When I tore my medial miniscus in my left knee  I could not walk at all. Get the MRI.

Open MRI"s are not bad at all.

Dear Robbi,

All my doctors (at last count I think I was up to 5 LOL) seem to be in agreement that gastric bypass is the best choice for me.  In fact, they all wrote letters to my insurance company stating so.  Of course I have other health conditions besides the PA (like Diabetes and possibly Lupus).

Topic: RE: 1 week after surgery and RA pain
Hi, I also hope you find the relief you need. I'm just trying to find out about RNY surgery. I lost about 80lbs 2yr ago (fluke) they say it was my thyroid gland, but afterwards even w/o levothroyxin my level was fine. I have gained back half the weight and every joint can feel it. I am on RA meds, celebrex and pain meds for degenerative disc disease. Do you have to go off all your meds before having RNY and how long afterwards. Hope I'm in the right topic to ask these questions. I came here because of the RA.

Sandi:
This is somethign else I just thought of you might want to know.  I originally did want the RNY or Gastric Bypass.  But two surgeons did not want to perform it on me because of the medicines I take for the psoriatic arthritis.  One of those two surgeons finally even said he wouldnt do any surgery on me at all.  Then my rheumatologist  referred me to a third surgeon.  This surgeon said he would rather not do the RNY on me,  but instead suggested the Gastric Sleeve.    This surgeon also conferred with my rheumatologist before finalizing plans for surgery.  So then I put my faith in his judgment and went with the Gastric Sleeve.

Hi Robbi,

I was on methotrexate for nearly 3 years when my liver enzymes started going up.  I was taken off methotrexate just before my gall bladder surgery and it was never resumed.  A liver biopsy confirmed liver damage (as well as fatty liver) and it is not recommended that I start methotrexate again.

For now I am only taking prednisone every morning and that seems to keep my inflammation down.

I did  have a slight flare- but an early Remicade treatment reversed that quickly.

And you are right the PA can hurt just about anywhere.  When it is at its worst it attacks my hands and knees though.

I guess you have to weight the good and the bad and decided what is right for you.

Have you been able to take methotrexate?  My rheumy compliments the Remicade with Methotrexate.

I know everyone is different and what is right for one isnt for another.  Let me know how you do and what you decide to do.

Have you tried doing more exercise? I do water aerobics and am losing inches and my knees feel much better,  I also have a small trampoline I jump on that strengthens my core muscles.I also do not drink cokes or sugary drinks, I drink greentea that has vitamins in it, I get the packets and put it in my water while I work. It gives me a lift and the greentea has helped the arthritis in my hands and knees and aches from fibromyalgia. Good luck Miss Jean

I too have PA.  I have pustular psoriasis on my hands, feet and inside my ears.  The PA affects my back, hands and feet mostly, but can also hurt in other places.  I was on Enbrel for about a year with little effect.  Then I went on Remicade for almost a year then had a few severe allergic reactions and they took me off Remicade.  Right now I am only taking Prednisone and seem to be under control.

My question is...did surgery send you into a flare?  I had open gallbladder surgery in Feb and it sent me into a flare that lasted through May.  I am a bit scared the RNY will have the same effect.

Thanks

Sandi

I have PA psoriatic arthritis and have been on treatment of Remicade/Methotrexate since around 2002.  I recently had Gastric Sleeve.  The only effect the surgical procedure had was the arthritis rearing its ugly head, so they scheduled my treatment a couple of weeks sooner that originally scheduled.  I had it at 6 weeks as opposed to 8 weeks.

My psoriasis has never returned since starting the remicade treatment.

I also have psoriatic arthritis- diagnised in 2001.  I am on Remicade IV infusions every 8 weeks, complimented with Methotrexate and folic acid.  My arthritis is virtually non existent with the Remicade/MTX treatment.  But returns after being off of treatment past around 3 months.  My psoriasis is also non existent.

I would be glad to answer any questions.
