Dnt know much about reversals heard once person got a revision after five years of stretching out her tool.

But I know I hated myself and told myself wtf did I do this to myself, the pain, the restriction, the uncomfortableness of it all.  I can say this about three to four months I had energy. Afer two years post op I got pregnant and enjoyed pregnancy.  I had lost almost all baby weight and still have ten I am working on now.  Im on the five day pouch test and a lil headachey today but Im saying this.  I wish I wouldnt of waited as long as I did, in the beggingg I hated that I did this now I thought Id never be happy but now all I can say is I could of done this years ago..

i pray you find your niche and soon.....stay positive as much as you can, the thoughts are unbearable at times, keep your chin up girl

Hello,
My surgeon who originly did my band told me it's there for life.He never mentioned anything about it being changed after 5 years. Was this because you had erosion?Or thats the norm for your doc?Either way I regret the band too. However I would like to know more about it being changed? Thanks

Hello! It is October 8th, and I have just finished reading your post. Your surgery was today!!!! I hope that you are doing well!!!

I am 60, actually I will be 61 in December. Weight has been a struggle to me all of my life. I am waiting for a surgery date for RNY at Travis AFB in CA.

I just wanted you to know that you are not alone in this! And I also wanted you to know that someone thought of you on your surgery day.

Love to hear how you are doing when you are home again - or even sooner if you feel like it and can get to a computer.

Can you explain why you chose the Duodenal Switch over gastric bypass?

Read the revision board and you'll see many gastric bypass and lapband patients needing revisions.   Not so with the DS.  That tells a big part of the story.

Hi, I have BCBS of Michigan and I was able to get my band out and RNY covered 100%.  I had a hiatal hernia and a slip that was "repaired" but the band still sat too high for my stomach to tolerate.  I think my surgeon just documented all the problems I had (reflux and vomiting are NOT reasons to remove it), but I did have gastritis and esophagitis when I was scoped (even empty I would have problems with reflux and vomiting).  I don't know the exact wording, but he basically pointed out all the problems and said that if I continue to work with my band, insurance will end up paying more for that than if I just got the revision to RNY.  I was born fat, had a satiety problem since I was born, and I have tried everything to get the weight off.  I need hunger help, portion help, and the result will be weight loss.  That is why every diet failed me because I could only go so long with the severe hunger and tiny portions.  I ate so many veggies, but I still had problems with hunger.

I wish you all the luck in the world!  You should be able to find a way to get your band out with insurance.  If you try to fill it and get reflux again... maybe have a scope done to check for erosion, inflammation (esophagitis or gastritis)?

Good luck!

Hi Laura!  It's Alyssa (former bandster, now with RNY).  I didn't have that virus, but my band basically got too tight, caused too much inflammation... and turned out in the end that it slipped and I had a hiatal hernia.  Fixed both, still too tight.  Threw up most solids, so I went to slider foods and gained back all 145 pounds that I lost.  It's heartbreaking to do that, but I was hungry, deprived of real food and ended up eating milk shakes, milk, and oatmeal.  Not good... but that is how I survived.  My surgeon, for a year, told me it was in my head.  The surgeon that fixed the slip and HH thought all would be wonderful.  Nope.  I saw another surgeon (moved to a new city) and that surgeon said the band must come out.  It is not normal to only eat soft foods and throw up anything solid (aka healthy).

Now... I can tell you I truly regret my RNY at this point.  I am just over 2 months post-op and am constantly nauseated, have been hospitalized for intractable vomiting, and I had to take a medical leave from school.  So, I moved up to Michigan to stay with my dad while I "recover".  Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.... not fun.  I lost 53 pounds so far (out of 206 pounds to lose), but I can't celebrate it just yet because I feel so sick that this is the worst way to lose the weight!

Anyways... hope this helped in some way.  Feel free to PM.  I know several band to bypass people... and so far all of them LOVE their RNY... me... having a harder go at things, but I was also sick for well over a year and had so much swelling and scar tissue from the band surgeries.

Well, Talk with you soon!

Dianegrace, there are quite a few long term banders that have never experienced the problems indicated here.  Not all have those problems.  I have had mine only for about six months and I have had no problems whatsoever, now I know that could change but I do not regret it at all.  Try the lap band forum for more information from people a lot further out than me.

Was this question for me? Well, I'll answer it anyway-lol.
Lots of reasons.

The main reason was the better overall statistics for percent of excess weight lost, and long term success in maintaining that weigt loss.

I didn't want to be one of the lucky ones who "dump".

I was worried about the reactive hypoglycemia (sp?) that more and more RNYer's are mentioning.

I didn't want to have a stoma, since they often become stretched, or to get too small from scar tissue making food get stuck, and are prone to ulcers since there is no longer protection for the attached intestine from the stomach acids.

I didn't want a "blind stomach" because they can't be scoped for things like stomach ulcers or cancer.

The only things that I initially thought were negative turned out not to be any different - taking supplements for life (both RNY and DS must supplement, just different ones) and the bathroom / farting issues. Having had the surgery, I now see these things were hugely exagerated, and in fact my bathroom habits are now predictable (once in the morning, thats it) and my irritable bowel syndrome seems to be resolved - sorry if thats TMI.

Lastly, I looked at the regrets board, and the revisions board, and found lots of bands and RNY's who wished they hadn't had their surgery, but to this day have not found a person *****grets their DS. I can't overstate what a big deal this surgery was to me (and I self paid) and I wanted to do it only once - I did not want another surgery to fix things later. I hope that helps, and I'm happy to answer any questions about my DS if you have any more.
