A lot of people do phenomenally well with it with weight loss, at least in the short term.  There's not enough long term research to support its efficacy farther out, though, so I am leery of it.  As you know, the sleeve can stretch over time, increasing your eating capacity.

Not trying to start any surgery war as I know everyone's choice is very individual, but have you looked into the DS?  You get the sleeve component as well as the malabsorption which helps to maintain your weight loss several years out.  Just saying to look at all available options before you decide.

Edited:  Holy **** I did not realize this thread was so old... lol  Leaving my response, though, for anyone else who may peruse.

Topic: Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions

http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/crossingtotransferaddictions/

Hi All,

There is a new OH Online Support Group. The above link will get you there.
It's called
Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions.

This group discusses the issue of transfer addictions (also known as cross addictions) after weight loss surgery. there are millions of people who have undergone gastric bypass who are now dealing with issues of addiction transfer.

For a number of people, giving up overeating leads to adoption of a new compulsion. Addiction transfer occurs when someone is unable or unwilling to rely on one compulsion (for us, it was food) and so switches to a new compulsion (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, internet, porn, etc) due to not having dealt with the underlying issue behind the compulsion.

***Please feel free (and safe) to join and discuss any and/all issues you have regarding Transfer Addiction. ***

WE WILL SUPPORT EACH OTHER WITHOUT JUDGEMENT!

Thank you both for your replies.  I am still considering, but my doctor has me trying a diet pill in teh mean time.  I have really gotten what I eat down with this, and I am starting to loose some.  Whether this is going to help in the long run I don't know think so, but I am trying to learn from this and train myself and my body to want and need less.. and my hands to stop giving my mouth more.  I have considered both gastic adn the lapband.. I was really leaning ot the lapband because of safety reasons until I found out about all the complications.. and was afraid with my IBS and stomach swelling at times bloating that I would have to be out a lot of costs and trouble to unfill and refill and unfill.. you get the picture..   My doctor wants me to go to the free seminar that the WLS Doctors put on... He thinks that will give me a better understanding and then see about getting a evaluation.  So I am getting closer, but truthfully hoping I can change on my own, even though I know it is going to take longer....   Though I haven't and won't knock WLS out the door either...  I guess I am at a wait and see place if that makes sense.  Thank you all again for your help.. it means more than you truly know!

I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, no.  In fact, I would say the opposite.  I missed out on stuff when I was overweight.  I couldn't take long walks because I got too tired and out of breath.  I recently took a trip to an indoor water park.  I couldn't have done that when I was so overweight.  For one, I would have been embarrassed to be seen in a bathing suit.  For another thing, there were weight limits on some of the water slides.  I would have been heavy to go on them.

I go out with my friends, and I don't just sit there waiting to go home because I can't have the type of fun they're having.  I pretty much do have the type of fun my friends have.  I mean, I can't eat as much as they can now, but that doesn't mean I have less fun.  I enjoy the food I do eat, and I enjoy the conversation, and I have fun.  I can't drink a lot, but I never was a big drinker anyway, and neither are my friends.  I can have one drink if I want to, which is plenty.  Mostly I skip it.  But if you want to drink a lot and stuff, you might want to put off having surgery.

Topic: RE: GASTRIC BYPASS GONE WRONG
I had Gastric Bypass Ruen Y surgery 6 years ago and have had nothing but problems ever since. I weighed 360 lbs at the time of my surgery and now weigh 150 and am 5'10. I have gotten as low as 125 and with the extra fat and skin my actual body weight was probably around 95 lbs and my friends and family are extremely worried. About 6 months after my surgery I was hospitalized and went from a size 26 to a size 20 in a hospital bed. I suffer from extremely bad ulcers. I am hospitalized atleast 2x per year. I take carafate and protonix daily. But due to the recent economy I no longer have health insurance. I throw up quite often...no rhyme or reason. I try to follow the specific diet and do as I am told. I try home remedies health food stores etc.. Now my teeth are breaking off..left and right due to the acid, I eat tums drink maalox etc... It has ruined my life!! I am in constant pain.. There is no need to try to describe it to anyone because if you havent felt it you just could not Imagine. It is excruciating and often sit and debate with myself whether it is time to return to the emergency room which I cant pay for due to no insurance and have even more against my credit. Now what do I do with my teeth, cant afford that either... I am not a speaker for gastric bypass...at all.. I had seen others who had it done and had been fat and teased all my life I just wanted to be thin...pretty.. But no teeth and a nice figure??????and in constant pain.. No life, depressed about how bad I feel and when will it ever go away or what do I do if it doesnt. I am 40 years old and feel as though my life is already over. Doctors cannot explain or figure out why the ulcers are so bad and will not go away. If you have not had any of this...Thank god. Please dont keep going under the knife for the quick fix.. Enjoy being able to get up and walk without doubling over. Enjoy being able to eat a raw carrot without teeth breaking off when you chew. If I could do it again I would have put down the fork and joined a gym. I know we all think its not because of the way we eat or how much we eat...but we all no that it is...!!! Dont take it for granted.. Love yourself and you will find others who will love you no matter the size. Find a support group that wants to help you be a HEALTHY you no matter what size. Be happy and healthy.

