Fibromyalgia is a condition where you feel chronic pain in certain parts of your body; it is a muscular pain especially around the joints. There can also be centralized pain felt in the spinal chord, brain, neck shoulders etc. People with fibromyalgia generally complain of pain in the joints, but it actually is the muscles and the tendons around it that cause the pain, it can be excruciating sometimes and can be a continuous throbbing pain. People suffering from Fibromyalgia also show symptoms of depression, sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, stress and many others, which are caused due to the pain.

Usually Fibromyalgia affects women over 30, but even children and men are sometimes affected. There is no known cure for fibromyalgia, however you can overcome this symptom over a period of time with natural cures like herbs and dietary supplements that help with the condition.

I was diagnosed with Fibro in 2001 but, feel that I have had it alot longer. I had by RNY in 2007. I have never heard of it being common post RNY. There are many factors that contribute to it that include sleep apnea, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and others. It is more common in women than men. There is no cure and living with it can be tough due to the varying levels of pain you endure daily. At least now there are a few medications they have found that help relieve the symptoms to a degree. One thing is to find a doctor that believes in it as there are many out there than do not and think it is all in our heads. The National Fibromyalgia Association has some good information also if you think you might have it. The first step is ruling out there is not another disease process going on before you rush into thinking you have fibro. It is an immune suppressing disease and that is what makes it so hard to diagnose. There is no real test that can confirm it for sure other than ruling out other diseases and the manual exam. There is promise for the future in their will be a test to confirm but, as far as I know we are not at that point yet.
Take care, Karen

So did you have blood work or special tests done?.  My docs diagnosed me just by a physical exam and me telling them my symptoms.I hate this disease and my family really doesn't get it.  Since they can't see the disease, it is hard for them to relate to.  KimM

Thre is no specific test for fibromyalgia.  It is diagnosed based on the patients symptoms and a physical examination

The American College of Rheumatology has more information about Fibromyalgia.
