knee issues

I recently posted about my painful knee, well, while I was in Mexico I noticed my knee didn't hurt as much...of course I was doped up, but both the hospital bed and the hotel bed had good support behind my knees when I was laying on my back.  I just got a memory foam topper for my bed at home and besides it being uber comfy! I think it has also helped ease my knee pain some...of course I'm not up and out working yet, but between that and the anti-inflammation drugs I take I am feeling better.  And I guess the weight loss is helping as well!

Just wanted to share in hopes it helps someone else,

VSG on 02/26/10 with

I am having VGS in February (Can hardly wait) and I suffer from SEVERE knee pain in both knees. I am only 40 and need two knee replacements....however I am too young. I PRAY that I receive some relief once the weight begins to fall off ( YIPPEE!!).

Thanks for the hope!!!

You might also want to ask your ortho doc about Synvisc shots. They did wonders for me.

I'm having knee problems as well.  I thought that once I got a lot of the weight off that it would relieve the knee pain.  Unfortunately even after having lost a 100 lbs I still have the excruiating pain.  Rheumie said that it's due to inflammation and upped my celebrex--to no avail.  I do not agree with her analysis and I'm considering seeing an ortho doc.

Just wanted to give my two cents and get anyone elses thoughts.

My cortisone shots cost me around $120 and I only pay 10% co pay.

And they quit working after a while.

I did the other shots also and got no releive from them.

I am praying that taking the wait off will reduce my pain--if it this gastric bypass does not work I will really be disappointed.

In regard to "Synvisc" , unfortunately it only works in less than %50 of the patients that try it............and it is very expensive, typically $1,500 - 1,800 and is not covered by a lot of insurance companies.

As long as you don't have other contraindications a cortisone shot ( cost $10. ) in the joint capsule of the knee can work wonders........

Most orthopedic surgeons will tell you that it is considered safe as long as you don't exceed 3 shots a year.

I can barely walk on my left knee and it is going to be replaced as soon as I can get clearance from my Lapband surgery tommorrow........I work in a very busy Urgent Care Clinic and I just don't know how long I can hang on as I am in severe pain, limp even with my knee brace on......stopping the Advil for surgery the last week has really been painful.......

I hope all of us find a way to get relief from this terrible burden as soon as possible, Patrick

Update--I'm a few weeks out from the synvisc injections and have been back to work full time the last 4 weeks...my knee is feeling better, no pain, just minor irritation if I overdue it some days...I think the nsaids (volteran) I take daily also play a big part in this improvement.

I hope you all find the relief I have and good luck!
