Topic: RE: arthritis meds
Hi. I take Diclofenac and Darvon for my Arthritis pain. They take the edge off. I definately can feel the difference without them. My surgeon said it was okay for me to take Diclofenac which is an anti-inflammatory.
Good luck to you.

Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia Anyone?
I won't go into all the details of what i was feelign but to summarize it
I was and I am still experiencing
Chronic Fatigue
Swollen Joints
Sensitivity to light
Skins pain (hurts to be touched)
Confusion or brain fog
Nerve Pain
Now what the docotr explained is that it is not one particular test that is done liek with diabetes. But a series of tests that rule out other conditions. For example I had an EMG done which came back to show it is not carpel tunnel. I also had sugar test done. Let's say dumping was the elast of my concern I thought I would die. Anyway I hope this helped.

Topic: RE: knee replacement prior to age 60?
So here is an update. I have been to see another orthopedic surgeon, this one in Vancouver (a 2 hour ferry ride from my city) and he is willing to replace both my knees at the ripe old age of 51!
Now I just have about a month to get ready for the first knee and three months for the next one... so any advice anyone has to offer would be welcome!
How exciting and terrifying at the same time

Topic: RE: knee replacement prior to age 60?
Hi..I am 48 was approx 315lbs..& have osteoarthritis in both knees. Had surgery last yr on my right one with removal of portions of my menicus (tear on lateral, flap on medial) & shaved my arthritis. I can't walk/stand much & use a cane to eleviate the wt on my one knee. It is almost bone on bone & my orthopedic surgeon said they do not like to do surgery on people >250lbs because they have found we usually do not have the upper body strength needed to lift ourselves etc & because we don't do the exercise needed to keep the knee limber. Once it goes stiff , there is nothing they can do & people will then not be able to do the exercise needed to lose wt..thus they see a pattern of severely obese people growing even larger. He often refuses to do a replacement on severely obese..just helps them with their pain. He said he would do the surgery on me because I am a "good patient" & even suggested I look into getting the lapband. He thinks I am a great candidate for the new Oxford knee and if I can lose a considerable amount of wt, I will most likely be able to walk & possibly even run again. He said it would be good for 15-20yrs. My insurance requires a 6mth dr supervised diet to get the lapband..so we are praying my knee holds out. He has said it is best to hold out as long as possible re: wt but never mentioned my age. I have lost approx 37lbs..in 4 1/2 mths & notice I have much less pain so I am hopeful the surgeries will be a success.
Topic: RE: osteoarthritis and exercise
The way my doctor put it is I can do any excercise I want as long as my feet don't touch the ground or push/pull any weights....in other words GET IN THE WATER!!! LOL I agree water aerobics is wonderful...I haven't tried one specifically for arthritis because it's usually during the day when I work. I'm even joining the Y after surgery instead of keeping my membership to the city rec because I'll be able to do deep water classes more often.
Good luck and just keep swimming!

Topic: OH Events contest: where do YOU want us to come?
The 2007 event year is quickly coming to its end. We've had a lot of fun, met hundreds of people, made new friends, strengthened each other, and empowered ourselves to continue on our journeys.
With the close of the 2007-year, our eyes turn to the future, to 2008. Where will we go?
Our team has analyzed locations, researched demographics, met with support groups, consulted with area professionals for hours.. and HOURS.. and hours! We do this because YOU are worth it. It is our goal to reach out to as many people as possible. But, we can't decide where to kick off the 2008 year! We've arm wrestled, had ping pong tournaments, basketball games and other battles of wills.
So... we need your help to make this decision! We're having a contest. Where do YOU want us to come to? Let us know!
For the month of November, we will leave this post up. Reply and shout out to us where you want us to come to. If you have ever wished for OH to come to your area, now's the time to speak up! Get your friends, surgeon and support group involved!
Simple reply to this post and let us know the area you want us to come to. At the end of November, we will count up all of the votes and we will make the announcement in December.
Rules of the game:
-Since this is a member's contest, you must be a member to vote
-Each member can only vote once for the same area
-Members CAN vote for multiple locations
-One post, one vote. If you want to vote for another location, make a separate reply.
-All votes have to be a reply to this one of the 'contest' posts
-Due to logistics, we may not be able to come to the exact city requested, but we will come to that 'area' as close as possible.
So now is the time to let your voice be heard! Where do YOU want us to come to?
Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia
I forgot to mention that I also have cluster headaches - and a lot of anti-seizure meds are supposed to help relieve the pain of fibro and cluster headaches - so I think I tried almost all of them. Some of the anti-seizure meds (like Lyrica & Neurontin) didn't make a difference in my pain levels. Others (like Topamax, Topiril and Depakote) made my head feel funny - like there was cotton in it, or they caused me to be forgetful.
My doctor's also tried me on Cymbalta - which is an SSNRI anti-depressant that is supposed to relieve pain associated with depression. That didn't work for me either. I just felt more depressed - and had to stop that.
I was taking Ultram as often as my prescription required (I don't remember how many hours apart I could take the meds - but I could feel my pain return before the next pill was due).
After I finished my physical therapy and got into a regular exercise routine - I didn't need Ultram during the day. If I had any daytime pain, I was able to manage it with OTC Tylenol. I only needed a stronger pain med before going to bed at night.
As for Flexeril - I made a mistake in the name. It's not an NSAID - so please ignore what I wrote about it in my last post. Flexeril is a great muscle relaxer! I don't remember why my doctors switched me from Flexeril to Zanaflex - but they're both the same type of medication - and they both have generic equivalents that are inexpensive. If the Flexeril works for you - then I'd say keep taking it!
The one thing that I really would like to emphasize - exercise has been the biggest pain reliever of all for me. If you are able to start exercising - start off easy and gentle - and very slowly build up. I was fortunate that my husband's insurance paid for physical therapy. The PT was able to tell me how to exercise - and when to increase.
