Hi everyone...I had RNY on 5/15/09 and I have been off my RA meds (because of surgery) since May 1st and I am really in a lot of pain.  Does anyone have any suggestions/comments?  Any at home stuff that I can do to relieve some of the RA pain?  I also have Fibro which is not helping either..90% of my pain since surgery has been RA pain instead of surgery pain.  I have some "after surgery" pain but it is SO managable compared to the RA pain...Thanks so much for listening...Amy

Very sorry to hear about your RA. I have it also and can sympathize with you. I have not had surgery yet but have a great deal of fear because of this. The only thing I can suggest is rest as often as possible until your able to restart your meds. Take care of yourself !!!

Maybe your rheumatologist can prescribe something that is not an NSAID temporarily till you can go back on the regular meds. Good luck!

Thanks Holly...I am hoping that something will give soon.  I have my 2 week checkup next week so I am hoping he will go ahead and let me get back on my meds.   Amy

Thanks...I hope I didn't scare you.  The pain from the surgery has not been bad at all, if I can just get through the next couple of weeks I'll be fine and I know it will all be worth it in the end.  I go back to the doc next week for my 2 week checkup and I'm hoping he will then let me get back on my meds. Are you just starting to learn about the surgery. How far along are you in the process.  I thought it was funny when I seen where you were from.  I also live in NC and my last name is "Denton". I don't know how close you are to looking for a doc but I went to Dr Chapman in Greenville and he is a really good doc....I wish you the best and keep me updated.

I'm really sorry to hear you are suffering mommy and unfortunately, I have no suggestions for you.  But I also have arthritis (though not RA-mine is simple osteo), and have been off Celebrex (for the most part) for a year now in preparation for a proximal RNY.  I do have a question for you: what was your plan for managing the RA and Fibro pain post-surgery?  Is that not working?  I want to learn from others who go before me, so maybe I can avoid some pitfalls.   I pray you will find relief!

Hi, I also hope you find the relief you need. I'm just trying to find out about RNY surgery. I lost about 80lbs 2yr ago (fluke) they say it was my thyroid gland, but afterwards even w/o levothroyxin my level was fine. I have gained back half the weight and every joint can feel it. I am on RA meds, celebrex and pain meds for degenerative disc disease. Do you have to go off all your meds before having RNY and how long afterwards. Hope I'm in the right topic to ask these questions. I came here because of the RA.
