SHARON....; )
I have osteoarthritis - and have had 5 surgeries to replace joints in my body. Right now my knees are acting up. My doctor is going to have me try something called Effluxa - it's supposed to be better than steroid injections. I haven't started the treatment yet - so I can't tell you how it's worked for me.
AS FOR EXERCISE...
I am a certified Arthritis Foundation Aqua Program Leader. One of the best forms of exercise for people who have arthritis is to find an Aqua Arthritis class. Make sure they keep the pool between 84-86 degrees F. This class is designed to help relieve pain and increase range of motion. AND - the best thing about it is you get to giggle with other people while you're in the pool!
Here in Ohio, Aqua Arthritis classes are offered at YMCAs, YWCAs as well as city recreation centers and private fitness clubs.
Other water classes I hear women who have arthritis say they enjoy include water ai-chi, water yoga, and water stretching. I hope you find something near you that you can join.
The way my doctor put it is I can do any excercise I want as long as my feet don't touch the ground or push/pull any weights....in other words GET IN THE WATER!!! LOL I agree water aerobics is wonderful...I haven't tried one specifically for arthritis because it's usually during the day when I work. I'm even joining the Y after surgery instead of keeping my membership to the city rec because I'll be able to do deep water classes more often.
Good luck and just keep swimming!
