I would NEVER recommend the band to anyone. If you look at my profile, you'll see that I've had a lot of problems, which I believe started because of the band. The doctor who put it in didn't tell me it could erode into your stomach! He also didn't tell me that it's only supposed to stay in for 5 years and then it has to be replaced. One of the replies to your post suggested researching all the options. That's great advice! Make sure you're familiar with all the possible complications of the procedures and be sure you're prepared!!!! I wasn't and my life is way different now then I ever expected before the surgery, and it's not because of the weight loss!
Good luck to you in whatever you choose!

I personally wouldn't get the band, or the RNY for that matter. We are all different and one surgery doesn't suit everyone, but you would be doing yourself a huge disservice if you didn't research all the main surgeries ( band, DS, RNY, sleeve) and look at the statistics. Ask on each of the boards about the surgeries, about pros, cons, and links to accurate studies, and many people are eager to help. Surgeons unfortunately are not good sources about the different surgeries, as some have inaccurate information if it's a surgery they don't do, or will claim they perform it to get you in the door, so research first, select what would be best for you, then pick the surgeon. If you have any DS questions I could answer, I'd be happy to help. Good luck!

For your own benefit, please research until your comfortable with your decision.  I have a Vertical sleeve gastrectomy which is also restrictive only.  I was going to go for the band initially and am very thankful at this point that I researched further and came across the VSG.  It may be that the band fits best for you, but at this point it sounds as if you aren't quite sure, and with WLS, I believe we need to be sure!

I am scheduled for lapband surgery next Friday, but have had no luck talking to lapband patients as this is so new in our area.  The support meetings I have attended all have had the open gastric bypass and they all seem ecstatic.  I wonder if I am making the wrong choice.  I have to call them tomorrow am and let them know to reschedule/change surgery.  Any suggestions?

Topic: RE: Antidepressants and Gastric Band
This post looks really familiar to me, so I apologize if I already answered it on another OH forum.

I'm not sure why you would post this on the Regrets forum.

I take Lexapro and Remeron.  I used to take Trazodone but it stopped working for me so I switched to Remeron, which has similar actions and side effects to Trazodone.  None of these meds has ever had any effect on my weight, pre-op or post-op.  In my experience, untreated depression. anxiety and panic attacks are much more likely to contribute to weight gain than these meds are.

If you are able to eat more than you think you should, maybe you need a fill?

Is it not possible to believe in your own surgery without putting someone else down?  It is called a "support" board for a reason!!!!

What size bougie is too small?  I think 32-34 is average.  I have seen 40 though.

I am in the process of having VSG with Dr. Aceves.  I had the lap-band and hated it.  Anyway, I chose VSG because you do not have to worry about the malabsorption factor.  For me, I do not want to have to take tons of vitamins daily.  Heck, I forget to take my birth control pill.  LOL  The good think for me is if...if I do gain weight back in the future, then I can always get the DS.  Good luck with your choice.

Topic: Dr. Caruana Sisters Hospital Oct. 8, 2008
Hello Everyone,

If I get the cardiologist's blessing this Tuesday, Dr. Caruana will perform my RNY (open) at Sister's Hospital, Buffalo on Wednesday, October 8th.

I'm 90% excited and 10% scared.  I'll be 65 years old in October and I sure don't see many women my age on these pages.  For a number of reasons, my family and friends will not be available to come see me while I'm in hospital.  I know it will be lonely, but I'm prepared for that.  Instead of going home to an empty house immediately after discharge - I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada - it has been suggested that I spend a few days or a week at one of the post-acute centers in Buffalo.  I have chosen Legacy in Williamsville.  I hope I have made the right choice.

I'm so glad I found this site and will be thrilled with any support you can give me.  :-)
