will get injections. I am just beginning my research on WLS - don't know what kind is best for me, or anything. I've got a lot to learn. Gotta go - the storm is getting bad.  Thanks, Leone

Thank, Marie, I just completed my second set of them.  Although I don't get as much relief from them as I have from the cortizone.  My insurance paid all but the initial co-pay of $25.00 so I was fortunate there.  My problem is soon going to be solved.  I wanted to have them replaced but because I still have 120 lbs. to lose and suffer from lymphedmia in one leg and groin my GBS has decided to let me get a panni first, then the knees in about 1 year.   With the panni I will automatically lose 50 lbs. putting me right where I need to be for the knee replacement.   This all took place yesterday so I am still trying to process the new turn of events.  I trust my surgeon and his team so I am going to do it. Thanks again.  I am hoping to have this problem settled soon.  It will nice to be more mobile again.  Good luck to you also. Jeanne

Topic: RE: Exercise and arthrits of both knees
Hi there, I am very limited so don't have much of a selection.  What I've tried:  ------------------  Swimming  - excellent choice, but I can no longer get in/out of the pool with the ladders or steps  Biking  - can't bend my knees enough while sitting on the bike  Walking - I use a walker and because of stability issues, I stoop over the frame of the walker. Walking for any period of time is impossible because of back pain (from the stooping), knee slippage (they give out on their own with no warning), shoulder pain (I have tendonitis in one shoulder from attempting to lift myself up).  Gazelle (Tony Little Glider) - this was great before I got really bad.  You can go as fast and as long as you want - and it strengthens your hips and thighs.  I'm hoping to be able to get back to doing this in the next couple of months. What I am doing now:  --------------------------  Isometric exercises  - while laying in bed, legs straight out, I try and push my knees down into the mattress.  - I try and do leg lifts from the hip, with the leg straight.  Standing exercises  - stand on one leg for a count of 10, then the other  - with my knee pointing to the floor, bend at the knee with your foot going back. Try and do 10 each leg  - stand with both knees locked, loosen one so that it is slightly bent, pause, then try and lock the knee again. 10 each leg  Pedal Machine  - a mechanism that has the foot harness, like on a bike, with a simple contraption that lets you pedal "maddly". I sit in a chair and started at 3 minutes and am trying to get up to and stay at 30 minutes. Ice packs after are heaven.  Arm Weights  - small 3-lb weights. I have to be careful of the tendonitis but can do the normal bicep and tricep workout.  Sit-ups/Crunches - I try and do 50, 2 times a day.  I'm not too good now because my knee joints slip out of position while getting up.  Cheers,  Marie
