Topic: I know this sounds dumb....

hey everyone!!
I have a question and I'm a little embarassed to even ask it....
to those of you who had WLS...did you ever regret getting it done because you didn't feel like you got your "me" time in?? I'm a 27 year old mother of 3 kids, i had my first at 17 and my last when i was 22, I'm done having kids....but now i feel like it's my time to have a little fun now that they're getting older...i've always put myself on the back burner and i want to do things for myself...i am over weight, i have to lose approx. 120lbs to be at a normal weight. i don't have any co-morbids, i take pain meds which i hate cuz they knock me on my butt, and other than some self image issues once and a while, i feel fine.
i know it sounds like i'm not ready for surgery, but i have been doing research and trying to get my facts straight first, there's a couple things that scare me. i have a family friend who got it done in the states and on the way home she got really sick, she's almost died 4 times and has been in and out of the hospital for over a year, she's lost the weight but it's more due to the fact of being so sick, not the actual surgery. Plus, everyone is different, you can't predict how you're going to react to such a trauma, i've read of ppl getting very depressed right after surgery and actually regretting it. It's also mentioned in a book about WLS that I recently finished reading. When you have a love for food that got you into the position you're in now, how do you cope?? I'm starting to ramble, haha, I guess i just have some stuff to vent out, that's all...
is there anyone out there that regretted getting surgery because they thought they weren't ready due to wanting a bit of a party scene???? i've heared you can't drink alcohol....well not for the first 6 mos after anyways....but i guess i can gear my question more to 'do you feel like you're missing out'? while your friends are having fun and you're sitting there waiting to go home because you know you can't have the type of fun they're having....it's just my thoughts and i'm hoping to get some feedback on them because i'm just trying to get a feel for how it may be after surgery....i don't want to regret anything and any input would help!!
thanks!!

Topic: Questions
Has anyone had RnY after having Thyroid cancer and surgery? I had thyroid cancer in 2000, thyroid taken and parathyroid was damaged. Now have to watch calcium levels very closely. I'm curious if anyone else has ever had this after having issues like this to begin with. Worried that the malabsorption will be too much to handle.

Also curious if the surgery helped spontaneous bladder issues?!? (problems when you cough or sneeze)

Thanks for all your help!

Topic: Groups & Activity

The last several months have been fairly busy ones here at OH and we are really excited
about this upcoming release. First, long overdue is the public release of OH Groups. You
will now be able to start and  manage your own public groups. Second, is a major update
to Health Tracker....Activity! We are planning to release these new features on Wednesday evening, October 7, 2009.

OH Groups

Getting to OH Groups is easy. Just click on the Groups tab at the top of any page on ObesityHelp. OH Groups allows you to start and manage your own groups, you can find groups that suit your interests and find support groups in your area.
If you are looking for an OH Group that focuses on a specific topic, you can browse groups by category.

Activity

To get to your Activity Tracker, click “My OH" at the top of any page on ObesityHelp, select “Health Tracker" on the left and then click the “Activity" tab.

Understanding your total daily caloric expenditure requires more than just knowing how many calories you burned on the treadmill. In your Health Tracker settings area you are now able to estimate the caloric expenditure of your resting metabolic rate (RMR) and lifestyle. These estimates are integrated and displayed with the caloric expenditure of the activities you have logged.
Your exercise log allows you to search for and add strength training exercises, cardiovascular exercises and general activities to your daily log. Caloric expenditure is auto calculated for a number of activities already included in our database of exercises. Pie charts display details about caloric expenditure and time for each type of activity.
Sets can be added and subtracted from strength training exercises. Reps and weight used can be entered for each set.
A number of details can be tracked for cardiovascular exercises and general activities. Some of these variables include, time, distance, calories burned, average heart rate, average power, altitude gained and average grade.
If you can’t find the exercise or activity you have participated in, you can also add your own custom exercises.
Other updates include the ability to create list of your favorite exercises, reports have been updated to include a number of activity items, the nutrition search has been enhanced and we have managed to slip in a sweet macronutrient report under the “Reports" tab.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the features in this release, please submit those here.

If your are new to ObesityHelp or have not used ObesityHelp's Health Tracker before, you can learn about the first release here and the second release here.

Enjoy!

Topic: RE: Anyone 3+ yrs post op? I want to hear about any complications
I'm three years out with the gastric sleeve.  My insurance covered it 100% after I "explained" it to them.  I was their first VSG approval.

No complications, no problems and I have been able to easily maintain a normal BMI, below my  goal.   I am SO lucky, so thankful and so blessed to have had this smooth of an experience with my WLS.

I have no comparison with the other (also very good) surgeries, but I'd do the VSG again in a heartbeat.

Topic: RE: I hate my band.
I have only lost 20 lbs in one year and 2 months time.
I hate the band.
It doesnt work..
I am having mine removed.

I would not recommend this surgery to anyone.
I will not  do any more surgeries.

I am just dieting on my own.

When I complained, people just told me I was negative and desrved to fail
Yes people on here.

I am doing a high protein diet right now. It seems to be working
And I am grateful

But this band which makes me choke, vomit and whose
port is pooking out of my stomach needs to go.

Topic: RE: RNY reversal
I am in the same boat you are in. My surgery was Sept. 10th and I researched for 2 years before I had this surgery. Like you said it all looks good on paper, but I am miserable also. I HATE the protien shakes and I HATE the taste of sugar free stuff. Everything has a gritty taste to me incl. water and I don't understand why. I feel like I have a constant film in my mouth no matter how many times I brush my teeth. I am always tired and I do take my vitamins. I just do not feel like myself anymore. The weight loss is good and all but to have so many restrictions is just crap! I get cravings so bad for a coke! I know the point is to get healthy and lose weight but at what sacrifice? If I had to do it over again I would have done whatever it took to lose the weight on my own rather then resort to surgery.  You would think in this day and age they would come up with something better.

Hi Rere,

You'll do fine, I'm sure.  Congratultions on getting this weight-loss ball rolling!

You might want to post this to the lap band forum.  I think you'd get alot more support than from the "Regrets" forum  .  Good luck and I hope to be reading of your smooth procedure and wonderful weight loss.
