Topic: RE: Mental health and surgery
I want to thank you all for your replies. They have been very helpful and comforting. I am now 4 1/2 weeks post op and feeling much better. I did not stop taking my anti depressant and last week went back to taking it whole. The taste of crushed pills just multipled the anguish i was already in. Put that behind me thank God! Taking baby steps.... I know it can only get better, it has to considering how low I was.

Topic: RE: Mental health and surgery
I have not had my surgery yet, but have done some experimenting with making food choice changes, and learning to do different things other than eat when stressed.
I have learned some coping mechanisms when I am upset. Journaling, prayer, meditation, listening to classical music, deep breathing are all positive nurturing things you can do for yourself to help you cope with the myriad of emotions you are experiencing right now. They all work for me.
Please do not stop taking your medications. Ask the prescribing doctor about liquid alternatives, or do as others suggest and get a pill cutter and make the pill pieces as small as possible.
Hang in there. Things will get better and look better soon.
Hugs,
Trish

Topic: RE: LapBand Regrets?????
One of the European surgeons I contacted regarding my revision from band to DS wrote back that fully 20% of his surgical practice was REMOVING LapBands and converting to other surgeries.
So, yes, they have been placing the band longer in Europe and they do a lot more bands in Europe, but they take them out sooner when they prove to be the wrong choice for the individual patient. Before I was banded, another European surgeon told me that he thought the band was where wls should START...and if/when if proved unsuccessful, another choice could be made.
The problem here, as I see, it that due to the cost and the insurance companies' involvement in the US, people who have bands that are not working for them--for any number of reasons--are encouranged to try harder and to "get back with the program," and to have slipping bands repositioned, and to try to live with band-caused reflux, and on and on...and often "blamed" for not doing their part, which is ridiculous.

I had my surgery two months before you, August 1, 2005, and at six months I had lost 80 lbs. like you, having stalled for a month or two, but then it started to fall off again. As of today I have lost 105 lbs. Your body is probably just adjusting itself to the sudden weight loss and it will start to come off again.
That being said, you should try to find some form of exercise that you enjoy -- it is not all going to the gym - I refuse to do that too! I found a friend to run/walk with, we run/walk around the neighborhood, the park, the beach, and talk up a storm - it's more like a therapy session in fresh air. Take tennis lessons, go hiking - try not to think of it as exercise, but rather entertainment.
I don't do the protein shakes or bars either, but do get required protein grams with "real food". I went on a quest for tasty very high protein low fat products, that I look forward to eating, so I'm not looking for that sugar fix (not to say that I don't treat myself occasionally).
As for the water, I only use the 16 oz bottles, because they are not so intimidating to start or finish. I have made it a habit to finish one bottle with the vitamins I take every morning, and then one with each calcium tablet I take during the day. I take 3 calcium tablets daily and they are not supposed to be taken together, so it kind of tricks me to get my water in.
Hope I'm not sounding too preachy, just sharing what works for me.
Good luck!

After much research, I chose the lap-band. I was prepared for the possibility of erosion, slippage, BP, vomitting, etc, and even death. What I was not prepared for was not being able to banded.
I wish they had REALLY made me aware of the possibility of waking up from surgery WITHOUT the lap-band (according to my DR due to abnormality in my anatomy for which they do not test pre-op) and that the scar tissue from the first aborted attempt at placing the lap-band would make the second attempt at surgery to place band unsuccessful.
2) I also was not prepared for the adverse reaction I had to the derma-bond (the surgical glue my surgeon uses to close wounds).
All things considered if I had the opition of trying to have a band palced a 3rd time, with a VIABLE possibilty of it being successfully placed, I would do it again.
Topic: RE: Ins Approved RNY-Regrets not Lapband?
I wanted to get a lap band. Less invasive, less expensive, adjustable, reversible.
One major issue I had was allergic to plastics/silicone. Can't have implants either with any PS I might have to have.
Had to have a plastic screw taken out of my foot 6 months after surgery. Surgeon said, No one has ever had to have this done. 6 month recovery for a 6 week recovery period. 3 days after screw taken out, my cast fell off from the swelling in my foot finally going down.
I love all my surgeons and doctors. Do they ever over or under state something?? Sure, they are just human beings. They have opinions. They get comfortable with one procedure or another.
Just do a lot of research and think outside the box. Worst case scenarios, best case scenarios. Can you live with either?? Then make your decision.
I'll have RNY. It'll help with sugar/carb addictions (hopefully). It will result in the weight loss I need to bring several co morbids a little bit more under control. I'm not (knock on wood) allergic to metal as I give myself 2 shots a day.
Does it mean I don't worry about the titanium staples. No I still worry. I'm just putting my faith in God and my surgeon. Sure can't go on the way I am right now.
By the way, malabsorption is already a problem I have with vitamins, B12, iron. So I'll still be taking the same supplements I take now and occassionally have a B12 shot like I do now.
Everyone is very individual. Their mind and body will make the decision clear for them when the time comes.
My $.02 worth.
Topic: RE: everyone is not a lapaband success story!!!!
Oh, God bless you! I am sending you a great, big HUG! I know about disappointment and devastation. I was banded on May 2 and at that time the doc put 1 cc in my band. I didn't really have what I would call restriction per se, not that I could really tell. I went for my first fill yesterday, all excited about getting started on this weight loss journey...and low and behold...I have a leak! Yes, a leak! He put in 3 cc and only 1 would come out. On fluoroscope when I swallowed the barrium...it zipped right down through my stomach like nobody's business! Now, where the leak is, we do not know. He says 90% of the time it is where the port connects to the tubing, but could be higher up [[[horrors]]]...so I have to go in for more surgery! Now he has taken even the 1 cc out and I can tell you...I must have had SOME restriction before and did not realize it, because I really have none now. So...only 1cc makes a huge difference. PLEASE...PLEASE either speak to your doctor about better fills, or seek out another WLS doctor who is more atuned to the band and what a fill really is and how hurtful and counterproductive NOT having the proper fill is. It is too soon to give up...please give it another try and please post and let us know how it goes! I have my "fix" on Wednesday...just hoping and praying I don't have to have the entire band replaced and start over at square one again. Good luck to you!
