I actually just went for my annual yesterday (7/6/05) and my Dr. told me to watch for a period that last more than seven days or if you go through a pad an hour. She suggested to me that if periods become irregular, they may put you on some type of birth control to help regulate them. Hope all turns out well. Gayle

I 100% agree with Bonnie D. I too am a nurse and I have taken care of probably 100's of pt's post-op wls. I have just a couple of things to say after reading all of that...Fills should ONLY be scheduled if you NEED it, and if you are vomiting and can't keep soft foods down...you don't need a fill. THERE IS NOT A PERSON ON THIS WEB SITE THAT WAS FORCED TO EAT...WE ALL DECIDED TO PUT THE FOOD IN OUR MOUTHS THAT MADE US THIS WAY!! I never accidently ate 6 cookies..or 3 pieces of chicken...lol. I know that there are underlying issues, we all have them and I truely wish I could just reach into the depths of all our souls and remove whatever pain we have that causes us to over eat. But the honest truth is...we ALL want to over eat. Our wls is just a tool, not a cure, and I think that is what some people are looking for. My last comment is for those people who have not decided on a type of surgery...You MUST check out the bad too...look on this site for the memorial page BEFORE making any decisions. Everyone needs to know the worst case senerio, not just the best. It really makes me sad to feel the pain of a person that feels trapped by his/her weight. Good Luck to us all... How did your visit with your surgeon come out? I hope he was able to help you. Maybe you need some metabolic testing done before having another surgery. The question that immediately came to my mind is why did you wait 2 years before addressing the problem? If I had not lost at 2 months I'd be in his office demanding that something be done. Best of luck!

Topic: RE: Always HUNGRY!!!!!!
I know this post is a bit old but I had to respond when I read it. You had this surgery to get healthy, eating snacks is not the right answer. No wonder you are always hungry. Make yourself eat at least 3 times a day but eat the right foods and I think your hunger will disappear. I don't like to cook much since wls either, but I find if I cook pork chops, steak, ribs and package them in plastic containers that I will microwave them when it's meal time. I leave some in the refrigerator and freeze the rest to be taken out later. It doesn't matter if I'm not in the mood for protein, that's what it takes to keep me healthy. I use sauces when heating the meat like bar-b-que, A1 or Heines 57. It adds flavor to an otherwise dull meal. Sometimes on weekends I get lazy and eat almonds and diet coke for a meal. I find I'm always hungry when I do that and it would be so easy to revert to my old snacking ways. My surgeon says dense protein keeps us full between meals, he doesn't believe in protein shakes, bars, etc after six weeks. To be honest I find I do much better when I eat the dense protein. Example: Steak, pork chop, ribs are dense. Hamburger, chili, etc are not dense. I eat the non dense protein on occasion but the dense protein does keep me full longer. This is the best chance you will ever have to lose the weight and keep it off. The sad news is if you don't use your tool properly you will most likely either not lose or end up regaining the weight back. This is about more than having surgery, you are responsible for making it work by eating right and exercising. Best of luck! It's hard to give advise or input on your situation. Nothing in your profile says what weight you started at or where you are today. I will say looking at your pictures that you look a lot better. Yes you may still be overweight but you wouldn't stand out in a crowd since most people are overweight in today's society. The only person who knows how compliant you have been is you. If you were compliant and didn't lose weight you might just have to accept that you will never be thin. If you weren't compliant you know why you ended up where you are today and another surgery wouldn't fix the problem. My surgeon tells me I will be able to lose about 30 lbs when I have my plastic surgery. I am still in size 18 jeans but after plastic surgery I should be in a size 12-14 and I can live with it. I'm still struggling to lose the last 18 lbs before having plastic surgery. I've averaged about 5 lbs a month from months 12-17 so I think I can still reach my personal goal of 195. My surgeons goal for me was 215. My surgeon told me up front I'd never fit the insurance weight tables but that I'd feel and look better when I stopped losing. I have been very compliant, not taking in more than 30 grams of carbs a day, working out in the gym for 45 minutes 5 days a week, additional walking 4 nights a week in large stores, staying around 700 calories at 17 months. I'm not sure why I told you most of what's in the paragraph but maybe it will help you to compare where you are today. Some of us just won't ever be skinny. I'd die of starvation if I were anorexic and still be overweight. Best of luck to you. Pat Surgery 1/20/04 410/352/213/195 (less 30 more lbs when I have plastic surgery)

Unless there was rape---continuing from the last response. This could be a trick on her part. But, maybe not. You have to judge for yourself whether was a true occurance. This looks to me like this is NOT a first incidence. Should you tell the wife? My thou ghts are no. This is for the simple reason that she is a friend and you ma y form a wrong opinion about this. I would however, tell a minister or someone of that nature because of the sensitive issues involved. It is serious to cry rape, or child-molester or someone like that. i would lay off and see where the chips fall. If it hapens again, meet with the man and tell him you know everything and then tell him if he does this again you are taking his wife away (and kid as well) to live with you. If he goes crazy then you have a cop nearby. If he seems complacent, then repeat the same. However, you do need more facts before you do anything

Caryn, Your male friends behavior is a secondary issue to the fact that he beat up his wife and raped her!! She needs support and help with this issue first and foremost. Believe me, all the other stuff is irrelevant if this guy is violent toward his wife. She needs help and support. I would find out where the closest domestic violence program/rape crisis center is and try to connect her. This woman is a victim of a crime and needs your support. Lynne

Topic: RE: I am scared to death - looking for guidance....
Karen, I understand where you are coming from. Have you thought about the lap band instead of RNY. I was in your shoes and seriously scared of anything too major. While the lapband is slower and probably will not accomplish as much weight loss as a bypass, I am satisfied with a slow and steady progress. My regular physician, who wrote letters for my insurance approval, told me I probably could never lose 100 lbs. by myself. My history was to lose weight, not stick with it, and gain more than I lost. I knew I had to take a drastic measure but needed to do it less dramatically. My mind could not handle RNY, I knew it. My surgeons office is 90% bypasss ands that is the procedure they specialize in. So I am happy with my decision and just wanted to share with you a different point of view. You are the only one who can make a major decision like what to do. I am down 26 from April. Definately slower but I am satisfied with the progress as long as the needle on the scale moves downward instead of upward. I think anyone who makes any decision to undergo any of the options should be commended. It is not a magic pill, all options require dedication and work. Debbie

Hi DeAnne! If you could lose 115 pounds, you don't need a revision! Obvioulsy the RNY worked! I certainly would not list you as a WLS failure by any means! My only suggestion would be keeping a food journal, pulling out your post-op diet instructions and make sure you are following them to a T! I've met a lot of post-ops who weren't happy with their progress. It took a lot for them to realize that they'd slipped back into their old ways of eating and making some really bad food choices. Take a long hard look at your diet and exercise pattern, maybe there is room for improvement. The surgeon group I see here in New England has had only 2 or 3 people who actually needed revisions, all the others went back to the nutritionist and were re-trained in WLS post op eating. I looked at your profile and you look amazing! If you had a tummy tuck you would not be in plus sizes anymore! A friend of mine lost 3 sizes after her tummy tuck. There's alot of skin there, making you look bigger than you are, and the pants are really baggy on the legs. I wish you the best of luck and thank you for the inspiration! Bonnie
