Hip Replacement
Having total hip replacement October 15th.. Could hardly walk at all, so I've decided on the surgery. Not being able to get around and exercise...I gained about 80 pounds...slowly, but steadily. I'm hoping being able to walk again, I will be able to start losing again. Dr. says I need both hips replaced. Would appreciate good thoughts and prayers.
I haven't been on in a very long time, but always keep the site and it's community in my thoughts and prayers. My best to everyone.

Hi V,
I had a total hip replacement 2.5 years ago and I must say that it was the BEST surgery I ever had. Not that I don't love my RNY and being thin, but to be able to walk without a cane is wonderful.
Listen carefully to your doctors and physical therapists and double the exercises he/she gives to you. I spent my disability exercising as much as possible. Today I was 2.5 miles up a hill in my hillside community and every step I take I am grateful. This will definitely help you get your extra weight off.
Like you, my weight and hip pain went together. I'm very happy to help you through this process by offering support and answer questions.
All the best to you. Life will soon begin again!!!

Hi Kathie,
Thanks so much for the good advice. I will heed it. I am having the other hip done too...not sure when. I am looking forward to being able to go for walks again, as you say...without my cane! I'm 61, but I've always been a younger 61...haha. I always had to be to keep up with my grandkids!
Thanks again. I will let you know how it goes and appreciate any wisdom you can share during the healing process.
Take care. You look awesome. I can't wait to get moving again. V

Hi V -
Thanks for the nice compliment. My desire to have back-to-back surgeries (RNY and 6 months later hip replacement) was not for vanity purposes but I stayed very focused on concrete goals:
1) hike again
2) boogie board again
3) sit on the floor and play with my grandchildren again
In order to qualify for RNY I had to gain 25 pounds (to reach 40 BMI) since my arthritis didn't qualify as a co-morbidity. Yikes, I had already gained 25 pounds when I could no longer walk. It was a grueling process and I wasn't sure if my plan would actually succeed.
Today, I've received much more than I originally hoped for. My marriage is stronger than ever, my spouse always beside me to support me along my journey. In less than 2 weeks I'm leaving for a 2-week vacation with my mom/siblings to Italy and cruise the Mediterranean where I will celebrate my 59 birthday.
When I was morbidly obese and couldn't walk, I struggled just to get myself to work every day.
About a month after my hip replacement (while I was still on disability)my husband and I went to see a matinee at the local theater. We arrived early (after my P.T.) and it was a cool, cloudy day. I wanted a cup of coffee to warm me but the only coffee in the movie theater was flavored, so I went out of the theater to a Border's Book store about 1 block away. When I was walking back with my coffee in my hand I was absolutely amazed with myself. Before my hip replacement I struggled when I needed to go from one room to the next just to use the bathroom; but here I was walking 2 blocks to get a cup of coffee! Thanks to medical surgeons and my 2 surgeries I had lost 100 lbs. and was without pain. I asked myself if I could only have 1 of these surgeries, which one would it be??? My answer, without question, was the hip replacement.
You will soon feel more fantastic than you thought possible. I'm with you to support you all the way. If you'd like to send me your private email and we can write, please do so through my profile.
All the best to you on this amazing journey!

Vicuna and Kathie,
I'm glad that you both posted here. You've unknowingly provided support and education for me. My doc says that I have osteoarthritis in both hips....but, the right hip needs replacement now. The catch is, he says he won't do the hip replacement operation until I lose weight. He says that at my weight, 276 lbs, risk of complications are too high.
So, I have been in great pain....and just as Kathie says, I even avoid walking from one room in my house to the next room because it just hurts so bad.
One glimmer of hope came today, as I joined the YMCA and took their 1hr aquatic exercise for people w/arthritis. Afterwords, I sat in the hot whirlpool and let the jet**** my sore joints. Now , tonight, it seems as if there is not as much pain....not every single step is measured and taken gingerly.
Do you have any advice for me? Of course, I know that I need to lose weight to get the operation.....I intend, if all continues to go well....to do more & more of the water exercise in order to hopefully feel better and also to lose weight.
Thanks, Reba

Hi Reba,
I think the water exercises you are doing are great. I've had others tell me, and I've read that the water exercises are excellent. You don't have the weight on your joints, so you can move without as much pain.
I had the gastric bypass and post-op I was ditty bopping all over the place. I could walk so well. I walked and walked and walked...then my arthritis seemed to get worse and I couldn't do the walking and gained 60 to 80 pounds. I bounce up and down. I was so sad...I'd been living life again and now I couldn't walk. I should have kept moving in some way, but I just gave up and sat. Of course it was worse, not moving. I am going to move after the hip replacement if I have to put a fire under myself :)!
You are doing what you need to...moving and watching your diet. I am watching my diet again and have lost 14 pounds. Not much, but losing and not gaining. Keep busy, even if it's only with your hands (days you can't walk well) for I believe keeping a positive attitude by keeping busy will help until your doctor says the hip can be replaced.
I weigh 254 right now. My doctor cautioned that there are things that can go wrong, but since I am otherwise healthy, he is proceeding with my surgery.
Hang in there. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Let me know if you have a question, I'll try to answer it or tell you, I don't know.
Glad to know Kathie and my conversations were helpful.
Take care,
Vicki

Hi,
I had my left hip replaced on October 15th. They tell me that I am 'awesome', haha. I feel great and am walking wonderfully well. Thanks for asking. I had some knee trouble, but they told me that often happens. Hope you continue to do well. I'm actually walking around the house, carefully, without my cane. Woo hoo!
Take care,
V
Hi my name is Ashley I'm 23 years old and I am supposed to have both of my hops replaced very soon. I have congenital hip dislocation and have been dealing with it all of my life. I am always in pain and cannot walk or do anything with my one and three year old kids. I weig 299 now but in the last moth I have lost 30 pounds luckily. I hope you do we'll with your surgery and all I was just wondering from one of he other ladies on here did it change he pain in your hips much and make it easier to exercise?cause right now I can barely get up to get something from my kids let alone exercise or have the energy to go and exercise. I'm hoping this changes after that cause I would love to be back down to 200 or less again. Thanks.
Hi Ashley,
I've had both of my hips replaced now and what a difference. I did have a problem because I have lower back thrombosis, stenosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease...all back problems. As I exercised for my hips, which felt wonderful on both my hips and back, I apparently over did it. My back became so bad I couldn't stand or walk for any length of time.
I decided to have the Interlaminar Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections (ILESI). I'd had them several years ago for my back and they worked wonderfully well. I'm having another one on October 11th. for the lower back, and then we will see what's to be done for the stenosis in the middle of my back.
The one thing that I can't stress enough is to do your exercises faithfully. If you run into some that you can't do then do the ones you can twice until you can do them all.
My feet pre-op, both pointed out to the sides. Now my feet point straight forward. The thought is that the change in this may have caused my back more woe......having told you all I've gone through. I would never regret getting the hip replacements. It's like God gave me a new life. My knees, arthritis, are going to have to be done before long as the arthritis is taking away the good bone. It is miraculous what they can do to help us these days. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You will feel like a new person, and if you never believed in God before, you just might start....haha. God bless and keep you safe, and may he bless your surgical staff. Amen
