Topic: RE: knee replacement prior to age 60?

I am 52 and planning on having knee replacement this year after losing 50 lbs and on my way to accomplish this goal. I too have met 2 surgeons who also said lose the weight. My first surgeon was right on the money giving me an estimated time of wear. I am going with this surgeon because he is right loosing weight and keeping it off the new knees will last longer.  It has been a fighting battle to lose the weight but I need too for my quality of life and my new knees. I am doing the shake diet under medical supervision and increase activity.  I do outside work for a living and having a pain free drudging thru the snow will feel wonderful.

Topic: RE: Is Gout considered a non -medical co morbitity?
I'm sympathetic to all who have experienced gout after surgey. I have had it 3 times within 2 months and it's painful. Before surgery, I never had it. And I had surgery in May 09 and have dropped a total of 60 lbs. and was told rapid weight loss can cause the uric acid build up.

I have eaten cherries by the bucket fulls, taken colchicine when I felt it coming on and have had 2 cortisone shots... and going for my 3rd shot tomorrow morning. The gout is relieved after the shot - within a day or two, but seems to creep up without warning and the inflammation increases in just a few hours.  Since anti-inflammatories are not on the list of meds we can take, we have limited remedies. Pain meds are okay to help withstand the discomfort, and surgically stapling a bottle of water to our lips is a must, and I'm told I may have to take allupurinol now to prevent it from recurring altogether.

Yes but at this time I don't know what it means.  What was your outcome?

Topic: RE: Arthritis in the knee??
I have had arthritis for years.  It started in my 20's.  Actually when I was in my teens my knees were bad.  The Dr. predicted that I would be immobile in my 30's.  He was pretty close in his guess.   So yes you can have arthritis at a young age.  I am 36 and have needed total knees replacements for a couple of years.  Yes it is common with being overweight.  Every time you take a step you are putting pressure on your knees that is 2-3 times your body weight.  So think about how much that is.  At my highest weight that was over 1200lbs pressure with each step.

No it wont go away with surgery.  The damage is done.  Surgery will relieve some of the pressure on your joints and make them feel better.  It will also help with further damage.  There are exercises that you can do to strengthen your knees.  A physical therapist is good for helping you with figuring it out.

I posted a very similar question on the Main Board today.  I didn't know there was an arthritis forum!  Anyway, I got some really helpful advice from some wonderful people.  If you'd like, please check out my post called Exercise Dilemma.
I hope something works out for you!!  Good Luck Dear!

Topic: RE: Steroids for RA causing weight gain after RNY???
I assume the steroid problems apply to the injections as well.  I have lots of back and neck pain and after this last one do feel like I can eat anything not nailed down.  I hate that.

Topic: Arthritis in the knee??
I just got back from a prompt care clinic after having painful knee for over a month, they gave me krutches and painkillers and took xray and said i have arthritis and he doesn't understand why i would have it at a young age.... is this normal with being overweight? I am also going for an ultrasound tomorrow as he thinks there might be a blood clot. Is this something that would go away with weight loss or surgery? I'm so worried that this might be something that gets worse with time?
