My knee is killing me!

I've had arthiris in both knees (osteo) for the past few years, had cortizon shots, torn menicus and arthoscopy on both, had supritz injections in one of them...currently one of my knees is giving me hell, surgery was done in april of this year, fell on it a few weeks ago but no damage...I can only just get thru a day at work (desk job) I try to do errands after work, but the pain by this point is too much and I go home.

I'm scheduled for WLS in 2 weeks...can someone please please please tell me that having this procedure and losing weight will help with the pain!  I can't take much more, I'm not that old but my quality of life is majorly suffering...and how am I supposed to walk and exercise to help the weight loss?  Or heck, just walk around after surgery on meds to get rid of the gas pains?

thanks for letting me vent, none of my friends have these issues so it's hard for them to relate and I'm sure they're sick of my whining!

Any weight that you lose will help your weight-bearing joints.  The weight loss could postpone the inevitable, at least a couple of years.   But I will be honest with you.  it sounds like you could be heading for replacement.  Some situations are not reversible, IMO.

My personal saga is the reverse of yours.  I had both knees replaced.  Now I want WLS because I don't  want to end up replacing the replacements.  I was bone on bone on both.  I had arthros but I was never a candidate for synvis.  I don't regret my decision.  But it was grueling.  All the best!

Vicious cycle; I'm well aware.  You're  in pain, it hurts to move, you become more sedentary, and you keep gaining weight.  I recommend aqua therapy.  You won't feel like 425 lbs. in the water.  Overeaters Anonymous would be good support for taking off the lbs.  Get up and do something....Baby steps!

Hello Katie
I understand exactly what you are going thru as I am in the EXACT same position it is next to being healthy my only motivation for wls I have applied to OHIP for coverage and awaiting a decision.YES it will help will it cure our osteo NO but it will most likely I am told ease a great deal of pain and delay the need for replacements until i am at a more appropiate age ( I am 47) they liek to wait till at least mid fifties as second replacements do not tend to be successful due to deteriotation of natural bone.hope this helps

Thank you for posting this, I thought I was alone, I have it in my left knee and right hip, my doctor assured me that WLS will help and will extend knee replacement by years and that I need to strengthen the muscle surrounding the knee to help further.

Point well taken about the exercise.  I did not before I had surgery.  I had it in my mind that it hurt and I did not want to add to te pain and suffering.   Well  guess what... It hurt like a mother  when I was forced to do exercises in physical therapy.   One way or anoher you have to strengthen the muscles.  Good Luck.

Hi Katie:
Sorry to hear you are in pain.. I will be having my knee replacement of March 9th.  Im really scared, but my knee is bone on bone all the way around.  The ortho told me that between now and the replacement day one of the nerves in my knee could be affected and cause paralysis in the bottom part of my leg.  I have lost 100lbs, my surgery was Jan 2005.  Im still not where I need to be, due to the fact that I really have not been very copliant when it comes to exercise. Iam kickstarting my program like I had surgery yesterday and try to get some weight off before the knee replacement.  Good luck to you and if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them if I could.

Denise
The simple pleasures in life, like taking a bath, are so ordinary to some but to me tis such a blessing.

Losing weight WILL make things better, and, smart girl, you're having a form fo WLs that will allow you to continue to take NSAIDs! You'll be amazed how much better you feeel this time next year.
