Topic: RE: Does anyone out there have spinal arthritis?
I have arthritis in my back and my doctor told me the best exercise is swimming! It takes off the pressure from yout spin and makes you feel weightless at the same time! See about a local YMCA or omething of the sort!
Topic: RE: Anti-inflammatories After WLS
I guess it depends on your definition of 'safe'. I'm all about the benefits versus risk thing.
Frankly, NSAIDs have risks for ANYONE. My non-op mother can't tolerate them at all. I, on the other hand, apparently have had a cast-iron stomach all my life, both pre- and post-op. I feel that NSAIDs are as 'safe' for me as a DSer as they were as a pre-op.
The benefits of NSAIDs are something I would never choose to live without, unless the alternative was---well, I can't imagine. I think I'd rather deal with an ulcer than a wheelchair, at least at this point.

In medicine we use the formula " risk vs. benefit ", there is no medical school in the country that will teach you that NSAIDS are safe for any bariatric patient no matter what their procedure.......
Celebrex is considered " safer " but not safe, it effects an enzyme( COX-2) that effects inflammation and pain in the body. There is concern about COX-2 and blood clot formation, a effective COX-2 drug called Vioxx was taken off the market ( voluntarily) by it's own manufacturer because of problems they noted in their own studies.
The FDA felt that Celebrex could stay on the market as long as it had a "black box" warning and it was up to the patient to decide if they were willing to take the( risk vs. benefit ) of possible negative consequences.
I hope your MD discussed this risk with you before he put you on Celebrex.
My arthritis is so severe it is impossible to just walk without terrible pain..........
I pray that we all find ways to lessen our pain, Patrick.

Topic: RE: knee issues
In regard to "Synvisc" , unfortunately it only works in less than %50 of the patients that try it............and it is very expensive, typically $1,500 - 1,800 and is not covered by a lot of insurance companies.
As long as you don't have other contraindications a cortisone shot ( cost $10. ) in the joint capsule of the knee can work wonders........
Most orthopedic surgeons will tell you that it is considered safe as long as you don't exceed 3 shots a year.
I can barely walk on my left knee and it is going to be replaced as soon as I can get clearance from my Lapband surgery tommorrow........I work in a very busy Urgent Care Clinic and I just don't know how long I can hang on as I am in severe pain, limp even with my knee brace on......stopping the Advil for surgery the last week has really been painful.......
I hope all of us find a way to get relief from this terrible burden as soon as possible, Patrick

Topic: RE: VSG,Nsaids, Medicare
I have RA too & I totally agree with you that VSG is the best option for serious arthritis sufferers. I never even considered wls until I found out about the VSG. My primary got really excited when I told her about it and so did my Rheumatologist. I heard that in August that Medicare no longer considered the VSG as experimental and that the coding changed to 43775, (there's a posting about that on the Insurance forum). I was told that UHC covers it now so I am waiting to see if my Medicare Advantage plan well cover it this year. Good luck to us both and everyone else in our boat who are waiting!!
Topic: Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions...VERY BAD TIME OF THE YEAR!
REMINDER....

Hi All,
There is a new OH Online Support Group. The above link will get you there.
It's called Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions.
This group discusses the issue of transfer addictions (also known as cross addictions) after weight loss surgery. there are millions of people who have undergone gastric bypass who are now dealing with issues of addiction transfer.
For a number of people, giving up overeating leads to adoption of a new compulsion.
Addiction transfer occurs when someone is unable or unwilling to rely on one compulsion (for us, it was food) and so switches to a new compulsion (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, internet, porn, etc) due to not having dealt with the underlying issue behind the compulsion.
***Please feel free (and safe) to join and discuss any and/all issues you have regarding Transfer Addiction. ***

Topic: RE: Remicade and Methotraxiate
I inject methotexate. The pills were very hard on my stomach even before WLS so I started injections. I don't know about any studies, but from my own experience, the pills were very harsh. I still have some nausea after I inject, but no pain or "acid' feeling in my stomach The injection once a week is easy to do...
Topic: RE: Psoriatic Arthritis
I have had PA for eight years. It has been very difficult to manage. I have been on Enbrel and Methotrexate for almost all of that time except for a short trial of Humira. I have been very sick this year. I have had every bacterial infection and virus you can imagine for the last 5 months. My skin looks awful and my joints are really sore.
I am hoping to change to Remicade....alot of people have great success with it.

I have been taking MTX for about 8 years. Always by injection. I initially had hair loss, but it stopped. Its important to take the folic acid supplement. I don't know if this prevents hair loss. I have Psoriatic arthritis.
I understand why docs hesitate before giving people with this condition WLS. The medications we take prevent inflammation. You need inflammation to heal. Also the medicine we take usually slows down immune function, so serious infections are possible. I know, I got MRSA and my surgical incision did not heal for over 7 months.
I lost over 200lbs from RNY and I have had many complications. Its important to know what the possible problems are, weigh them out before you have WLS. The risks are much greater if you have this kind of ilness. You need to discuss a plan of action with your rheumatogist and your surgeon before you take the risks.
The surgery got me out of a wheelchair and gave me a new life. I would do it again. But I don't think I was truly aware of the risk I was taking. I can't stress enough how important it is to weigh the risk against serious complications.

Topic: My 5 year old son severly obese....HELP
I get my son once a month for a weekend. I was never married to his mother. To make a long story short My son was a normal weight baby and his mother got married around two years ago and moved a state away. She got divorced about a year ago and lives at home with her parents. I had to get emergancy temp custody with her mother (who my son lives with as well as his mother). His mother has not had a job in 4 years. My son is currently 5.5 years old 4 foot tall and weighs 100.5 lbs. I have repeditly expressed to them my consern over his weight. But they say he does not over eat. When ever he stays with me after he eats its not a hour later before he starts begging for food. I always refuse him more and tell him he just ate and lunch and or snack is not that far away. His mother/grandmother/grandfather say that he does not over eat and they walk him to school so he gets excersise. He is so large he cannot even wipe his bottom and my son told me at school his grandmother asked him to "hold it"..Is that right? What age is a kid have to be before he can wipe his own bottom. Over the last few years I have based my life on getting him once a month. I have thought about getting custody but many more factors come in to it than just getting him ie. my wife and my relationship, I work full time and have another business that requires me to be away in the evening and my son is so "attached, dependant and wraped up into this family that I think he would have a mental breakdown if he left. What are the effects of a 5.5 year old that weighs twice of what he should? When I take him out to eat or shopping people look at me and my wife "his step mom" like we are killing him. My wife and I feed him fresh home made meals everytime he stays with us and we are in pretty good shape. I am at wits end and feel so sorry for him.
