Vanessa,
First of all, it appears you have suffered a great deal with your band. I am not aware of your medical condition, but you mentioned in another post that you vomit daily with NO saline in your band, your symtoms sounds like a classic band slip. Honestly, if my band made me vomit daily with NO weight loss I would be really fuming as well.
That said, I don't feel you have to right to say and I quote " Bariatric procedures without the malabsorptive component WILL not render weight loss".
Funny you mention that because I have had my band a little over 10 months now and I have lost over 100 pounds. I RESEARCHED the LAP BAND fully before I decided whether this procedure was a good choice for me and my lifestyle, I could have had ANY weight loss procedure, my insurance would have paid 100 percent for either RNY, DS and Lap band. I chose lap band because it was less invasive and did not require any manipulation on my internal organs and I did not want to depend on B12 shots and take vitamins the rest of my life just to say alive.
THESE THINGS ARE WELL DOCUMENTED AND FOLKS NEED TO BE AWARE OF IT, ALSO IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED WITH THE LAP BAND WE HAVE TO MAKE A LIFESTYLE COMMITMENT TO CHANGE ARE DIETS AND EXERCISE..THE LAP BAND IS DESIGNED TO HELP IS STOP EATING...NOT STOP US FROM EATING...IF WE TRY TO USE OUR TOOLS TO COMPLETELY STOP US FROM EATING...WE WILL REGRET IT WITH COMPLICATIONS...
I am NOT saying that you abused your tool, but those do typically regret it, from JACKING UP THEIR FILL VOLUMES rather than using their band as a tool, they abuse it and the problems don't start happening until they are 1-2 years out when the heartburn/reflux and vomiting starts. Some folks maintain too tight fills for long periods of time and have to get their lap band completly emptied and/or removed from either a band slip or damaged esaphagus...
And you know what, my band could slip or I could have some other unforseen problem with my band down the road, but you know what I will not be on this regret forum bashing the band, I have done my research on it and I KNOW ALL THE RISKS OF A TOO TIGHT FILL and the eating rules with the lap band...AND BY THE WAY...THE LAP BAND DOES NOT MAKE YOU VOMIT ...I HAVE NOT DONE THIS NOT ONE DAY SINCE I HAVE HAD MY BAND, I AM ALMOST A YEAR OUT, I USE MY TOOL LIKE MY DOC INSTRUCTED ME..
Please ONLY post about YOUR JOURNEY and YOUR problems and don't just say the lap band don't work, because you obviously did NOT work your band.

My husband is 2 years out now. He's down 90 pounds, and very rarely throws up.

MAJOR SURGERY! It takes sooooooo much out of you! You WILL start to feel better - and stronger - as the healing process goes along.
I was a good three months post-op before I really started to feel my energy level coming back, and I was relatively active immediately following surgery.
Baby yourself as you heal. Make sure to get in as much protein as you can, since this helps with the healing process... also be sure to stay hydrated!
Best of luck to you and congratulations on your journey!

Dear Ms. C:
I could not have described the ongoing side effects of getting a Lap-Band any better!!! You have quite a way with words.
I have noticed through the years of "lurking" on OH, that many of the respondents are less than 1 year post op with the "wonderful" Lap-Band system.
Ideally I would like to read from post op patients from more than 5 years. Maybe they might be able to come up with several, but I doubt it. I think they just kind of went by the weigh-side.......sadly it just was not their body weight that went by the weigh-side!

Topic: RE: Could I be a failure???????????
My surgeon won't even weigh us at our 2 week check up because we don't lose weight that fast, I gained weight in the hospital. It is normal to have this fear, we all go through it, just hang in there you will be fine. I remember how you are feeling and here I sit almost 4 years later and I weigh 125 lbs (I was 325 when I started) .
I promise, if you are eating that little the weight has to come off it just takes time!!!

Sue,
That really was an unfortunate situation for you. I'm glad you got it all worked out and headed in the right direction.

Phyllis,
To each is own...I don't mind having a BMI of 33 and going to the toilet a few times every morning HALF as much as I minded having a banded BMI of 48 and having to barf up pints at a time of gobby, viscous, mucousy slime (that's what can happen when the brain interprets the presence any food going past the band as an obstructon)...in restaurant restrooms, on the WAY to the restrooms, in the parking lot, in the front yards of wherever my husband could find a place to pull over on the way home (we dine out quite often)...but I suppose other people might be right at home with all that puking.
Sorry to have assumed that everyone else would make the same choice.

Eating under 1000 calories can actually stall your weight loss, your body is thinking it's starved so it's hanging on until the last minute! Then exercise puts muscle on and muscle weighs more than fat!

Sue,
The exact phrasing is: "Unless you are on deaths door and will die in the next several months anyway, I see no reason for rny or any of the others just because they provide fast weight loss."
Notice that its says" I " This is my opinion. Based on my personal research and instincts. People can do anything they want with their bodies, but if I am advising anyone, this is my opinion. There are less drastic options. I just wouldn't want to have any malabsorbtive surgery done on me unless I were on deaths door to begin with. I realize that a lot of folks are very pleased with their decisions to have RNY or DS on any other WLS, it is a personal choice that comes with personal consequenses and or rewards.
This is all about personal choice and the risks one is willing to take based on their research and GUT feelings.
And of course opinions are like ******** everybody has one. I just don't want mine to be tied up in the bathroom any more than necessary.
