Yes, there really is a true list and it is on DSFacts.com.  Those are the only surgeons I personally would go to for DS.

It's as comprehensive as it gets.

Something else you might want to think about -- at 28 you should be thinking about "getting over" the alcohol thing.  I live in Pittsburgh and we have been surrounded by news of Ben Roethlisberger...he is the same age as you and you see what has happened to him because of alcohol. I know as a younger woman I dated a guy who was 28 and still had a "thing" for alcohol and it really concerned me. Needless to say we did not remain together. You will be happier and healthier without alcohol if you stop now. You might want to consider going to an AA meeting since you say you are addicted to the feeling you get from alcohol. You will learn a lot.  Alcohol is not a friend...it's a drug. Some people can handle it while others can't. You need to be honest with yourself about which category you fall into and react accordingly.  Good luck.

Topic: RE: Why we overeat...

I agree wholeheartedly!

I had the lapband put in about 3 years ago, lost a decent amount of weight, was doing so well - then I had to have the band removed.  I've been able to maintain my loss - but I never worked out any of the underlying issues.  They've just manifested themselves into other addictions (and food is still my favorite addiction).

If I had to do it all over again, I still would've made the same decision...I was desperate.  But I now realize how much it's the underlying issues that matter, and how hard it is to fix those, even though most of the weight is gone!

Hugs,

Kristen

Topic: RE: Anyone 3+ yrs post op? I want to hear about any complications
Hi there to reply to your post regarding complications, I am almost 4yrs post RNY surgery, and delighted with my results, my only issue has been kidney stones, I am apparently a prolific stone former since my surgery, I've has 5 since Mar 07 (my surgery was Sep 06).  Due to the way my body metabolizes calcium oxalate I've been told. So I try to follow not only the bariatric eating plan, but it often conflicts with the Kidney Stone diet!  I'm still grateful that I had the surgery despite the stones.

Neither.

There are two other choices you should research as well---the Sleeve/VSG, and the Duodenal Switch/DS. Both leave you with a much smaller yet still fully-functional stomach, not a pouch with a stoma. The Sleeve is a restriction-only surgery like the Band, while the DS also has malabsorption, like the RNY (only permanent.)

Depending on how much weight you have to lose, either of these should be an excellent choice. The DS has the very BEST long-term, maintained weight loss AND resolution or prevention of co-morbs like diabetes and high cholesterol. The DS also has the very most liberal post-op eating plan.

I chose the DS because it offered me the very best hope of losing and keeping off enough weight to be healthy and happy. I knew I'd always need to take NSAIDs (no-nos after either the RNY or the Band), and I didn't want dumping syndrome or any of the other problems associated with having a stoma.

At nearly seven years post-op, I'm effortlessly maintaining my lowest adult weight ever, and eating 2500-3000 tasty calories every day!

You should probably post this on the RNY and lapband forums where you will get more feedback.

I know that it is a personal choice, but I would love to hear from you: Which WLS  you did and why you choose this surgery type. I am a newbie and have my first appointment on 09/22, sometime I want to do the RNY and other time I want to do the Lapband. I am sooooo confused! I research day and night ! but I am also exicited. Please help!!!!!!!! Thank you

I am have the same issues and feeling. Except I haven't thrown up once until today. My sence of smell is like when I was pregnant. I am on a anti nausea meds but it doesn't seem to work most of the time. I think it's just keeping me from throwing up. Today I tried a chewable protein tablet and experience 10 min of dry heaving. I'm starting to get worried because I'm not only getting protein in but not getting liquids in general in or food.  I stopped taking my anti acid last week & I started again today. I'm hoping that will change everything. I am worried I made the wrong decision. I did this because I wanted to have a longer life for my son but I'm worried I just messed up my body worse then it was before. I am also almost 2 months out and only has lost 35 pds.

I just want to say I think you look handsome and like the kind of guy people would want for a friend.  Forgive me if this is not a welcome suggestion, but maybe you are discovering that you don't have the right group of friends for your self.  I know there are lots of young people's church groups that would love to have you and you might just be surprised at the different kind of friendships and how you might fit in and become more true to who you really are.
