i have oa in my right knee and torn meniscus in my left.when i went to ortho last week he held up my xray of my rightknee and said this knee is shot.lol i look and look at my xray and cant figure out what he means .i had rny on 6/1/10 and so far have lost 64 lbs.and i thought the weight loss would help my knees, but i was wrong.he said i will need knee replacement.i go back to him on dec 10   im wondering if it will be a total or partial? my knees sound like crushing up chips  when i (try)  to bend them i cannot bend them back all the way and cannot straighten them all the way either  .so if anyone has any input.please let me know   thanks and hagd :)

Hi I recently had problems with my left knee and the films look like bone on bone. I got a shot of cortisone and am ambulating. I see the ortho in Jan.  The damage was done to mine due to 330 pounds for so many years wore the meniscus down. Let me know what your MD says about you knees.

Just found this thread but thought I'd add my two cents.

I have OA with torn menisci in both knees.  I spent most of January and part of February mostly in bed doing RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) while waiting for the MRI.  My Ortho doc said he could go in and clean up the torn edges of the menisci but there would be no promise that it would make a big difference.  Before doing so he recommended physical therapy twice/week for 6 weeks.  I was very skeptical but went into it with an open mind.  It was such a good decision!  By strengthening the quadriceps and other surrounding muscles I made such progress and have avoided knee surgery.  I may still need it several years from now but I'm currently happy with the results.

Granted, I don't know how our injuries differ but PT helped me gain back my mobility and whenever I slack off on my exercises I can tell a difference.

All the best,
Deborah
