Of greatest concern are the effects of long-term nutritional deficiencies, which are rarely discussed realistically. The neurological decline and aging seen after bariatric surgeries is especially rapid and results from multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies, said Dr. Ernsberger. Both the stomach and small intestines are critical for absorbing many nutrients, including B-vitamins, calcium, iron, vitamin D and protein. Even taking supplements in multiple times the recommended amounts doesn’t help because the surgeries eliminate the proper function of the stomach and gastrointestinal system, he said. Hence, malnutrition problems are not uncommon, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and include anemias, osteoporosis, loss of teeth, blindness and, in a reported 16% of cases, even neurological and brain damage. We are seeing the return of nutritional deficiency diseases of starvation in formerly healthy fat people that had become rare in Western societies and are typically only seen in underdeveloped regions of the world.

Does anyone else take issue with this the way I did?? As a former fat person, and as someone who has a family full of currently fat people I can say with absolute certainty that there are ZERO HEALTHY fat people...it's just not possible. So that statement right there pretty much makes me question the reliability of the source that produced this information...
come on..."formerly HEALTHY fat people"???????

Sorry it took me this long to respong... lots of things happening at the same time.
I had my labs done and everything is normal. I am healthy, just weigh 100 pounds. My surgeon says that I'm a success story, not to complain... but I would like to gain some 10 pounds. I feel fine, really I do, but my family make me nervous! How are you feeling?? Have you had a blood check recently?? Have you lost any more?? I too, eat like crazy but I stay at 100. Sometimes I dip to 98! But 100 for the most part. But I have to work at it. I like smoothies and fruit quite a lot so that's one happy way to oblige.... :o)

I truly don't want to sound harsh, I am very much a realist. With that said. I honestly think that you are feeling that you want to live your childhood/teen years/young adulthood. You had children early. You haven't had any time for you...I totally get that! I don't think that is weight related, for the most part.
I think you need to re-assess your reasons for wanting surgery. I don't regret it one bit. I think it was the best decision I have made, simply because I want to be here for my children! I need to be healthy for them. Don't get me wrong, I always make time for me! You can't be there for them if you are not well yourself. The party scene is just not a reason to have surgery. And it can lead to bigger problem if you have a transfer addiction. Read up on that a little. Many WLS patients transfer their food addiction to something else like drinking. I have heard of two horrible instances of drinking after surgery.
Good luck with your decision. Take care of yourself. You will LOVE your new self if you are approved and go through with surgery. But be careful too!

Here's how I understand it. In California, if your policy allows weight loss surgery, your physician can write to the company explaining why this particular surgery (and not the others) is the one that will be best for YOU and YOUR health condition. They might deny the first time, then you appeal.
It worked for me. Best luck to you. I hope you can convince them!

Hi Evelyn,

Topic: RE: Nauseous
Hi i had my RNy surgery back in May 2009. I have had a ton of issues with the nausea and vomiting.. I was in the hospital 2times because of it. The dr put me on Zofran in the hospital and reglan once i got home. I am now on prilosec and reglan indefinitly... So if you are having problems, see if your dr can try reglan and prilosec combo..works for me... also there is another drug called phenergan and compazine (which come in pills and ~sounds gross~ suppossitories if need be). I have phenergan in my fridge as a back up..
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your post. I am glad to hear I am not alone! I am 7 1/2 months post op and only 5 lbs away from my "goal" weight ( I now know was a joke). Just 45 days after my surgery, my husband and I moved to a small village in Hungary which brought a great deal of stress into my life. Needless to say I have not had regular follow-up visits with my surgeon and finding a doctor in Hungary that deals with bariatric patients is almost impossible. For the past month I have been feeling extremely tired and dizzy all the time. Last week I visited my family doctor in Budapest and was told I have lost TOO much weight way too quickly, causing my blood pressure to average around 72 / 47.
I don't know if others experienced this but although I was seeing the results on the scale, I did not see a difference when I looked in the mirror. I still saw myself as weighing 242 lbs. I took a long look in the mirror the other day and noticed that you can see all my bones.....spine, ribs, hips all sticking out like a person that has been starved. It really scared me. I have been eating like crazy over the past week and have actually lost half a pound. On the advice of my doctor, I have stopped my work outs and have added more carbs to my diet. On one hand I am afraid to gain back too much weight and on the other hand I want to be healthy.

Topic: Nauseous
Today was probably the worst day of nauseousness and sickness I have ever experienced, I have been trying to have my protien shakes but I am so nauseous all the time I can't get them down. In fact I can hardly get anything down that doesn't have a good smell to it, I don't know if this is just me but I have noticed that my smell senses have been heightend, and like I said if it doesn't smell good I can't eat it, and I get really sick.
Does anyone have any suggestions because if this doesn't stop I may have to drop out of School and move back home.
Even if you were to tell me how long nauseousness lasted for you.

Topic: RE: Regretting the DS
When I was exploring surgery, I talked to my family doctor first; turns out he had just lost a patient who had the DS who could not stop losing. Guy died about 6 mos after his surgery; my doc said the guy just couldn't absorb enough to keep himself alive. Scared the heck out of me! Good luck to your sister in getting this fixed soon.

Ummm, I had terrible GERD pre-op. I still have it but it is improved to the point that I only take 1 PPI instead of 2 and sometimes skip a day. I will be 5 years out in June so we will see what happens.
I am sorry to hear of your troubles.
