You got the same kind of run around that I got.  Either I was eating too much or not eating enough or eating too much protein or not enough protein.  What I found out on my own is that my body chemistry works exactly the same as it did before the WLS.  What I mean by that is that the diets that didn't work for me before, still don't work for me and the ones that did work for me before, work even better after WLS.  The only diet that I was able to lose weight on before WLS was a low glycemic, low fat, low sodium diet which was doctor supervised.  It also required eating about 5-6 times per day but very small meals and snacks.  Well I am now doing Nutrisystem because it works on the same theory and I am losing weight each day now when I was at a complete standstill.  I also supplement with 2 very low carb protein shakes for an additional 60 grams of protein.  I substitute this in for my dairy and fruit requirement on NS.  I use unsweetened Soy milk in my shakes because I try to avoid dairy whenever possible.  Don't get discouraged.  You probably just don't fit the norm like I didn't and the doctors just don't know what to say.  I have my thyroid and everything else checked and they just could not figure out why my weight loss is way below the norm.  I have been accused of not eating they way the doctor instructed which was not the case.  Find out what works for you and go for it.  Just remember to make sure you get all of the required nutrients in for whatever you do.  Some people say do no carbs which absolutely did nothing for me except leave me feeling weak, tired and hungry.  I believe in a limited amount of good carbs (thus low glycemic vs. low carb).  My energy level is out of this world now and I am losing.

From all of the research that I did prior to weight loss surgery, there was a lot of emphasis on the fact that it is just a tool to help you follow a diet plan.  It took me a few years to finally admit that I needed this tool because my question was always if dieting is required, why go through the surgery.  I continued to try to diet to no avail so I finally broke down and had the surgery.  I continue to diet as I did before the surgery however I can stick to it because my stomach is smaller, I don't like fried foods anymore and my body dumps some of the calories. The biggest difference is that I have not gained back any weight.   I have lost 80 pound so far and have about 60 more to lose.  It is still a struggle to lose weight.    I actually started Nutrisystem which some WLS advocates may criticize me for but by supplementing with my protein shakes and fresh vegetables, the convenient meals are helping me to reach my goal.  Good luck to your wife and she is not alone.  Weight loss will always be something that we have to work at, the surgery just gives you a helping hand.  Tell your wife not to give up, just work on finding out how to best use the WLS tool for her.  Some people find that Weigh****chers work for them, others do South Beach.  South Beach, or any low glycemic diet works for me I just didn't have the time to prepare the meals therefore I do Nutrisystem which is also low glycemic.

Topic: RE: 5 yrs post op RNY.. WEIGHT GAIN.. wanting DS now
My doc recommended a lapband for me after having RNY 2 years ago. I went down 90 pounds in 8 months and stayed there foreever and in the last 5 months have gained 30.  I read somewhere on OH that if you eat sugars or carbs, then lapband is not the way to go. My doc said the other two options were not good ideas, being more fatal and loss of nutrition complications.  I have now about 70 pounds to get to my goal. Karen

AT FIRST SHE TOLD ME TO INCREASE MY PROTEIN, SO I DID THAT NOW SHE IS TELLING ME I AM PROBABLY GETTING TOO MANY CALORIES FROM THE PROTEIN SHAKES. IT IS JUS SO FRUSTRATING BECAUSE I AM TRYING SO HARD.  I DID HAVE MY THYROID CHECKED AND NOTHING IS WRONG THERE.  PEOPLE KEEP TELLING ME THAT BECAUSE I AM WORKING OUT 6 DAYS A WEEK THAT I AM GAINING MUSCLE. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HEAR THAT EITHER.  ANY WAY I WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED.  THANKS FOR THE CONCERN.

Hi, there... If you find that after a couple of years (or even a year and a half) you are still not losing, or possibly gaining, you might want to look into a revision.  It's not for everyone, but there are a few folks in the DS Forum who've had revisions from RNY or Lap-Band to the DS and have continued to lose.  That said, I would try everything before considering a revision, since the last thing you probably want to do is go back into surgery.  But, if you need to ask questions about revisions, there are folks in the DS Forum who can help. Good luck!

Topic: RE: LACK of Pre-op Education
Reading your post is making me feel really blessed that I live close to a wonderful bariatric facility.  I've attended a pre-op support group (and continue to continue attending that).  They also offer a post-op support group.  Then some of the people from that group have formed ANOTHER support group that meets at someone's home.   They also have a book study group.  I also just recently found out that they do regular sky-diving trips (of all things!), and they are going on a pilgrimage, or retreat, together yearly.   I believe that these things are key to optimum success.  They are a support network unlike any other, and I am so grateful that I can be a part of it.

Topic: RE: Here we go...another question from the newbie
I requested no post op pain meds because narcotics and anesthetics make me forget to breathe, and some times puke, but either on it's own is fine. I woke up with no pain at all!!!!!!!! shocked was all I could say! They did end up installing a self pump morphine drip which I never used, but the night nurse nailed me once so I would just go to sleep because I was walking the halls at 2am the night of my operation. LOL     I went med free for 2 days while in the hospital and did a lot of walking which was not a good thing in the end, Come Saturday night, (I went in Thursday morning) I had to ask for T3's. They gave me percs. I took a script for percocet home with me (50) and they lasted me 3 months.  I really had no pain at all, so depending on you try it with out.  Ps I started typing this before I looked at your surg date. So forgive me if you did it already.

Topic: RE: My misery
Bill, Take a quick read of this: I am not in the medical profession but I do a lot of research and reading. Some of problems that you mentioned are listed as resulting from a B12 deficiency such as the loose stools, seizure and depression.  You can get B12 from your doctor or actually in the liquid form from GNC. http://www.commonsenseorganics.co.nz/news/Winter%2006.pdf Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia The body requires only tiny amounts of this nutrient, so deficiencies are most frequently due to poor absorption. In order to absorb B12 there needs to be adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid, intrinsic factor and the enzyme trypsin in the stomach. The small intestine also needs to be functioning well, as this is where absorption occurs. A lack of intrinsic factor results in pernicious anemia. Because B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products, deficiencies are mostly seen in strict vegetarians. It can take many years of a low B12 intake for a deficiency to become apparent (the body’s B12 stores last up to 6 years), with the brain and nervous systems being affected first. Symptoms of severe B12 deficiency include: pallor, poor energy, shortness of breath, a sore red and swollen tongue, loose stools and heart and nervous system problems. Nervous system symptoms include numbness or tingling of the arms or legs, depression, mental confusion and loss of both vibration sense and deep tendon reflexes. In the elderly, B12 deficiency can contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Dietary sources of Vitamin B12 include: most meat and seafood, and possibly brewers yeast, nori, tempeh and miso. Supplemental forms include tablets, drops or injections. Sub-lingual tablets or drops of methylcobalamin (one form of B12) are best as they do not require intrinsic factor for absorption.

Bill, Sorry to hear that you are having so many problems but do not give up.  Even though the test appear normal is it possible that you have a B12 deficiency because seizures can result from this.  I would consider looking  at my intake of vitamins making sure that those and my mineral intake is above normal. I will keep you in my prayers.
