Topic: Regretting Choosing RNY...some days
As Jan is flying bye and I am at a lack of mobility now. I have been thinking, I have been questioning, was this worth it. Up until December, I would have said yes. In the past 30 days, I probably would have said no. I would definitly rethink choosing the original RNY surgeon I chose based on how I was treated recently. I had some pain issues last summer and this surgeon wasn't very effective in my care. I had no major symptoms except nausea and reflux pain during christmas. I wasn't even going to call the dr's office, because i HATE dealing with the surgeon who did my RNY. I decided to call because I was having difficulty eating and drinking. I did find out there's a second surgeon in the group and he was oncall during christmas weekend. So, on 12/26 suffered from an internal hernia in the petersen's space, which is the mesentary colon and removal of adhesions (endometrosis). I thought I was bouncing back from the surgery quickly. I was still suffering with nausea and pressure in my upper chest, however, the surgeon who did my origianl rny wasn't as helpful as he could have been. I went back and forth for 1 week before I was seen again. This time, I went through a day of testing and a week of being really sick. Then, last week, I had a second surgery, there were an assortment of things done at this surgery had a band of scar tissue removed from liver, from bowels, from pouch area, then revision to pouch area, revision to internal hernia, and intestional hernia repaired. I will pretty much allow the doc's to do anything, while I'm asleep. Being in the hospital two times in two weeks has worn me out. Discourging as it is, I'm still suffering with nausea and reflux burning in my throat. Currently, I am waiting for my refereal to the GI dr. I will most likely be having an endo scope next. The thing I would do differently is to have chosen a different surgeon. I don't like the care that I've received when I've contacted them and also during a previous encounter. The distance between where I live and where the dr is located has also become an issue. I'm fighting off letting this turn me blue. I"m laid up, bored, so ofcourse my mind is working over time, over and over. I have everything on hold again, waiting to see what's next. Thanks for reading. Jen 2/22/06 And a continued gripe, there were some people whom I thought were 'support' people on another board, and they just turned out to be typical, back stabbers. Why do I attract these types of people? If I wanted someone to be negative to me, I can find plenty of those people.

Topic: RE: LACK of Pre-op Education
I agree 100%. I think that to many people have this surgery without understanding fully what they are about to go through. Believe me I would have this again in a heart beat. My doctors were excellent about the complications that could happen, when I interviewed with my DX. He asked me what the worst thing that I thought could happen and corrected me when I didn't mention death. They stressed the importance of keeping up with the program, we are required to attend monthly support groups for the first year and then semi annual check ups for up to 5 years. but what I found out was that the support group is like going to an AA meeting. You state your name and mention the kind of surgery you had and maybe a word or two about yourself. It doesn't go into the hard emotional stuff. You may learn about journalling what you eat or how important vitamins are. I have been shocked into how hard the change in my appearance is. My relationships with just about everyone has changed in some way or another and the transfer of addictions is appalling-- luckily the shrink with my office has started small support group meetings, we have been able to accomplish so much more. Unfortunately I am the furthest out patient, I had mine 17 months ago- so I don't have anyone yet to let me know what to expect--- but hey thats why I come here.... again I would have the surgery in a heart beat, I have lost 125 pounds and have had very little problems. donna

Topic: Back Surgery
I've had two back surgeries already at 28! I am just wondering if anyone can tell me a little of what they experienced after RNY, who may have had spine problems such as degenerative disc disease. I am scared that my back will get worse and I will need a fusion.

Just saw you over there, didn't realise it was you!!! Hope things work out with your ins. I know that a lot of the VSG folks have been self-pay but hopefully that will change and the ins. folks will wise up. Priscilla

I have spent countless hours there, over 200 easy. And I have not seen anybody that is unhappy with thier VSG. That is why i posted it here. I thought maybe nobody wanted to be the only person in a group that wasn't happy. Actually I have spent time on all the different forums for each type of surgery and the VSG forum is the only one where everyone seems happy 99% of the time, and they are losing at an awesome rate as well. Congrats to your Daughter too.

Kudos to you for starting this up. I have a friend who is over 5 years out who switches between bulimia and anexoria. When I first went to my surgeon in Sept of 05 I researched on the internet and found nothing linking EDs to WLS. When I had my pre-op visit in June of 06 my surgeon gave me a paper and on the list of possible side effects of WLS was EDs. I think they are finally starting to look into this. Its my hope that they start looking at people harder pre-op and give more post-op support instead of leaving it up to people on their own. Good luck to you!

Hi Marc, Did you ask this on the VSG board? My daughter had her VSG over a year ago and is going great ( almost at goal of 100% excess weight loss) and I think that everyone on the VSG board is happy with their choice. One of the great things about the VSG is the lack of complications. Priscilla

Please check with your insurance regarding coverage. My company would pay for RNY or lapband, but considered the MGB to be experimental. jeannine

Donna.... Your post was not misleading in any way. *I* am the one that brought up the issue of fraud. You just stated the facts as you know 'em.
