Topic: RE: Question about using Voltaren Gel with lap band
I am still awaiting my surgery date for RNY, but am using the Voltaren gel.  I have had 5 knee surgeries and was about to go nuts without my celebrex, but my PCP and ortho doc both said to use it.  I have OA and FMS and a tenative diagnosis of RA and am only 38 so i understand the worry.  The oral NSAIDS are so hard on the stomach lining and that is why we can't use them post op.  The gel has helped although my kids and dogs avoid me after the fact..(it doesn't smell very good) Hope this helps...

Topic: RE: Torn Meniscus?
I had the torn meniscus in my left knee. Had it taken out on March 18, 2009. I can say it is doing quite well. I did therapy after a week or so after. The surgery has help it alot. I still get pain time to time. But not like it use to be. I do get more pain in the right knee but the osteoarthritis is worst in the right knee. I get alot of crack, snap, pop going on in there. I am waiting for approval for the synvisc series of shots. Wonder if they do only one or both at one time. I know you have to go in for 3 weeks so one every week for 3 weeks. I done the cortisone shots did not work. I have done now 4 months out of my 6 months. I am getting closer :)

Topic: RE: Exercise for knees?
I also havve osteoarthritis in both knees. I also had arthoscopic knee surgery on my left knee to remove a menicous tear. I been going to physical therapy and they gave me exercises to do at home. They also put me on the recumbent bike. I told them I could never do a regular exercise bike because of the pain in my knees. I was suprised by the recumbent bike on how it did not bother my knees. My hubby bought me one for Easter and it is my daily exercise now. I start at 10, 30, 45 and now am at 60 minutes a day. I do have to take my feet off for a minute about every 20 minutes because my feet would go numb from the diabetic neuropathy. I do have plantar faciitis and heel spurs. Standing to long and walking to much bothers them. So the recumbent bike has really been my tool of exercise. We also have a wii fit but haven't used in such a long time I need to get my knees and feet to stop hurting first. I have a mri schedule for thursday for my right heel. Therapy isn't helping anymore and had one shot as well.

Topic: RE: Shingles????
Having a bout of shingles as we speak.  I was diagnosed about a week ago, have had them around the waist and back.   I already have some other "pain" issues so it's been tough but thankfully the doctor put me on valtrax, neurontin, and prescribed some cream.   I do seem to be healing now.

Hi,I can not comment on the medical part. However,as far as not being able to exercise and still losing the weight, that's a big yes. I use a walker so I never walked far, just had to tell myself all movement is good movement, even going to the kitchen. My nutritionist gave us a range of amounts to eat the lower part being for the low to no exercising,to the more active.
I always ate on the lower part of the scale, but I ate well.I was advised under eating would not make me lose weight, but would make my body hold on to the fat.
So,the short answer is yes you can. I am blessed that I live in Phoenix because I could use the pool, and I do not swim, but I could do bicycles and jumping jacks arm circles, and such,I am weightless in the pool and took my pain pill first, which once again,I am NOT advising you to do.I also was never in the pool alone.
Much luck to you!

Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
I had surgery on my left knee in 2005 and on the right in 2006. I had RNY last July in hopes of keeping my knees and less pain--no such luck. I've lost 3 lbs in the past 3 months and know I need exercise, but doing any type of exercise that uses my knees is the pits. I took Pilates and had to drop out after I realized I was taking vicodin everyday. Usually I'll take it when I want to cry and then it just makes the pain tolerable. I think I am much more active so maybe like others, that's what is making the pain worse.

We have season passes to the zoos and Sea World, but I just realized I'd have to go in a wheelchair. Did that once and it was awful. I'm finding all the things I wanted to do after my RNY, that I'm not doing because of my knees.

Hello there, I have had shingles a lot, I get them when I am really stressed out, or my immune system get low.. I have COPD and when I have to go on anti-biotic and prednisone I usually get shingles.   I take famciclovir  when I have a break out.  Mine are on my back side below my waist. They can be really painful.. also following the shingles break out I will get thrush in my mouth. It is usually a visious (sp) cycle... have not had an out break  for some time (thank God) hope yours are few and far between,  the pain can be bad and like you said uncomfortable....   Pat

Topic: RE: Severe OA, Spinal Stenosis and sciatica in lower back
Thank you Athena....  I have been in su*****redible pain for the past 3 days, that I'm ready for the shot to happen RIGHT NOW.  But I have to make arrangements for it and I am not sure how long that takes.  Besides, the surgeon says to wait until after my 6 week appointment, which will not be until next Wednesday.  I appreciate your info, and will remember to tell them that I might pass out, which is a reality.... because I hate needles and am especially afraid of one in the back....
