The RNY wasn't that bad compared to the knee replacement.  True the first times walking around the nurses station was a little tough, but after the first few days, it wasnt that bad.  And then after the drain was removed, I had no pain and didnt need any pain meds.

Knee replacement is definately worse than childbirth...and I was 20 hours in labor since I was young and stubborn and wanted to try on my own....until I came to my senses and had the C section.

Hi Lady Di,
I had replacement surgery Jan/08. That was the 12 orthopeadic surgery I've had so far. When I had my RNY I didn't know what to expect because it was the abdomen. I can tell you they are nothing alike. With orthopedic surgery it is very painful, I chose to go to a in-patient therapy facility 3 days after the surgery. Stayed for 3 1/2 weeks working all day, every day getting my knee ready for life. It is the only way to go. If you go straight home your care isn't the same, the pt isn't the same and I believe you don't get the best results. I forget often that this knee isn't mine!
Good Luck!

Hi Lady Di,

I too am having a total knee replacement on August 18th! Wow reading all these post
are scaring me to death. I usually do really well with surgery but I know that the knee
sugery requires a lot of PT. I have no choice I have bone on bone and I have tried every
other method to no avail. Good Luck to you and keep in touch, we can comfort each
other.

Hi Katie! I know what you mean about the posts scaring you, I feel the same way. Plus I've talked to people here in my hometown who've had the surgery. Some did well, others not so well. I doubt I will be having my surgery as planned though. I'm going through a divorce and will be losing my insurance at the beginning of August. I can't afford the $520  a month it would cost me to continue on  my soon to be ex's insurance, so I'm just gonna have to live with this bum knee as long as possible. Mine is also bone on bone, has been for years. Losing 75 pounds has helped with the pain management, so I'm doing a little better now than I had been, but still have my bad days. Anyway, good luck to you, hope all goes well. You can still keep in touch and let me know how you're doing. Best wishes!

Hello,

I just had my left knee replaced 12 weeks ago. Not fun, but it had to be done. Yes it's painful. They do some very nasty things to your bones and they have to disect a lot of muscle to get to the joint. I am still in PT (because I also have a hip issue).

Pain meds will be your friend for a little while  ;-)  I was only taking them at bedtime after a week or so.  (I'm pretty stubborn).

I don't think anyone would tell you it's easy. But it's doable and gets better with time. You can do hard things!

Good luck to you and take good care, Pat
RNY 02/02/09 261lbs....... goal 148lbs.... wish me luck

I know this is an old topic and I hope everything went well .  My grandfather ended up having two total knee replacements, one in each knee and though it was painful and it was a long recovery, he tells everyone he would go through it again if he had to because the ending result is he is free of pain and is able to get up and do things once again even with his old age.
The only concern we had was the bill when it came in, it was actually quite a shock.  I found a calculator that might help you determine the bill, basically make sure it was fair.  I know I compared it to my grandfather's bills and it was almost a perfect match.  It takes into consideration your age, insurance, pre-exisiting conditions and even more important, your location and then produces an estimated bill for a knee replacement surgery.  It even includes physical therapy in the bill.  I found it was really great.  I hope it helps you as it did for me!

Hello Friends,

This is John here new to this site. After the insertion of an artificial hip or knee joint is increased in the blood vessels for a time the risk of clots. These clots (medical: thrombus) may then be washed away with the blood flow and block at another location in the body of a blood vessel. Most clots but are metabolized by the body so quickly that they do not cause any discomfort. Sometimes, however, occur in the weeks following joint replacement surgery symptomatic "thromboembolism," for example in the lungs and inside of the leg arterial system (known as deep vein). For prevention of thrombosis, leading to discomfort, there are several medications available. Within 12 to 24 hours after kneereplacement surgery After a hip replacement, it should be taken 32 to 38 days after a kneereplacement 10 to 14 days.
