osteoarthritis in hip
Is there anyone on here who has/is suffered with osteoarthritis in the hip? I have heard the weightloss will help but has anyone on here actually had the arthritis pain to diminish or disappear or are you still dealing with the pain and daily meds? If you have found success with a decrease in the pain after the surgery, how long did it take? I just had my surgery on 12/19 and I know it probably too soon to tell.
Please share your experiences with me.
Thanx!
Hey:
I suffer from osteoarthritis in my hip also. In fact I just got x-rays and consultation last week. My surgeon won't do the hip replacement surgery until I lose the weight. I thought I might be able to have the hip surgery first, but like he said all that will do is cause greater surgeries because the weight will cause the hip to pop out of place and wear it down. So I have applied for WLS.
I really believe that wt loss will ease the pain in your hip; when I lost 25 lbs. once I could feel the better difference in my back and hip. I know it will make a big difference. But I am still looking forward to the hip surgery after I lose the weight...hip surgery is a simple operation these days(they have laparascopis procedures also), but it is still major surgery just like WLS.
I have a question for you, are you still allowed to take your pain medication after your WLS? If so that is great, I take Naproxen and I want to take it after WLS, it will help me to be more mobile as I lose weight...walk and work out to lose wt faster after the WLS. The faster I lose wt, the faster I get healthy and can have hip replacement surgery.
Take Care

I just has WLS on Friday 12/19. To date I have not been allowed on the Alleve. I stopped taking it a week or 2 before surgery. Since it has aspirin and will cause bleeding they told me to stop it. I am on liquids only now so I cannot take Alleve. To be honest, my hip is not bothering me now - I have gut pain!
Actually, my hips got WORSE for a while after WLS. When I'd lost about 80 pounds, they were TERRIBLE!!! Apparently the rapid weight loss has shifted my center of balance and put stress in differenct places. But yes, they are now better than they were.
However, I had the DS, and I still take Aleve daily. I hae arthritis throughout my body, and I knew that losing weight wasn't going to make my hands feel better. (*grin*)

My pain did not go away after I lost the weight, but I am in the advanced stages of Osteoarthritis. I am planning on having my hip replacement next year. I have lost some of the associated lower back pain. I have been working with a personal trainer to straighten my core muscles and that also helps. I’m keeping the alleave, anti inflammatory and Celebrex to a minimum. I don’t want to stress my kidneys or liver. It’s been 4 years since my surgery and I lost 130 lbs. The weight has been off for 3 ½ years with only a 10 lb gain. (Muscle is up and body fat is down)
I feel for ya hun! I have OA from my toes to my neck. Every joint is affected. I also have fibromyalgia which adds to the pain. I had my RNY WLS May 13, 2008. I have lost 140 pounds since 1/1/2008. The weight loss has helped a lot (pressure on joints) but OA is chronic and we will always have it. See your DR/PCP about pain meds. I am permitted to take tramadol for pain. I cleared it with my bariatric surgeon. So if your PCP does give you an RX be sure to clear it with your Bariatric surgeon. I had to get the weight off to be prepared for joint replacements. Best wishes!
