Just curious..what are proton pump inhibitors? I have RA and Fibro and recently my rheumatologist put me on celebrex (200mg twice a day), methotrexate (5 pills per week 2.5mg) and 1 prednisone daily (smallest dosage, i think 5mg) and tramadol. I checked with my WLS surgeon to know which ones he would approve me to take prior to picking up the prescriptions. He approved my taking everything EXCEPT the tramadol. I was kind of surprised because of the celebrex being NSAID. But surgeon said it was ok for me to take. I guess it varies from doc to doc but I don't want to do anything to irritate my pouch. That's why I'm curious about the proton pump inhibitor.
Thanks for any comment.
Many people with no stomach-altering surgery find that NSAIDS cause stomach bleeding or ulcers without warning. The problem is that it thins the lining of the stomach, whatever shape that stomach may be, and can and does cause ulcers for many people.
There are also those who take NSAIDS after RNY with success, and do not have ulcers. Some of these people use them sparingly, and some use them regularly.
I think it may be an individual thing, and anyone should use NSAIDS with caution.
Proton pump inhibitors give some protection to the stomach lining when taken with NSAIDS.
I read a recent study that showed exercise does improve heart health, but has very little to do with weight loss, unless you are running miles a day, or doing weight lifting for several hours a day.
The majority of people who lose weight don't do very much exercise, considering how few calories are really burned on a treadmill, or by walking a couple of miles a day.
I know it may be going slow, I was 50 when I had my surgery, and lost over a 2 years period, and eventually met my goal.
I have friends who have had hip or knee replacements, and they do very well.
Best wishes.

Thanks for the reply, I have been on my journey for now over 7 years. I was $2,000 dollars from having my surgery when my insurance changed. The new insurance company that I got did not do bariatric surgeries of any kind. So, I have been waiting and waiting until now. I have to go threw a exercise program that my insuance requires but after that I hopefully will be on the schedule to have this done.
The papers that they handed out at the seminar was just insurance info to see if the seminar was covered and if the consult was covered. I just happened to leave early because I had to get to work which was right there where the seminar was being held.
I have a lot of questions for my surgeon mainly because I have rheumatoid arthritis and some of the meds I hear conteracts and makes you gain weight even after having the surgery.
Good luck to you on meeting your goal(s). If you ever want to just chat I am at [email protected].

I have not had the surgery yet I am still on my journey to having it done. Only thing I wanted to say is that I have been diagnosed with rheumy for about two year and have been on Predinsone, Methotrexate, folic acid and tramadol and I have actually lost weight being on all those meds. My metho is 6 pills weekly, Predinsone 5 mg daily, 10 mg if I am having a bad day, folic acid 2 mgs, and tramadol 4 pills a day, but I only take one a day. Hope after being on those meds that the weight will start tapering off you.
I went to the seminar and talked with one of the surgeons and I told him that I was interested in the Roux-en-Y or the banding he told me that because of the meds that I was on that they would only do the gastric sleeve but they did not talk about that type of surgery that day. I am going to make my appointment for my consultation on Wednesday so hopefully I can get in and talk more in depth about it.
Good luck on the losing side. If you ever need to talk I am at [email protected].
Cindy,
Don't give up it took me 7 years and I went before a Judge 3 times before I was approved SS wants you to become tired and fill like you will never win but pray and hang in there I knew I was not able to work and I had a lot of Dr. info. to back me up.
