There are statistics available about weight regain. We can expect an average of 10 to 20% regain after the second year. Of course, that is an average which means some will regain more and some less. It is a combination of the individual's body (genetics, hormones, metabolism, etc.) and compliance. It sounds like your wife looked to wls as the solution rather than the tool. As someone who was obese most of her life, I have to say, I felt like the surgery is what allowed my body to work for me instead of against me when it came to dieting. Yes, I still have to count calories, proteins, carbs, etc. but now it works.
I am sorry for your wife (she probably has some feelings of guilt and failure when even the thing that is supposed to be the solution doesn't work for her). But it must be hard for you as well. I hope you both are able to find an okay place with all of this.

Hmmm. Sounds like you're well within the calorie ratio for RNY (people usually talk about an absolute max of 1200 calories daily). However, your diet is very low in protein. If you were to change what you're eating to aim for 60-70 grams of protein, from low fat protein sources, each day, it *might* make some difference in your weight loss.
I remain suspicious that you might have that super-efficient metabolism, though.
What kind of vitamin and supplement regimen are you on?

Thanks alot for replying. You know it is like my surgeon and nut are just too busy to answer any of my e-mails now. My surgeon says that he is going through alot right now, I'm not sure what that is but are they jus absoultely too busy to responsond to an e-mail. I am just fortunate enough where I am not gaining weight, just not loosing. My typical day of eating is a piece of wheat toast for breakfast along with an 8oz glass of skimm milt and maybe some strawberries. For lunch a small cheff salad and for dinner 6 small shrimp with 3 crackers and yougart for snack. I exercise alot just don't have an appetite for food. I really don't know what way I should be going since my nut won't answer my calls. I even e-mailed her my journal from fitday.com and she have not responded. I may consider the revision at this point I'm just not sure. Thanks for your concern and keep in touch.

Good for you for reaching out! It is something most folks hide, which is why there aren't more statistics or physicians who address this. My sis had WLS almost 2yrs ago and developed bulimia. None of us are entirely sure if she had it before the WLS or if it came after as she's not telling. She is in counseling with a nutritionist and a therapist both. As far as causes...I don't think the WLS is the cause, I suspect most folks have issues deeper than that, but then I'm not a professional.
It is sooo important for you to seek professional help. Your very life depends on it, and the lives of those who love you! I am in the pre-op stages of this, and that is one of he things I asked my center's folks about- the stats on EDs and WLS. They said they are just seeing it come to light now. Because patients come back for their appointments when they are doing well, they tend to se and record the data about all the success stories. If folks are struggling, sadly, they often don't want anyone to know and don't seek help.
Please please do. Best wishes on your quest!

Sonia what you need to ak your doctor for is 'an anti-emetic' . This is a drug that will lessen your chances of being sick after the operation Good luck on the day!

oh, she had all the stuff. i even went to a meeting or two with her. i read all her stuff. surgery, exercise, watch food intake. she didn't bother with the last two. it's her fault. i would remind her about those. then it came to nagging. then it was "i give up". now she complains that when she walks the dogs her pelvis hurts like it did before the surgery. we got a treadmill because she just had to have one. it would help. i think she has been on it maybe 5 times in the three months we have had it.
what do you do? lead by example? ok, been low carbing and / or watching the calorie thing. so far i have lost 25 lbs. her? hard to tell if any. i can'****ch her at work.
so what can one do? nothing.
Topic: RE: LACK of Pre-op Education
I have not recieved any pre-op patient education materials on WLS from my surgeon (my surgery is scheduled for May 30). I have a friend who helped set up the WLS surgery program at a different hospital and she got me their patient education materials and I feel much more prepared (as one can be pre-op). I plan to talk to my surgeon about this at my next appointment. I also happen to work at the corporate headquarters for the hospital system where I will have my surgery and also plan to talk to my supervisors about developing a system-wide standard program whi*****ludes patient education both pre and post-op.
If nothing else, my surgeon could have recommended WLS for Dummies (Yes! It really does exist!).
Have a Great Day!

Oh man, that blows :-(. My surgeon is AMAZING in his dedication to his patients; I call or email him or his wife (who is an RN and manages the practice) a couple times a month easy, sometimes even more often. I can't imagine not having that accessibility, it would drive me nuts. (Guess I'm spoiled huh? LOL)
Can you tell me a little more about what/how you're eating? I might be able to give you some input based on my many years of attempting to manage my diabetes. I'm no nutritionist, but I've sure had lots of classes and courses in DIET DIET DIET :-).
Y'know, it might also be possible that your body is mega efficient at clinging to every calorie, so that the RNY does not give you sufficient malabsorption to fight that effect. If you exhaust all the correct diet and exercise options, that would be my next thought. In that case, you might want to consider a revision to DS. Come pay us a visit on the DS board and ask about revisions from RNY. There are a number of folks there who can share their experiences. Also, on the site www.duodenalswitch.com there are a good number of folks who've had revisions and one lady in particular who is an absolute genius at helping people wade through all the complicated stuff that surrounds the whole preparation process, whether for a revision or a "virgin" procedure. Some people post on both sites so there's some overlap, but there are others that just stick to one site or the other.
Hang in there and don't give up hope!! It sounds like you don't have a heck of a lot of support in person, and that makes it tough. But that's where the Internet can be a godsend and a lifesaver :-).

Thank you very much for your input. You know the problem I am having now is it's like my surgeon's office don't want to have any thing to do with me now that the surgery is over. My nut won't even return my e-mails. I will try to figure this out on my own. The good thing is that I have not started gaining weight, I just can't find a solution for loosing. I will take your advice and see what happens. What do I have to loose? (smile) Thank you
