Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
My ortho doctor said I can have my knee replacements now that I lost over 100Ibs. I'm going to have my left knee replacement soon. I agree losing weight took pressure off the joints but the OA is still there.

I have OA in all my joints. I have lost 142 pounds since 1/1/2008. My right knee is killing me right now (weather?). I think losing weight has relieved a lot of pressure off the joints but OA does not go away. At least I am ready for joint replacements now!

DDD here too. I was on skelaxin for years. Now I am on another muscle relaxer, tramadol (useless), gabapentin ... and I am still in constant misery. My DDD is mainly in the C5-C7 region so it radiates into shoulders and skull. No fun. I also have OA and fibro.

Topic: RE: Anyone take Mobic ?
I was put back on Mobic 6 months after WLS. I was taking Celebrex because it was supposedly better on my stomach but, the results were not as good on my joints. I have not had any problems with the Mobic but I did not have RNY and I don't know if our issues with medications are the same.

Topic: RE: should my pain be getting worse?
I have also noticed thay legs hurt so much worse since my surgery. I am 3 months out RNY. My doctor is actually sending me to a rheumatoidologist. I have arthristis in my legs but he thinks it is something else. I am stiff and my legs ache constantly from knees down. If i walk to much they feel like they will collapse.

Do ask about the replacement synovial fluid shots---they're sold under three different brand-names, one of which is Synvisc. (That's not the one I had, but I can't remember the other names. Mine was a series of five shots, a week apart.)

I don't take any sort of drink or pill for joint support, but I DID research the glucosimine chondrotin question, and learned that the pills are VERY poorly absorbed by anyone. (I'm guessing they'd be even less well absorbed by a WLS patient.) The way to go is with the liquid form, but you pretty much have to order it on line.

I will say that my brother gave his dog with the bad hip the g/c pills and the dog showed remarkable improvement! (*grin*)

Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
I'm so glad I looked for this topic...I'm also 38 with osteoarthritis, bone on bone both knees, with the right worse than the other.  Just saw my Orthopedic surgeon and same response and many of you have recieved, I'm too young for TKR...I get that, so exercise, ice, rest and possible cortisone shots are in the future...the weight loss has helped some, well it's helped a great deal for my left knee, but the right just wants to be different...lol

My question is:  What drink/pill does anyone recommend to take for joint support..I want to try and prolong this surgery with everything first.  I do have trouble swollowing those horse pills of Glucosimine/Chondriten...so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Topic: RE: rny problem with gout?
Please, research the DS as well. One big reason I chose the DS over the RNY was because I would ALWAYS need to be able to take NSAIDs, and with the DS I can.

I don't have gout, just extensive osteoarthritis.

Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
I have extensive osteoarthritis, beginning at age 20. At 45, the osteo doc told me my only hope was two complete knee replacements, but that I was just plain too heavy. A couple of months later, I had my DS. That was over five years ago, and I still haven't had the knee replacements because I am in so much less pain after losing weight! I do still take NSAIDs daily, however. I chose the DS so I COULD, because I knew losing weight wasn't going to help the pain in my hands, arms, etc.

Have you tried the replacement synovial fluid shots? They really helped me out while I was losing weight. (I haven't had any in about three years now.)

Medicare won't pay for the VSG, but it WILL pay for the DS. Change surgeons and get the DS. I had the DS five years ago, and I take Aleve each and every day.
