Topic: 1 week after surgery and RA pain
Hi everyone...I had RNY on 5/15/09 and I have been off my RA meds (because of surgery) since May 1st and I am really in a lot of pain. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments? Any at home stuff that I can do to relieve some of the RA pain? I also have Fibro which is not helping either..90% of my pain since surgery has been RA pain instead of surgery pain. I have some "after surgery" pain but it is SO managable compared to the RA pain...Thanks so much for listening...Amy
Topic: Exercise for the Mobility Impaired- my knees xposted to exercise forum
This is the first time I've posted on this forum and I'm sure this question has been asked, but OH's search feature just sucks.
I have osteoarthritis in both knees and am nursing a cartilage tear in my right one. I need to incorporate some exercise in to my pre-op plan and am wondering if anyone knew of some resources (DVDs, etc.) or exercises for those with my sort of issues. I'm aware of working out in the pool and have in the past, but my access to anything other than my apt. complex pool is hindered by my finances. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
A few years ago my left knee was absolutely killing me. off to the ortho doc. had an MRI- cartilage had torn and was pinching- he said SCOPE- he is a very busy doc and preop was over a month away. during that time whatever little piece was there- got chewed up on its own and floated away! Pain now bearable. Canceled the appts.
since then i've been taking Osteo-Bi-Fl----x. those pills ARE BIG! can swallow them NOW no prob- but after surgery- I DON"T THINK SO....
I feel so much better when i take it regularly - has anyone tried Joint-Ju----e or one of the other liquid Glucosamine- chondrotin supplements. I think i will need to stay on somehting.
My prescription will be a NO NO after surgery.

Topic: Safe anti-inflammatories???
HEY! I just found this forum. How cool! I love OH - but haven't been here in a long time ... see what I missed by not looking now and then?
I'm 5 yrs post-op RNY, lost 120 lbs, & maintaining nicely at 140 lbs. Life is fabulous, and I've taken up the sport of endurance (horseback) riding, where every month I ride up to 250 miles at 50 to 100 miles per day, and this summer, I plan to ride the Tevis - 100 miles in 24 hours on my trusty mule.
The problem is my arthritic knees, ankles, hips and hands for which, as you all know, NSAIDS are a no-no. My surgeon's office has said I can use Tylenol w/Codeine or Ultram, or Vicodin for pain, but nobody seems to know about the use of "natural" plant derivitaves such as Yucca as an anti-inflammatory. Anybody know anything about this???
Thanks!
Jill

Topic: RE: Degenerative Arthritis in the knees
I understand you pain completely. I have the same thing and just had my 4th knee surgery two weeks ago. I was unable to exercise due to the pain let alone walk through a store or just go for a walk. I don't know what kind of job you have but I was fortunate enough I found a job where I can set most of the day. It has it good points and bad points of course. For every pound that is lost it reduces the stress on the hip and knee joints by 4 pounds.
As I see it the worst case scenario for you would be to be forced to apply for medicare and or medicade and they both cover wls if deemed medically neccesary (each state has it owns regulations).

Topic: RE: Severe OA, Spinal Stenosis and sciatica in lower back
![](http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k134/Ruth_Casto/Jeannie2.gif)
I wa**** by a drunk driver and my back was broken in five places and during the surgery they discovered that my back has spondolysis; plus, I have had rheumatoid since I was a child. After wls, I had to go off all the meds and cannot take the steroids unless I am having a huge flare from either the arthritis or the asthma so I take lorecet. It doesn't get rid of the inflammation but it makes the pain a little easier to bear. Of course the weight loss has helped immensley but the pain is still there and sometimes the sciatica just kills me. The lorecet helps there too. Hope this helps.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and asthma and when I take large doses of steroids, I always get shingles. The last time was on my face. I thought I was going to die. Fortunately, the treatment is effective and quick. Are you taking pain meds?

Topic: RE: Question about using Voltaren Gel with lap band
Hello there. When I was given Voltaren gel by my Rheumatologist, he said only 10% of the medicine is absorbed. Hopefully that helps.