Topic: Health Tracker Update: Meals and Reports

Last week we released two major updates. First was the public release of OH Groups where any ObesityHelp member can now create their own Group. Second was the addition of Activity Tracking to Health Tracker, which provides a robust and easy to use tool to track and monitor your exercise and activity. Today we have added My Meals and an Activity vs. Weight Loss Report to Health Tracker.

My Meals

My Meals allows you to group and store multiple food and beverage items as a custom meal that can be used over and over again. If you have meals that you eat on a regular basis, you will no longer need to log each food item individually.

To access My Meals, go to your Health Tracker in My OH and click on the Nutrition tab. You will see My Meals listed under Nutrition.
Creating a new meal works similar to your Food Log. You can search for food items on the right and add the foods to the meal on the left. A Calorie Breakdown chart and Nutrient Summary Label are also available for each meal.

Once a meal is created you can add that meal to your Food Log from My Meals by clicking "i had this" or you can search for the meal from your Food Log.
When searching for a meal to add to your Food Log, all meals will be returned when "My Foods" is selected in search. So, to "drill down" on meals that you have created, select to only show "My Foods." When a new meal is created it may require up to 30 minutes for that meal to be indexed and become searchable.

Activity vs. Weight Loss Report

Adding to the Macronutrient and Export Reports previously available, there is now an Activity vs. Weight Loss Report. This report will allow to compare Average Time in Activity vs Weight over time, providing you with further insight into what impact physical activity as on weight loss and weight loss maintenance. In Health Tracker, click Reports and then select Activity vs. Weight Loss.

We hope these additions to Health Track reduce the time required to log your daily food intake and makes it easier to view how physical activity impacts your weight.

Create your first meal now!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about this release, please post them on the Main Message Board.

well... the interesting thing is that i feel like i can have MORE fun now that i've had the surgery and lost (a lot of) the weight!!!  i can go to sporting events and concerts and clubs and the shore and amusement parks without having to worry that i'm not going to fit, or will be out of breath or will be sweating like a pig from dancing (i get REALLY cold these days!!!).  some doctors tell you you can drink and some doctors tell you you can't drink and i don't necessarily believe that drinking = having fun (don't get me wrong-- i certainly believe in having an adult beverage from time to time but it isn't the only "fun thing" out there).

as far as "missing" foods is concerned.... well, sometimes i DO think to myself "gosh i really loved such and such food" when it's in front of me.  and once in a while i will take a bite of someone's dessert or chicken parm or something.  but i won't buy it or cook it or keep it anywhere near where i could have access to it.  there are a lot of healthy alternatives and when you REALLY want to change the way you live and how your body looks and feels and works you will savor those alternatives and be grateful for them.

but if you really feel like you have a need to "sow your wild oats" (with food and drink), maybe it is NOT the time to have surgery.  i think i was in such a state about 3 or 4 years ago where i was not ready.  last year i decided, "i am so fed up with being fat-- NO MORE!!!  I AM DONE!!!"  hopefully i'll be able to continue a healthy lifestyle.

best of luck in your journey.

Topic: RE: RNY reversal
Hi all, If you are so new to the gastric bypass family, I urge you to just give it a few months.  I know its really tough, but those first few months are worth the effort.  I am on this conversation because I was looking for reversal discussions and info.  I am 6 years post g/bypass and have lost 135 lbs.  I too went through the newbee hell, but you too will make it through.  I had not only the terrible feeling in my stomache and lack of energy from so little calories going in.  I hated the protein shakes and diet food.  My memory and other cognitive problems were issues for about 4 months.  I had to have others review my written work before submitting as I had trouble with writing and staying on task.  Eventually I was able to eat normal food again.

About 9 months ago I developed ulcers and although they have resolved with medication, the nausea and vomiting with anything more than liquids continues.  I have had rounds with TPN (total protein nutrition through a central line in my chest), and now my surgeon is strongly suggesting reversal as my overall health is reliant on the protein through a tube.  Reveral is only done if your health is at risk - basicallly is there a chance you could die if you don't have it reversed.  The reversal is much more traumatic to your body with additional surgical risks, and even after reversal, your digestive system may not go back to normal.  It is only looked at in extreme cases.

So after all this, those of you who are only a few weeks out, please give it a chance.  Call your doc is you have problems, they are used to the questions and feel free to ask other patients on this site, they are a wonderful resource.  Take care, you are in my prayers.
