I had my first synvisc injection today in both knees. I have go again next week and the following week for both knees. I had arthroscopic knee surgery to remove a mencious tear in March. Before that had cortisone shot in right knee. did not make a difference. Been doing phsyical therapy for awhle now. I hope the injections will help my knees. They say I am to young for knee replacements and they are not bad enough for the insurance company to pay for it go figure. But did have trouble getting the synvisc injections covered by insurance. It was denied 2 times I was told that when I came in. The assistant said that was unusual. So she called the insurance and got it approved. Boy that was painful.

Hi Mysty
I am in the same boat you are.  I went to the orothopedic and he said I have to lose at least 50 lbs before he will touch my knees.  I too need bilateral knee replacements.  I have now gone to the surgeon to have the Vertical Sleeve surgery.  They are doing so many test on me it is not even funny.  I have to have a stress test, endoscopy and a colonoscopy before the surgeon will do my VSG.  I recently loss my job too.  However, I still have ins. with my husband. Which I am very grateful.
It is hard.  I have tried several diets and I lose the weight and then I gain it back and more.  I am afraid of the surgery but I have no choice unless I want to end up in a wheelchair.  I am 58 yrs old and I would like to think I have a few more years on me.  My knees kill me.  I go shopping and have to sit down several times.  If I go to the grocery store I have started riding on the store scooters it hurts so much.  I only know that the Good Lord will not put anymore than we can bare.   I am trying to have a positive attitude.  The part I worry about the most is in my mind.  I don't drink and I don't smoke eating was the one pleasure that I had.  I have to realize that for 58 years I never worried about what I ate and enjoyed many nice dinners and food.  Now I am paying for it.  I wish you the best but with the help of the Lord we both will come through this part of our life's journey.

I was recently diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in my knees. The doctor told me that I need a total knee replacement in both knees but won't do the operation due to my weight. (419 lb.) I am about to lose my job as well and now won't be able to work at anything else.  Can anyone give me any positive input on what to do?

Topic: RE: New here..Fibro and RA
I have OA, fibro and some kind of connective tissue disorder.  i am miserable without my NSAIDS, but getting all this weight off has to help.  I have had several ortho surgeries already( knee replacement at 30) and now my hips are deteriorating.  Ya'll have no idea how glad I am to hear soembody say they felt better.  At this point, even a chance at having a tolerable day makes this worth it.  If anyone has any words of wisdom...protein..exercise...I am all ears.

Topic: RE: Are all anti-inflammatories NSAIDS and giving up ibuprofen
I have osteoarthritis in my lower back (sacroiliac joint) & knees, and I take ibuprofen and/or naproxen on a regular basis.  I'm hoping that once the excess weight is off, the degree of pain will be less, however I know there is a possibility that the pain will continue.

With that in mind, one of the big factors in my decision to have the DS instead of the RNY is because I want to be able to take NSAIDs if I need to.

I'm also in CO, but I'm planning to have the DS surgery in Nebraska with Dr. Gary Anthone.  If you haven't already, I invite you to do some research on the DS forum here as well as dsfacts.com and duodenalswitch.com.

Best of luck in your decision!

Topic: RE: major weight loss...no exercise
I can't walk very far but I joined our local hospital healthplex gym to have access to the warm water therapy pool and other indoor pool.  I take pain medication first.  They have an exercise class for bariatric patients.  I had my RNY 11/13/08 and have lost 77 lbs. about 8 lbs. a month.  The warm water pool has a thing to lower patients into the water.  Perhaps you could find a gym with a pool.
IF not there are exercises you can do while sitting - leg lifts, arm circles, etc.  Good luck.

Hello everyone.  I have osteoarthritis in my knees.  I'm in the pre-op process and was wondering about NSAIDS.  Are all anti-inflammatories NSAIDS?  If you are on a scrip of ibuprofen (I take Tramadol in addition) is there something else comparable to take after surgery and NSAIDS are a no no?  Thanks!

Hi,
How has it been since surgery.  I am going through the process right now.  I have a couple of tests left.  I too have RA and am worried about taking my meds.  But the Rheumy Dr. said I can take injection form of meds if it comes down to it.  Has it helped you, the surgery , I can't wait until I can get moving without this weight and without pain.

I would love to here from you.
