UPDATE--
I decided to put the knee arthroscopy off last summer, after the knee improved with PT. Unfortunately, I have gone on to injure the knee 5-6 times since October. Thankfully, I was able to lose about 21 pounds prior to surgery and that did make some difference. I was sleeved 12/31/13, so I've lost an additional 20 pounds (40 total). My ortho did another MRI about 3 weeks ago and it looked worse--complex meniscus tear radiating in all directions.
I bit the bullet and had knee arthroscopy 5 days ago. The ortho told my DH that it was worse than he thought it would be. There was some arthritis which he smoothed off, trimmed the meniscus up, and did some microfractures to promote the bone to make a patch where the arthritis is. I'm in non-weight-bearing mode for 2 weeks, which is a PITA, but the knee pain hasn't been too bad. I'm hoping this will hold off the total knee replacement for a few years. I do NOT have time for that! DH had a knee arthroscopy about 15 years ago and it fixed him right up! I'm hoping I'll have the same result.
I do think that losing 40+ pounds has helped with the knee pain. Well, that and a few cortisone shots along the way. I'm sure that at some point a TKA will be on the horizon, but not today.
I'm unclear. You mention that he's tried "all the home remedies and diets" but there is no mention of actual medication. Has he seen a rheumatologist? If not, he probably should. There are several medications which can help gout.
I hope that's turned out well for you.
I just want to let you know about some netiquette; using all caps is like yelling - so it's not something we tend to do unless we ARE yelling!
I realize you posted this a few months ago, but are you an RNY patient? Or? Cuz the Naproxen and Aleve are off limits for RNY'ers. Do you get cortisone shots in your knees? I get them every 4 months and they are a total game changer!
I'm not familiar with Tramadol tho I have heard it mentioned - it's not an NSAID? Is it narcotic? I have two arthritic knees and would love to find something in addition to my 3x year cortisone injections. Thanks!
This site used to have insurance companies worked with and now I can't find it. Is it gone now?

Good grief! Being able to respond required a bunch of work! I am not a bariatric surgery candidate, patient, doctor or anything else. I'm underweight...always have been.
Yes - taking methotrexate and prednisone. Let me say that my weight has not fluctuated in my life. I don't diet and I'm neither active nor lazy. Methotrexate - taking 10 pills weekly. I'm supposed to take 1 prednisone daily but, I actually cut the tab into quarters and take 1/4 of a pill. Its the prednisone which will pack on the lbs in no time flat! It does this by giving you an insatiable appetite. You can be painfully full and yet, crave more food. I gained 11 lbs in a few weeks on the stuff! The reason I'm taking 1/4th the amount is because it gives me insomnia. Prednisone doesn't make me jittery but, it causes the mind to race and sleeping is impossible. I'm talking - I can be up for 3 days straight by taking 1 prednisone a day. No thanks. I need to function.
If you continue taking in more calories than you burn, you will gain more. I don't know if you're going to do that or not, though. That's up to you.
