Topic: RE: 7th surgery since Gastric Bypass 4 years ago!
I just wanted to tell you that the powder used to "prevent" adhesions rarely work. My surgeon has been a general surgeon for decades. He said that there has been no proven way to prevent adhesions and most abandoned that powder stuff. Some people are prone to adhesions and that's unfortunate. I've seen and know people that have had numerous surgeries from adhesions (from intestinal surgeries, hysterectomies, etc). I hope you don't continue to have those adhesions! It can be a side effect from any surgery or injury. I hope your hernia surgeries go well too. If you get one hernia, getting another is not unheard of... but hopefully they use a large patch to repair it and prevent another one! You might want to find out what kind of patch they will use (I assume from an incisional hernia?)... Feel better!

Topic: RE: Is my BMI to high for lap band??
My starting weight was 352 and BMI of 52. My BMI is 33 right now, and I weigh between 220-225 (depending on the day). I am 18 months post-op. This band has exceeded my expectations. My surgeon said this band is the key tool for volume eaters, and in my case it severely diminished my sweet tooth. This is the perfect tool for me! Good luck with your decision!

I've heard of people taking Ambien-CR having this happen to them, along with a bunch of other strange things. Ask your dr. about switching your sleeping medication to something like Lunesta if you are on Ambien-CR. Dee

Topic: RE: Waiting Again.........
Hi, I had the lapband in July of this year and have never been happier. I have lost over 50 lbs. since then. RNY was never an option for me as I'm a cardiac patient and have had 5-way-bypass surgery. My doctor wouldn't permit me to have RNY, and I will be forever thankful for that. I love my band, absolutely love it. I hope you soon get good news that you are a candidate for the band. Why not check out the lapband forum and become familiar with some of us. We are happy bandsters over there. Dee

Topic: RE: excess skin
Well, as you wrote, there's no predicting...but the real truth is that the excess skin isn't from WLS...it's from massive weight loss and anyone who'd have skin issues after surgery would have them if they lost via non-surgical methods. It's a byproduct of losing weight. So the only prevention is choosing not to lose weight. And I'm doubting that's what you're interested in... Nancy

Starting BMI was 57, lost 156 lbs. The band is especially good for volume eaters. And no, it's not like being on WW, but as with every type of WLS, you're required to make substantial lifestyle changes. You cannot eat the way you did pre-op as a WLS patient and still lose weight and keep it off. The focus is on a healthy balanced diet. Nancy

I have never been through that. But I just wanted to pass along this (((Hug))) I am sorry you had to experience this, I can only imagine your disapointment. Talk to your doctor again and see what he says about the lap band. Good lUck to you.

You have to consume at least 700-800 calories a day to lose weight. I know it may sound silly - but your body goes into a "caveman mode" - when you don't eat enough your body thinks its starving and actually stores fat. I went through a period of very little weight loss and was consuming 600 calores a day. My doctor told me to eat at least 800 calores - and the next week - I lost 5 lbs and have been losing fairly quickly since then. I am 5 months out and eat approximately 750 to 900 calories a day. I know other people who have had the same problem and it always comes back to the same thing - not eating enough!!! It's also very important to only eat 2-3 oz at a time because otherwise you will stretch your pouch - once you do that - you're sunk - because you will be able to consume more food and will not be as successful at losing. Best of luck -

Topic: RE: WLS regrets? yes and no.....
Hi Crys, I'm sorry that you too had to go thru all the hurt and anger that one has to go thru to gain confidence from a divorce, no matter what the reason. We seem to suck up our disappointment and try to begin all over and learn from our mistakes. I'm not so sure that weight was an issue, but I am not going to disect it over and over again. Yes I miss the old days, but mostly because I don't have anyone to share the new days with. I am more confident about my looks, and strutt my stuff too, which I did not have the confidence to do 6 years ago, but was happy and secure (?). I guess what I'm trying to say is "I've been on both sides of the road, fat and happy, skinny and lonely" and its all the same to me. I don't have the health issues I did, and as the proffessionals advise...I will now live longer....hmmmm. I admire and respect what WLS has to offer as a cure for some health concerns, but my son-in-law is a doctor and has clued me in on a lot of negatives too.(after the fact). For the ones that are considering surgery, it can be a great thing. Just be sure which side of the road you want to travel on. Thank you for your post, and my socks are still on my feet waiting to be knocked off Hugs and Love, Marilyn
