Topic: RE: SURGERY HORROR STORIES...
Before you have surgery, you should check the web and make sure your surgeon is board certified to do the surgery you select. You can also check with the state medical association to see if any suits have been filed against him/her.
I have had 15 major surgeries, the last being laproscopic RNY dec 9. I selected my surgeon because of his training, yearly updated bariatric training, and certifications. I drove 1 1/2 hours to get to him, and was happy with my results. I am down 108 lbs in 7 1/2 mo, and he was able to do it laproscopically, which was a challenge with a bmi of almost 56!! He is board certified in bariatric and laproscopic surgery, and belongs to ama, and sages( for gi laproscopic surgeries) many surgeons I checked out were not board certified in bariatric surgery, but were just surgeons. I only wanted someone with great credentials!
Topic: RE: Pre op diet
Since eating to right amounts is a problem for you, as it certainly was for me, I reccomend you reconsider the lap band and consider gastric bypass RNY. With the band your stomach is larger and you can eat more. Personally I NEED the restriction of the small stomach pouch. MY BIGGEST FEAR WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO COMPLY---EATING EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT HUNGRY, BUT SINCE MY SURGERY I HAVE DONE VERY WELL. At 7 1/2 mo post op I am down 108 lbs and from almost BMI 56 to 35.3. Sometimes I still fight my head, but I am sure that will take awhile yet.
I usually do not even feel hungry unless I have not eaten for over 3 1/2 hours or more.
FAT CAN DEPOSIT ON THE LIVER MAKING SURGERY A BIT MORE CHALLENGING, WHEN WE DIET THIS AREA IS ONE OF THE FIRST TO LOSE WEIGHT WHICH HELPS THE SURGEON. I LOST ABOUT 9 LBS BEFORE SURGERY AND IT WAS HARD BECAUSE IN MY HEAD I KEPT THINKING" I BETTER EAT CHOCOLATE WHILE I STILL CAN...ETC"
BUT I JUST PRAYED MY WAY THROUGH IT. YOU CAN DO FINE.

Have you considered trying to take in a renter?- that way your expenses would decrease and your money would last a little longer. Many young people just want out of the house and haven't much money themselves, so it might help you both.
CONTACT THE DEPT OF SOCIAL SERVICES DISABILITY OFFICE AND ASK THEIR ADVICE.
Topic: RE: CPAP use post op
I agree that there should be no problem if it is set at the correct pressure. FYI I was retested and 5 1/2 mo post-op I did not have sleep apnea anymore and did not have to use the CPAP at all. I am 7 1/2 mo post op now and down 108 lbs and 20 BMI PTS.
Maybe this will encourage you!

Darla - I applied for Social Security disability (Maryland) and was approved. The reason was a combination of morbid obesity and two bad knees (need knee replacements). Please apply - all they can say is no, and what if they say yes! The process didn't take too long - about 4 to 5 months, which I know is a lot longer than you have before money is gone. In the meantime, perhaps you can help from a local church group or other similar agency in your area. I wish you the very best of luck, and hope your surgery goes great. Take care.
Topic: RE: Post OP 5+ years and beyond.....A question from a newbie!
I had a proximal RNY 14 years ago. Lost from 310 to 240 and over the next 4 years I gained all my weight back and 10 extra pounds. I don't dump, but get low blood sugar if I eat simple carbs alone, shaky, weak, ravenously hungry. I have to give myself b12 shots once a month. I can't take NSAIDS. All those side effects and still 300lbs. Lost 65lbs two years ago and gained back 30 when I cut my exercise back from 2 hours a day to one. I am having a revision to DS in Sept.
I wish I knew when I had my RNY to stay away from carbs. That is the only thing that has helped me lose weight, ever! Yet life is full of carbs....
Topic: RE: LapBand Regrets?????
Rachel - you are so right to do this research.
I am a very happy lapband patient, just 7 weeks out, losing well and with excellent restriction. For the first time in my life, food has ceased to be at the centre of my life. I eat when I am genuinely hungry, not just because I see food! And a very small amount fills me.
I know that I am one of the lucky ones. I had an easy surgery, quick recovery, early restriction, excellent post-op care from the medical team. I think one of your other posters gave the right message when she said that she felt unsupported by her doctors and therefore was not a successful bandster. You need a doctor that understands and supports you.
I am sure you will have done all your research and mine is a biased view anyway, but for what it is worth - I never considered any other form of WLS (I did do research into bypass and other surgeries) because i was not prepared to take the higher risk of complication. You will see that some older studies do not find much difference in the complication rate but from my reading, it seemed that the difference was that the band complications were very rarely as serious. Having said that, many RNY patients are more overweight and may have poorer health BEFORE surgery so be more likely to have complciations anyway.
I wanted to be a "normal" person as far as food is concerned. I eat out with friends and eat WHAT they eat, just less of it. Unless someone peers at my plate all evening and counts my calories, no-one who does not know i am banded would realise there was anything different about me!
Whatever you decide - good luck, Kate
Topic: RE: DR. ORTIZ???
Hi Colleen,
I could go on all day singing Dr. Ortiz's praises....HE IS THE BEST!!!! I researched for over a year before I had the surgery and could NEVER find a negative word about him. Please read my profile and feel free to email me privately.
Hope this helps,
Stacy

Topic: SURGERY HORROR STORIES...
I am looking at E channel...plastic surgery horror stories...and they mentioned to WATCH OUT for a surgeon who NEVER performs surgery in a hospital...those who uses surgery centers or perform surgeries in their office may or many not be REALLY a surgeon..., I did not know that....they mention that sometimes a doctor can actually start practicing performing surgery without ANY surgery training period... I thought only a trained surgeon could perform surgery....
They also mention Hospitals will NOT allow privileges to a doctor to perform ANY procedures in a hospital without appropriate credentials and they MUST be board certified. Gee...there is NO way I would have surgery outside of hospital anyway....especially in a doctor's office...good grief...
So they mention be wary of doctors that NEVER perform surgery in a reputable hospital no matter how small the procedure...
Boy there were infection and plastic surgery nightmares....any way I just thought I would share...it is gone off now, but I am sure they will re air this soon...
