Topic: excess skin
i know this isnt what anybody wants to hear, but it's a concern of mine. i'm fat. i'm obese. etc. but i've been this way all my life! i'm sad about it, very depressed about it, and it's preventing me from living my life. but at the Same Time, i'm used to it! it's familiar to me, this fat stretched out body. it's all i know. it aint pretty. but i look at all the before and after pics on plastic surgery sites and it really scares me. yes yes yes, this surgery is about getting healthy.. but you can't tell me those size 4 or 6 or 8 jeans dont make you friekn happy. i'm really afraid that i'll get this surgery and turn into mounds of excess skin and not be able to fix it. i'm confident i can eat right and exercise. i've already started to do that, (again) but nobody knows if your skin is going to shrink u*****t. i'm not about being perfect. but i do have a sense of style and i am well manicured, even at my weight. i just wonder if anyone had the surgery and was more grossed out by their after body than their fat body? i have an appointment tomorrow to see if i can even get the surgery. i'm nervous. about being denied, about actually being able to get it. everything. i just dont want to regret it. i've done my research. and some of the stuff i've found out really worries me. i'm single, 25. i dont wanna look like a 70 year old bag of skin. i'm looking into open RNY by the way. thankyou

Topic: RE: Pre op diet
I was required to lose 5% of my total weight which was 15 lbs. I lost the first 8 to 9 lbs o.k. Surgery was approaching and decided to put the walking shoes on and the rest dropped off. As a result of walking before hand (30 mins) a day I felt stronger. 3 days prior to sugery my doctor put me on a liquid diet to clean me out...I'm sure that took off a few extra pounds as well. I like you thought this was an insurmountable task, but it worked out.

Topic: Sad! Not sure should of done this.
Im not sure if i did the right thing by having the surgery. I just had surgery week ago. LoL and im already having regrests. The weekend before i was freaking out that i might die and am i really doing the right thing. I think im fast healer. Because im feeling pretty good pain wise. But i thought after this surgery i would never be hungry agian. I am constantly hungry. Sometimes its head hungry and i crave foods i can no longer have. but i also don't feel satisfied either. I been following gudielines to the tee. But sometimes im so hungry. and i constantly taking in little sips. That i can't quench my thrist. I feel like if i hadn't had the surgery and i was feeling hungry all i do take a few gulps and then i would feel refreshed. And little something into my stomache like bannna or sandwich. nooo Im hungry and nothing i can do can quelch that. Not to metion my stomache to small. Not only that im concstantly tired...and horribley crabby. Which i know have nothing to do with the surgery and all to do that i proably taking 10 calories with bypassed intestines. not even that. With so little energy coming in little to go out which is making me grouchy. Please tell me things get normal after awhile. Does this get any better. Well the tiredness hunger go away. Well i get to eat normal again. A taco, sandwich. frenchfrie Do you think things will get better or is there any way to restore my stomache back to what it was before.

I will definately check that movie out, Robin. My surgeon never addressed any issues before surgery, such as hernia's, reflux, vitamin dependacy, depression, and other issues that could be and ARE real. The divorce was an extra bonus. I wish you well and happiness. Hugs and love, Marilyn

thank you Laurie, and you are probably right about divorce already being a seed in his mind, if so, I was blind to it. I have moved on, slowly and cautiously, and my memories are mostly good ones. Bitterness takes too much energy and I cannot be bitter or I could not offer anyone else the companionship that I need. Regardless of the 'real reason' of our marriage breakdown, I am trying to stay positive about weight loss and continue to be supportive to anyone that is considering it. I told my California cousin, "ironically here I am finally.. slim,.. single,.. blonde, and no prospects or retirement in sight." go figure .... I wish you well through your journey, you look great! Hugs and love, Marilyn

Debbie, I am sorry for what you are going through but no words can really make you feel better. I know you have seen your regular doc but have you been following up with your surgeon every year? If not you should make an appointment and get back to your program. Perhaps his dietician can help you with a plan. Your regular doc probably doesn't really understand your bodies needs. We can become very efficient. The beyond change newpaper has recently had info on how our fat cells respond after surgery. You might look up there site and see if the articles are available on line. I wish you the best, and please be careful with the ephedrine. Take care, Robin

Hi Marilyn, I do wish you the best and hope you do try the civic clubs. I have a senior friend 70's who husband won't go so she takes trips around the country with senior tour groups, she loves it. I know what you mean about the divorce rate... I am 43 and it is hard even at this age to find good men without baggage. I too would run as you did from the guy at e-harmony. I think most people just attibute the divorces after WLS to other issue and society as a whole. And yes I think for many when we find our voices and now look great many marriages change and can't survive. Dr. Phil actually had a pt that her husband was disgusted by the extra skin, this another issue that no one really acknowledges before surgery. As for divorce I remember when I started nursing school in the early 80's. We were told in orientation if we were married or had a SO we wouldn't when we were finished, they weren't kidding. Because of the stress, etc about 80% were divorced, separated or on their own again. I am not sure what this says for society. But I do wish you the best and hope you do find a great friend to share your life with. My favoriite movie is Must Love Dogs. If you haven't seen it check it out and you will know what I mean. It kinds of represents us. Take care, Robin

Hey Marilyn, You are BEAUTIFUL, and a new man will come your way. Maybe your husband leaving was in his mind before you had the surgery and your surgery was the excuse he needed to make his move. The divorce rate is so high in society, that I think the 80% has a LOT more to do with general society, not so much WLS issues. I have spoken with a lot of people who found their inner self and true self-worth post-op and have found their voice to stand up for themselves following years of abuse for being obese (even if just mental abuse.) I did get divorced within 1 year of my marriage, but it was the best thing I ever could have done for myself. I realized that I was a good person, being treated very wrongly. I didn't deserve what I was going through, neither did the kids. Did it hurt? Yes, have I healed now? Mostly...do I regret leaving him? No. I have a peace within my life and my children are so much happier now too...I love myself again, and in return, have been able to love again. You seem like a very grounded, intelligent, nice lady and someone will find you...when you are not looking. Being alone without someone is better then being lonely with someone. Hope that makes sense to you. Good luck!!!! Laurie

Hi Debbie, I am sorry to hear what you are going through. I wish I had the right words to make things right. I feel for you and really hope that someone is able to help you get back in the right direction. Do they think the surgery failed initially and that they should be doing a revision??? I might have taken that route...especially if you were anticipating a larger loss then you experienced... Good Luck!!!! Laurie
