I hear what you're saying about being somewhat disappointed. No matter how much research and information I got, I still wanted this surgery to be magic. It isn't . It's hard work and I must admit once or twice I thought, "I should have gotten a different type of surgery." But, I love the fact that I am still in control of my weightloss. Right, wrong or indifferent, I'm glad I can feel proud of every damn pound I lose! Good luck, sweetie. And keep your chin up!

So thanks for all the emails and words of ENCOURAGEMENT! It's really amazing! To some extent I think we all read the downsides to anything in life and figure oh, that won't be me, and then when it is it sucks. I still didn't know, as stated in the original post, that it would be this long to get the ball rolling, but I figured some of it would just melt away. So now that I have really started exercising, even since the date of the original post, the scale has been moving ever so slowly. That's all I ever really wanted, just to get it rolling. The best motivation for doing something you would rather not be doing (like exercising) is to see results, and the only validation you need that this wasn't a mistake is when you do see the scale going down. Thanks to everyone for the kind words!

Wow...that previous response to your post was a bit brutal. Keep your head up and shake those haters off

Hi Steph, I am like you. I researched every nite for 7 months prior to surgery (which I had August 1st). I also was surprised that during this healing phase while waiting for the 1st fill I will not loose wt..and I'm lucky if I do. I don't know if I just didnt notice this information because I was so thrilled about the whole surgery or what. It doesn't matter. I feel like they should have made it very clear at the lectures that I went to that this was the case. Then at least I would have been prepared emotionally.
What I don't understand is .....I am eating what the dietician recomends at this phase which is under 1.000 calories easy. I am also exericising daily. So why isn't the weight coming off ??? In the past before surgery if I did this I would be loosing weight with no problem? Is it because I was on a liquid diet for 3 wks and now my body is hanging on to every morsel of food thinking that it is not going to get anymore??? I would appreciate any responses on this.
I am not sorry for having the surgery by no means. I feel FREE and content with myself that I am not binging. That is a blessing in itself. Hang in there,,and happy journeying!

Teresa,
Thanks so much for sharing your story. I really needed to read that. I was just approved on 08/15/06 and my surgery is scheduled for 09/05/06.
I can't sleep at all with the worry. So I came to this particular forum to read horror stories. What I got was a heartfelt story from you sharing your journey.
Thanks for taking the time to share. I really needed this tonight.

This is going to be the wrong advice for some - so please don't listen if your surgeon has you doing something different.
I reintroduced carbs to be diet about a month ago. Once I did, I noticed a huge increase in energy again. I'm now getting in 1carb for every 2protein. Usually something like 30carbs and 60protien a day. This has helped SO much. I work out 2-3 hours a day so I need the carbs and energy to get me through.

Stephanie I am sorry to hear you have gone through what you have. I did not have Lap Band but know plenty of people via my surgeon that did. he requires them to attend like 5 classes and 2 support groups prior to surgery t understand their new tool they are about to get. He keeps all his patients so well informed it is not even funny. I am sorry you did not have this experience.
I wish you the best, keep up the hard work it will work, just takes time!

Hi Stephanie - I know exactly how you feel - although I did read that it was an average of 1 to 2 pounds a week and I did read it was slow - but none-the-less I still get frustrated and impatient over the process - I went into the hospital full of hope - I'm not saying I've lost my hope, but it is kind of a let down in some way - but I'm staying the course. I've lost 20 pounds in 5 months - that's perfectly in alignment with the 1 pound a week average - UGHH - I should be happier about it - but to be perfectly honest - I'm wearing all the same clothes and people I haven't seen in 5 or 6 months don't notice the loss at all - I'm actually down 42 pounds since last year and people I haven't seen in a year don't notice! But ultimately I didn't get the surgery to be noticed, I did it to be healthy and if my fate is to trudge along at 1 pound a week - then so be it, it is what it is..........Another thing that I noticed is the word AVERAGE is really important to pay attention to because I've lost 5 pounds in one week but then have gone 4 without losing anything - so it averages out to the 1 pound a week - when I do have a nice drop like that I get psyched and think maybe I'm on a quicker trend - but my body says - woe - I just lost some weight here I better hang on to what I've got going (thank you very much - NOT)......Some people are just quicker at losing than others - a women I met at the surgeons office who had the lap band 3 months before me lost 87 pounds in 6 months!!! I am thrilled for her and can't believe how much quicker she lost than I did - I think she might have had restriction fresh out of surgery...............
Lets' hang tough together - so it's a 2 year journey - it's still a journey worth taking....
Best Regards,
Tammy
Topic: RE: Has anyone had neurological problems post op
Roni
I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I wish you the best of luck.
My mother had a tummy tuck and about 2 years later was having trouble lifting her foot to go upstairs. It was very slow moving but eventually she was unable to walk. She is now on a vent at home, only able to move from the neck up and a small amount of movement in her hands and fingers, but that is getting worse as well. We always thought there was a connection between the surgery and her ALS but I could never find anyone else who had these problems. I read a study online that showed patients who had obesity surgery were at some risk for developing neuro problems. They ranged from minor to wheelchair bound.
I hope this helps. It would be interesting to know just how many people out there share the same story.
