Topic: RE: Arthritis in the knee??
Thank you everyone for your replies and experiences. I found out i too now have it in both knees... and i notice that my feet swell up so bad even if i am not on them all day... now, what I am wondering, is this from the arthritis as well?? I was told I am too young for knee replacements, so i think I will try the water advice... thanks all!

I find tha****er aerobics is excellent for problematic knees and joints. there is no pounding on them in the water. I take deep-water aerobics three times a week. I am 69 years young. doodlesll

 Kathy,
I have not used Voltaren myself but my daughter had  very serious tendinitis and her therapist use it on her. the daughter said she has never had anything that was so successful for her. You might give it a try. See what your Dr. says.   Do you have knee problems? I had both knees replaced and have never been sorry.  doodlesll

Topic: RE: Osteoarthritis in the knee
Lookingup,
that's what I wanted to hear. My Rheumy said that once I have surgery and lose weight, my knees will feel much better.
I pray I have the same results, because right now I am in so much pain and can only take extra strenght tylenol and I use a cane.

Thanks for the info

Topic: Anti-inflammatories After WLS
I'm curious what RNYers take for inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. NSAIDs are out, even as topical creams, because of the  blind pouch and the way NSAIDs affect the body chemically. (This is one of the many reasons I chose the DS instead---I take NSAIDs every day.)

Surely there IS some safe, non-NSAID anti-inflammatory out there you guys take?

Pre-ops visiting this board---this is something to really think about.

Going through the stomach isn't the problem with NSAIDs---it's how they affect you *chemically*. They thin the mucosal lining of the stomach, both the tiny pouch AND the huge remnant 'blind pouch' stomach that can't be 'scoped. Thinning this lining allows your stomach's own acid to cause ulcers.

Ask your doc about Lidocaine patches---they've helped me a lot. And capsacin creams.

Topic: RE: Arthritis PAIN
I am SO sorry that no one told you about the DS (duodenal switch)! It's an alternate, even-more-efffective of WLS that *would* have allowed you to continue to take NSAIDs!

SOME of the pain in my legs has gone away as I've lost weight, but it's done nothing to help the pain in myhands, elbows, shoulders, etc. Maybe it will for you, though.

Topic: RE: Any one with gout, and arthritis in knees
Sorry, I don't get to the arthritis board much. I have had arthritis throughout my body since age 20, and I'm 51 now. There are more than 60 'kins' of osteoarthritis, and then there's rheumatoid arthritis. (If you had the rheumatoid kind, thed've have told you.)

Are you pre- or post-op from WLS? What form of WLS did.will you be having? That's a very important question, because after the RNY you can no longer take NSAIDs, and that's one reason I chose the DS instead.

I take two Aleve twice a day, every day. I *need* to maintain a level of anti-inflammatory in my body at all times. I also use Lidocaine patches, for excess pain in specific areas---mostly my knees and hips.

Heat, especially a heating pad or soaking in ho****er, gives me a lot of relief, too.

Yes I use the Voltaren gel and it helps a lot.  you have to be careful with being in the sun though if you use it.  Hope you have a painless and blessed day.

Topic: Has anyone ever used Voltaren gel ?

I was surfing the web and found something called Voltaren gel, with exceptionally great reviews.  I was wondering if anyone has used it, and how well it works.  It's a topical form of the anti-inflammatory drug Voltaren, which I used to take regularly.  Of course, it says you get all the benefits, but without it going through the stomach.  I have not taken ANY arthritis drug since 2 wks before my surgery, my doctor told me to take it as a last resort (and I am closer to that point now!).   I just had a cortizone shot in my left knee, which has helped a bit.   If the Voltaren gel works so well, I was wondering why I dont hear more doctors and patients talking about it ?
