Topic: RE: I am scared to death - looking for guidance....
Hi Karen! I had been researching this surgery for 8 years! Being a nurse who took care of post-op RNY's at my local hospital was enough to scare me for a long time! Everytime I failed at another diet, I came back to thinking about WLS and gathered more info. I found that counselling had really helped prepare me for my decision and surgery. Anyway, I'm still in Mexico, had my lap RNY on 6/3/05 and am doing great! I've already got to get off of my 3 diabetes meds because my blood sugars are now normal. I've also lost 17 pounds in 6 days. I don't care if I lose anymore weight, I just wanted to have diabetes under control and avoid the complications from it. I want to live a long time! I wish you all the best in your journey! Bonnie

Lady, From a Pre-Op'er THANK YOU !! I am new to this site & have read the good, the bad & well the ugly from so many. I cannot & will NOT ever dare to put myself in a Post-Op's shoes, I have not traveled down that road so it is not right for me too. Just in the same, I have had 2 back surgeries & and can relate to someone who has never traveled that path trying to feed me trash. They tried to tell me all sorts of horror stories about "people" they know or heard of & NOTHING, NOT ONE STORY was ever good. I went on with the surgeries & even after a whooping 14 wks flat of my back in bed & just now 6 mons out starting rehab, I would NEVER second guess doing it again. The best move of my life. I also wanted to tell you the post you wrote about Today I will make a difference, well it touched me so much. I have read it & re-read it & it rings in my ears. I LOVE IT !!! THANK YOU !!! Beautiful words to live by ! Thank You again, Julie

I need your advice because I'm "going for" the lap band. I live in Nevada and am seriously thinking of going to California to get the surgery. What about aftercare? What do you think?

Hi Rosie! You sound like a very beautiful person. What works for me is going shopping --- looking at something beautiful. Or looking at beautiful clothes in magazines and "pretend" planning a wardrobe. I bet you'll look FANTASTIC! Joan

Not only have I NOT gained ANY weight back but at 2.5 yrs out I STARTED to lose weight again. Not all RNY patients have that bounce back weight. And unless you are eating huge amounts of food ALL THE TIME (which is almost impossible because you'd throw up more than likely) the pouch will not stretch out like it was preop. There is not enough stomach left to do so. I really have issues when people post information and say that it is a fact...especially if they don't have that particular surgery. Thanks Lisa, But you said that you started to feel that you were always hungry around your 6month and I started to feel it during my 2nd-3rd week out. But I think I'm getting better now that I'm able to eat different type of foods. I do listen to myself more, and I ask myself if I really need to eat again? It seems that I need that "Hand to Mouth Motion" So I buy Sunflower seeds.I know that I'm not suppose to have alot of salt, but I crave the seeds.I thank you for your info and I know that it will get easier. Hugs & 's Rosie

Topic: RE: ANOREXIA...
I've heard that obeisty and anoxeria are 2 faces of the same problem. I suggest that you see a therapist who deals with these types of issues. I go through spells where I won't eat even though my present BMI is over 60; for me it is always a control issue. Short of tieing you down with an IV no one can make you eat and no one can make you stop eating. It can be the only thing that one can control in a life that is in other ways out of control. There are probably as many reasons to not eat as there are people and that is why I really suggest the therapist. Keep trying until you find one you are comfortable talking with as not all therapists are right for all people.

Hi Rosie, I know how you feel. I had surgery on 99/04 and started at 258 and am now at 158. I got the hunger around my 6th month. It has not stopped. This is part of our disorder and how we got so large. This is something you are going to have to mentally conquer. I have tried drinking water when I start to feel hunger and I have just gotten done my meal a hour before. I am trying to talk myself into the fact that I just ate and it is not hunger pains. I also choose fruit and low calorie foods. You are on the right track; this is where we have a uphill battle. It can be won just by the choices in food. It will get easier as time goes on. I can now handle it better than before and I am up to eating 1 cup of food and am not at my year. So, I have stretched a bit, but I know that I will not go any further. I stop myself and have actually thrown food out!!! I have never done it before in my life...but I am actually enjoyed shopping for size 10 clothes. I had great weight loss in the beginning but have slowed down a great deal, to maybe 3 to 5 pounds a month. Keep up what you are doing, and start to listen to you realize mentally when you have had enough and how long ago. I try to eat something at least every 2 hours and stay satisfied. Good luck, and hang in there. It will get easier. Lisa
