I wrote a post back in May 2012, asking for advised on which should come first the WLS or the Hip replacement. Well I thought I would give you all an update. I had my WLS an RNY in October of 2012 and so far have lost about 81 pounds.
I have another month and a bit to go and I am now scheduled for my first of two hip replacements on May7th. I am really looking forward to it.
The 80 + pounds has made a huge difference in my mobility but not in the pain. The pain is still quite bad especially at night. I usually need 1 or 2 Tylenol#3's to get to sleep and then I wake up at some time in the night and it is so hard (really painful) just to make it the 8-10 steps into the bathroom to get more painkillers. All of these painkillers cause lots of constipation.
So I am really looking forward to my first hip surgery. The Ortho Surgeon says if all goes well he would do the second hip no sooner than 3 months later. We will see. I really would like to at least another 10 pounds before surgery. Originally I had hoped to be down by 100 pounds but that might be a little ambitious, at this point. But another 10 might be doable.
I go to the gym about 4 times a week and work out on a recumbent cross trainer and in the pool. This helps keep the joints moving.
I will be sure to check and let you all know how I makes out after surgery. Thanks for the support.
Hi all it is now November and I am down 110 pounds. and the surgery has worked really well. I am scheduled to have my other hip replaced in March of 2014. Strangely I have been having a little pain in my new hip. It is not the same kind as prior to the surgery more a soreness than the sharp stabbing pains. I am going back to see the Ortho soon. My weight loss has slowed down but I still would like to lose another 40 pounds. I will keep you all up todate. Thanks for the support.

They send a therapist to your home once a week for 6 weeks. They expect that you will do the exercises each day on your own.I have been told it is vital to keep up with the exercise.

I was exercising before my hip replacement. I only missed about 6 weeks of my aquafit class but was able to walk almost right away. Getting out everyday for short walks.
By the time I had my hip replacement I had lost 85 pounds. and I was up and around really fast. You will be walking again in no time. You may find you put on a little weight from your hospital stay. (IV fluids) but not too much.
I suggest you take some protein shakes to the hospital (I took Premier the premixed shakes) and had one each day. I told them to give me a Diabetic diet, that way the meals did not have sugar and they gave me a small snake at night of cheese and crackers.
Overall my weight loss was only slowed slightly for about 2 weeks at the most.
Good Luck, You will do great I am sure. Hugs Deb

You will do fantastic I am sure. I am off to the doctors in another 15 minutes to see him about having my other hip done in March.
Today, I am able to walk, over the holidays, I was able to walk the mall while Christmas shopping. I haven't done that for years.
I am sure that you will do as well. I am 58 and I feel like I am 40.
Debra been following your progress, your an inspiration, I just met my surgeon, was approved by my insurance co. and waiting for date. I have very bad knees and both need to be replaced. The right one will be first ,than , the left. I am have the sleeve done to lose weight to be able to have these replaced. My ortho dr would not even consider it until my BMI is under 40 , so it has been a long haul to this point, anxious , and scared in a way too. I read about people like you that has had tremendous journey that has been positive, your have worked hard thru this but have regained your life back in doing so. I am so anxious to be able to walk and walk pain free. I am so anxiously waiting for a date. but thanks for sharing your story, by the way i am 62.thank s, jo
