Topic: RE: VSG Regrets?

Hi Deb - I'm scheduled for my VSG with Dr. Jossart at LapSF on Nov. 12th so I came to this message board for the same reasons you did.  I have a lower BMI (@33.5 or so) and decided that I did not want to risk the malabsorption and go through the possible dumping from RNY and other complications.   Dr. Jossart felt that the VSG was the best choice for me as well.   I decided I just don't want to lose my pyloric valve. The results they are seeing is that VSG is more often than not just as successful as an RNY.  He said some surgeons just don't make the sleeve small enough.  I believe Dr. Alverez has had a lot of success so he seems to know what he is doing.   And I do understand that I have to change my life style but I usually am a healthy eater and not a snacker and I enjoy working out so I think I am hoping this will be just what I need to help me control my hunger.  But I am self -pay as I am sure you are and it is going to cost me 17K - ouch!  So I will be really disappointed in if I am not successful - but that is even more motivation to keep me inline.

My sister recently had the RNY and she decided that she needed the restriction on eating sweets and high fats so felt that was the best solution for her.  To each their own.  I have read many success stories and some struggles with both surgeries.  I think you have to just be prepared to watch what you eat so as not to sabotage it.  Best of luck on your surgery, I look forward to hearing how you are doing.

Have you tried taking a supplement I believe is call biotein, it might be spelled differently.  My sister had an RNY and take it and she says she looses less hair now than before the surgery.  Also my college roomate used rogian (again I may be spelling it wrong) after her plastic surgery to help grow back her lost hair quickly and it worked.  She was able to stop using it after a few months.  I have surgery coming up next month and these are things I plan to use to hopefully even prevent hair loss.  good luck

Topic: enlarged stoma
Hello All,

I am feeling REALLY crappy right now.  I went for an endoscopy yesterday for this severe burning and irritation i have in my "stomach" .  Well it seems that my stomach is fine, there is no irritation, but my stoma was huge.  Its was almost the size of the pouch itself.  Now I am reading about 2 ways that they fix the stoma but I don't want anymore surgery.  I just don't I am sick of it.  People left and right who have the surgery are fine, but me .... no.  I have had trouble with it from the beginning.  FIrst  I had esophageal spasms (OH MY GOSH THEY ARE PAINFULLLLL!!!) then I had severe acid, now I come to find out my stoma is huge, and I am going to require more stuff I cannot afford.  People tell me its because I drank diet soda on a year out of surgery others tell me its because I overeat.   well....I overeat cuz the food doesn't stay in the pouch, it just goes down, and I am constantly hungry.  Does anyone know why the stoma enlarges?  PLEAse help, I am becoming depressed and desperate.

The first few months are so hard and it's a complete and total adjustment. You are probably feeling the very normal "buyer's remorse" that most of us experience after something this life altering. IT WILL GET BETTER. Take comfort in knowing that what you are experiencing now is the worst of it and that every day you will be an inch closer to feeling back to "normal". I'm 5 months out and eat almost everything (in very small portions). But I also follow my doctor's advice about supplements, water intake, and exercise. Go easy on yourself, in the beginning it's almost impossible to really "get it right". Hang in there though, as time progresses you will start to almost forget you even had surgery and your new habits will just become a lifestyle. It doesn't bother me at all at this point that I can't gorge myself or binge on unhealthy things that made me fat and miserable in the first place and lead me to choose surgery. When you're feeling down try and think back on the reason you had the surgery in the first place and consider speaking with a counselor or supportive friend if you need a shoulder to lean on as we all do once in a while. Best of luck on your journey, and remember, it WILL get better!

Topic: After band removal questions

I know some of you have had your band removed for one reason or another but my question is have you kept the weight off since the removal?

My band eroded and I had to have it removed in Aug. 08 and since I have only gained 3 pounds.  I try to keep the thought that I can't eat much and think the band is still there and hope I can continue to do so thru out my life like this but I sure miss my band buddy.
I have come to know that I can now gulp tha****er down fast but after I do I regret it cause my stomach will hurt like I've eaten a huge meal.  I tell myself this is my band buddy getting on to me from the band heaven.

How has everyone else done after the band removal?????

I am still pre op for a few more weeks but had the same set of concerns.  I am going with the rny because   1.  I don't trust gadgets...Every time I got a tummy ache or cramp I would be worried that the band was messed up... 2.  Bodys heal....After the initial recovery  my body will hopefully adapt and  be just fine...Bodies are amazing machines with lots of built in survival stuff ...It will ajust. 3.  I hate going to doctors and the thought of fine tuning the fill procedure would be awful.   I am not that in touch with my body, let alone a gizmo...how could i ever know when to stop...I would probably give up trying and accept less that remarkable results. 4.  Apparently the detached stomach will forget to get hungry and stop sending signals...A biggie!  hard enough to tell head hunger from body hunger either way... 5. I feel like I can re learn my own body ...i don't want a doctor or device in the middle of the process. 6.  I don't have time to wait and don't want to risk failure with the lap band.   I have bad knees, hips and so much back pain...Im 50 years old...I am all about getting the weight off now why I can still live to reap the benefits. 7.  If I ever felt the port or band I would probably freak and feel like something out of Alien... I have had major surgery on my spine before...It took me quite a while to trust that all the added hardwear was where it belonged and working.     I finally know now that it is ...but even the fact that it is there makes me uneasy.   Good luck with your decision...YOU  ASKED!
OMG!  You must be my twin!  I'm 47 and have the exact same issues and you and also think the exact same way about gastric bypass vs. lap band.  How eerie!
