Topic: RE: LACK of Pre-op Education
I totally agree that pre-op ed is essential and am sorry to hear how little some of you have available, My surgeon requires 4 hours of classes in additon to the psych eval and two meetings with the nurse practioner. The hospital offers 5 support groups a month (lapband, pre and recent post-op, general bypass "is it normal", nutrition, and relapse/maintenence). They also provide a large book of required reading. I am scheduled for lap RNY 8/23/07 and have been attending the support groups regularly. All but the nutrition group are moderated by a therapist. I have found the pre/post op and relapse groups particularly enlightening. And of course, I have been all over the web and dropped a wad at Amazon. Having been all over the place (lapband, rny, am I crazy?) these supports groups have helped me feel more secure about my decision. Realizing many of you have limited surgical choices - but if you do, post-op support offered is critical, IMHO. BJ

Hi. I am having the DS with DR. Schweitzer in Balto. He is an excellent surgeon with amazing results as regards safe surgical outcomes. You owe it to yourself to investigate all the options. I thought I wanted te lapband too at first but after my research there is no question in my mind that that at the weight I am at DS is the way to go. Please check out my profile. I have tons of information and comparisons. Jo

I know I"m late to the conversation here, but I was at a similar place.  I went in for my initial consult planning on lapband - my surgeon does both - and came out feeling the RNY is right for me.  The reason is because my surgeon said that for people with BMI's over 50, the success rate with lap band is 20%... I am self pay, and i didn't want to spend that money on something that I would only have a 20% chance of succeeding with... also - my surgeon said with lapband success is defined as losing 40% of excess weight, whereas with RNY it's 60% or more. They said it was my call and they would do either one... but, my surgeon has done so many RNY's and his mortality and complication rate is actually the same as the lapband rate, so he's way below the national average for death/complications... that made me feel much better about it.  They also have tracked their patients and have been doing the RNY for years - so do have many patients who have kept the weight of with rny for over a decade.  I have read the boards where people regain after RNY - but i've also read a lot of success stories.  I was over at lapbandtalk.com reading too, and there were a lot of people who weren't losing with that.  So that's why i am having the RNY on July 30th.  I am also working on my food issues and love to work out - so am hopeful that I will be a success story -- but I also feel better knowing that if I am not, the stomaphyx procedure is starting now - which is an endoscopic procedure to reduce a pouch that has stretched after RNY.  A surgeon in my area is one of the few trained to do it.  I don't plan to ever need this - but it added another layer of comfort to my decision for me. Good luck in whatever you decide! Mary

If you cruise over to the board you will see some people striggling with stalls and feeling hungry. Some have considered revsions to DS because their weight loss is less than they'd expected. I don't know if we all have a natural set point that is hard to break, or if the surgery is just less effective for some people. I know that overall people seem very happy and have good results with low complications. The same is true for the lapband in my experience. Many peopl who had surgery around teh same time as me are almost to goal -- meanWhile I've struggled at lose even 1lb in the last 6 months. Every BODY is different.

Just to add my two cents,,,, Although some say other procedures are reversable,,,,,,just try and find a surgeon willing to reverse a RNY.  Even if you could,,,,,if you have no insurance, how would you ever pay for this? (Not you specifically,,,just 'you' in general).  As if WLS didn't come with enough risk on it's own, a revision doubles the risk,,,, What you are doing is important.  Lots of great posts here.  Research, research, research!!!!!

I have a band and love it.  I've lost almost all my weight relatively quickly and am living at a very comfortable weight for the past year or so.  The best part of the band is that it is adjustable.  So when I am ready to lose my last 17or so pounds I can get another fill and lose the weight and fit into those size 6 clothes.   Right now I am just comfortable being normal and am focusing on other parts of my life - my kids, my husband, my work, my house. This would not be possible with an RnY because, as I understand it, there is a certain "window of opportunity' after which the pouch stretches and they need to rely on just dieting to maintain their weight loss.  The other thing to consider is that in every other country in the world the lapband is the WLS of choice - it is less invasive and less expensive and just as effective.  American doctors make lots more money on the RnY and they dont have to deal with following up on their patients. If you can find someone who is a pro lapband doctor and really knows how to provide excellent aftercare you will be much better off.   My surgeon saw me after a year and told me I was one of his success stories and attributed my success to the RnY.  I had to remind him that in fact I had a band..

Pinklady, Someone else recently recommended the Vertical Sleeve Gastroplasty to me as well! I would LOVE to be like your daughter and lose 160 pounds! (The sooner the weight is off, the better, in my view!) I am not sure what to do. I've really been putting this off and off and now I need to get serious and just get my surgery. This has taken 2 years this August and I still haven't even gotten surgery! The VSG sounds good, but my doctor doesn't do it. How do I find if another doctor in my area has done it?

Have you checked the Vertical Sleeve board?  Keep doing  your research and I know that some have said the DS but really do the study on the supplements that you have to take.  The VSG is much safer and you can always have the malabsorption part done later if needed, most do not need this.  My daughter has lost 160 lbs in 21 months and started out at 5'7 and 310 lbs.  I wish you luck in what ever WLS you choose.  Priscilla
