Topic: RE: arthritis meds
I am 4 weeks out of RNY.

For years, I had arthritis both ankles. The right one was fractured 30 yrs ago, but both are bad due to my old weight.

I expect some easing, but I am sure that old damage won't go.

My big problem now is that my surgeon has stopped my Cox-2. I was on Prexige, similar to Celebrex. Both have been banned in some places. With Prexige, i was dancing.

Now I can only use paracetamol. It's no good. I tried Tramadol (like codeine) but not much good either. I am in pain all the time.

At 4 weeks, is it safe to take Omeprazol (help the pouch) and then Celebrex or Prexige? I have doubts.

Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia Anyone?
I know this is an old post so thanks for posting a response.  I am still battling with issues and have no clue what is wrong with me.  I am going for more tests this weekend and next week.  I think I am just going to let it go this is my life as I know it and the doctors really don't know what is wrong.  I am tired of spending my hard earned money for nothing.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia Anyone?
I have fibromyalgia and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.  I got the JRA dx when I was 13, then the fibro dx when I was 37.  I was in the middle of a horrible LONG flare (ended up having to quit working and am now on disability), so when the rheumatologist added fibro onto the stack of issues, I was like "WHAT ELSE?!!!" I haven't had WLS yet, so I don't know how to deal with it post-op.  At first my rheumatologist put me on Neurontin for the fibro pain, but I had to quit taking it--it did nothing for the pain and just put me to sleep, which I could not have happen when I had to be the sole driver for my DH (seizures) and kids.  So I went off that and just stayed on methotrexate shots for the JRA and prednisone pills when the flare was too hard to deal with and lots of resting.

Topic: RE: knee replacement prior to age 60?
Hi, I had bi-lateral total knee replacement 4 years ago.  My surgeon put me off for years and tried other surgeries, but nothing worked.  Both knees were bone on bone and had been for years.  It wasn't fun to do both at one time, but I literally didn't have a good leg to stand on.  And, I figured if I had one done, I'd chicken out and never go back for the other.  I'm very glad I had it done and would do it again.  In fact, I'll probably have to do it again in another 10 years or so.  It got me out of the wheelchair and I'm glad I didn't wait any longer. I've been taking diclofenac also.  My surgeon told me that I couldn't take it after RNY surgery because it might cause ulcers.  If I have to choose between arthritis meds and RNY, I'll have to stay fat.

Hang in there.  At least now you will weigh less so your joints will have less stress on them.  That is a good thing.  I'm in the same boat with you.  Hopefully you do not need neck surgery. celebrex is what my doctor will put me on ater my RNY.

Topic: RE: Arthroscopy

For me the answer was yes the pain was helped by having the arthroscopic knee surgery.  I had my knee repaired after I tore the meniscus in two places and also had severe chondromalacia, which the surgeon cleaned up and smoothed out well.  He somehow took photos during the procedure and gave me copies of before and after.  For me, jogging is out but I can walk. As soon as I get some of this weight off I can walk really fast.  I still have to be careful on stairs because I don't think either of my knees are strong enough to carry me at this weight.  Do your physical therapy religiously, even at home.  The pain after surgery was horrible so I did take the pain meds even though I was afraid to.  I was back on my feet at work after 5 days, though.     I have not had knee replacement, only repair, but I know three people who have had knee replacement and they all say it made a huge difference in their ability to be mobile and pain free.
