Topic: Pre op diet
I am researching having WLS and am currently checking into the Lapband. Can you tell me what the pre op diet is and how long you have to be on it? I was thinking since my biggest problem is self control when it comes to eating would I even be able to get myself through the pre op diet? I know that sounds bad but lets face it - not being able to control myself is what got me to this place. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks. Kat

Topic: RE: DR. ORTIZ???
Prior to getting approved for RNY, I had planned on going to Dr. Ortiz. I have heard he is the best. I read his book and had even scheduled appt. My husband was against it but his mother and aunt went and it's been three years for them, they look wonderful and are doing great. Do research on Dr. Kuri also. Good luck.

Hi Cyndi I just read your post from pre op. How are you doing now post op? Have any of your fears materialized or is all going well? I am pre op, following an required insurance diet. I am to have the RNY in the fall about October or November. I too have been worried about the complications and gaining the weight back after having my insides surgicallly altered. I am an emotional eater and am working on this with a therapist. Hope all is going well for you. Karen

Hi Darla I can only commisurate with you. I too am unemployed and living off savings which are dwindling. My comorbidities are the primary reason for not working. I lost the last two jobs due to respiratory illnesses which made me miss too much work. My primary MD feels my immune system may be compromised by the fat as there is apparently literature supporting this theory. I hope you have found some help from a social service agency or something. Is there any chance a different surgery could get your surgery done faster or is it a function of insurance? I don't know what I would do myself if I get to that point as I have no one to turn to for help.My plan is to find a job after my surgery which is supposed to be in October or November after I complete an insurance required diet. I am divorced, not my idea and have no family to help. I know getting Social Security Disability is very hard and takes a long time, too. Best of luck and I am here if you want to communicate via email. Karen

Hi Jen I just read your post today. I recently read the OSSG gone wrong forum on Yahoo and found the complications really scary. I wonder if perhaps it is due to the type of surgery, the DS as opposed to the RNY. I am pre op, doing the required insurance diet till fall when my surgery date will be set. I find myself vacillating often even though my primary MD strongly feels I must have the RNY due to my comorbidities of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, hyerinsulinism(metabolic syndrome) and joint pain due to the excess weight. I looked for your profile but alas you do not have one. When is your surgery date, do you have one yet? Are you going forward with having it or not? Are you having the RNY? Would love to hear any thoughts or experiences you have at this point. Karen

If you are unable to work...call social security (if you have put into it) or even state disablity. I am sure you will qualify to get monies, don't wait as it takes some time for the application process (sometimes upto 90 days from the time you get all the paperwork in). Good luck.

Thank you so much for your post ! The links are very helpful and I'll check in with my sleep MD for a Rx for the "auto set" option. You're the best! Mary

Hi Mary, I'm just curious if you are at the right pressure and have a good mask fit. You should be at a pressure that is just high enough to keep your airway open. Have you thought about the APAP (auto-set)- the pressure is based on a breath-by-breath basis so you wouldn't be getting too much pressure. Check out this website: www.ResMed.com and www.myresmed.com. At myresmed.com you can ask questions and a nurse answers them. Hope this helps!

Have you tried to apply for any disability? I wish you the best.
